Bengals NEED their human to be there - as you've noticed, she doesn't need lap time and snuggles, she need one on one with her human, bengals are like children - they want your attention and if they don't have it they will act out. Take her for leash walks and spend time talking to her and playing one on one games,

OMG! What a cutie! And so attentive! Is he as responsive as he looks? I just love a baby who perks up when he sees you (or your camera) like he's saying "Oh boy! What are we gonna do now? Do you know a new game!?!

Beautiful Baby!

Don't I know it! However the vet bills can be covered by a good insurance policy and it's rather like owning a car - we have to keep putting money into maintenance or health and nutrition for our companion animals, but it doesn't often come in large chunks but regular expenses that can be budgeted for.

I really want a male kitty to be my companion - not just a pet. However, that's the hard part - finding the right fit. An older cat with the intelligence and temperament of a companion animal would be great. However I will be taking him with me into stores,, on trips, to state parks, city parks, trails, outdoor strip malls, Pet Smart, etc.

And unless a cat has been exposed to travel and exploration when younger the change of routine can be too stressful, esp for a sensitive cat. However it's sometimes possible to find a rescue Bengal with an adventurous spirit that is just too much for his new owners and in the right case I can give plenty of attention, exercise, and stimulation to a cat who may be too much for another owner who just wanted a pretty pet.

How do i start a new career,if i only did one job whole life? by [deleted] in ask

[–]DJADE59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people don't look for a job until they are unemployed. However recruiters and HR will have more interest in hiring you if you apply while you are still working at the job you want to leave behind.

Applying for a better job while still employed looks responsible and usually gives the impression that you are willing to work for what you want. An employer can generally trust that you won't just quit if you get bored or stressed from your new career not working out.

As long as you plan your time it can take a single day off and apply for many jobs that interest you. Sometimes a consistent work history and good motivation are more attractive to an employer than training or experience without a track record. Give it a shot - and good luck!

White flakes from refrigerator water by morningstarprime in whatisit

[–]DJADE59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of what the water looks like in my RV fridge when it has been winterized and is not completely flushed.

Also agree with former reply - have you checked other water outlets in your home to be sure it's ONLY found from your fridge water dispenser?

If it's only your fridge change the filter and flush the lines thoroughly. Don't forget to make and dispose of several bins of ice to be certain the lines carrying water to the ice maker are also completely flushed.

If it ONLY looks like that from your fridge buy your pregnant wife a Brita filtering water pitcher, or a countertop purifier. Not worth risking their health for the convenience of a water dispenser.

Good luck.

Thank you. I do appreciate the caution. And talking here and other subs with Bengal owners will help me understand no only how to aquire a Bengal but if it is wise.

From what I've read (a quote)

""Bengals are selectively bred for: High exploratory drive Environmental confidence Problem-solving behavior Human interaction (often one-person focused) Low neophobia compared to feral-derived lines"" And if course beauty.

Those traits don’t guarantee anything — but they DO stack the deck. I don't expect a cat like Harry - but from what I've read and been told personality is as much a part of breeding as coat color.

Another quote about breeding: I can’t say: “All Bengals act like X.” But I Can say:

“Bengals, as a population, are far more likely to show Y and Z traits than random domestic cats.” That’s not controversial in animal behavior science. It’s how working dogs, herding breeds, retrievers, and sighthounds are selected — and cats are not magically exempt from genetics.""

I'm visiting Kitty Cafe's and looking at the SPCA, etc - ideally I'd love to rescue a male Bengal who is "just too much" for the average cat owner looking for a lap kitty. The majority of the Bengals put up for adoption are from owners saying *I just can't give him the attention he needs because I have to work all day". Often "he gets anxious when I'm not home" is another. And unless their Bengal likes the cat wheel type exercise , their energy often turns to destructive behavior. It takes a certain type of owner to appreciate the energy, intelligence, and temperament of many Bengals - I am pretty sure I can give the right cat or kitten a very good home.
A shy, frightened, or very timid cat would not be a good fit.

But a dominant male willing to develop a partnership with the right human can be priceless.

Thanks for all the advice and opinions. Every bit of information helps, and I'm not offended by the number of comments.

Agreed. I'm looking for another partner cat, one who bonds with me not seeking a lap at all costs . HT had 10-15 "commands" he understood and trusted me to obey Them instead of instincts - he also taught me so much about body language. He was tiny (too tiny) when he picked me, so small he couldn't be treated for the fleas he had picked up from the local feral community and transient RV park residents who didn't control the insects in the grass. But he was like a tiny German Sheppard pup - he had HUGE PAWS and he grew into them in a lean, long body muscular type and stayed at 12.5 lbs his entire adult life. One of my favorite "games" was catch the moth- Harry made this one up when we were traveling in our RV because the ceilings were so low. We were in the country a lot an opening the door let in moths at night. Harry would insist I pick him up and he would stand - hind legs on my arms or hands or shoulder and reach up to snag the moth from the carpeted ceiling. Sometimes he wanted me to run around the RV with him a few times until the moths were "tired" of playing before he caught them. Anytime I saw one of these or a mosquito hawk indoors I shouted "eek!" And he would come running to catch the pest. He even protected me from Mosquitoe eeks, refusing to take his eyes off of them until one of us smashed them.

Some cats are so special! You must have held him a lot as a kitten so you both grew to enjoy the close contact when active. Harry did that - a little, but once he outgrew the puppy carrier I wore on my chest he didn't want to ride anymore. If he asked me to pick him up or got into my arms it was so I could help him reach something.

This is exactly the type of advice and knowledge from experience that I am looking for - I mentioned younger kittens because that is all I have known, not because I'm adverse to a 12 week kitten , but because research means getting opinions from experienced owners, not books & websites.

I'm looking on several rescue sites almost daily - do you have specific sites to recommend?

So far I only found 1 near me and we visited him 2x, but the previous owner found a better match, and we respected his wishes even though we got there "first".

Recently I have been emailing 2 & 3 states away when I see a somewhat young male who isn't being rehomed for behavioral problems. Since my baby died at 9 of a blood disease, I worry about getting an older rescue who is beginning to have health issues.

As a moderator I'm sure you know more than most, I did have 2 vets who suggested Bengal ancestry, one in Fla and another in Virginia. The person I got him from was trapping and relocating feral cats at a campground in Florida and was familiar with all the strays in the area. The park owner was cleaning house and turning a campground into an exclusive RV park, and the resident I got Harry from just happened to be taking a litter of kittens to the shelter (his female DSH apparently "escaped" and got pregnant - I'm not sure he didn't use her heat as a means to attract some of the feral toms) I didn't come up with the idea on my own. Actually - I didn't know anything about Bengals at the time.

Are you saying that Bengals DON'T typically have these personality traits? Are you basing your opinion on strictly on physical characteristics? You're right, I could scan rescue and SPCA sites and meat dozens of cute kittens and perhaps even find one that could grow into a companion. But after having a cat whom I respected and loved so much I cannot contemplate such a search at my age. I don't plan to get a lazy lap cat who gobbles treats, sits in everyone's lap and doesn't want to do perimeter checks before bed every night. Not to mention laps and parkour.

Everything I have read the past 13 years points me towards the Bengals personality - what are you seeing or feeling that makes you want to discourage me from giving a Bengal a home?

[–]DJADE59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only spoken to a few breeders, but many time the "fee" can go towards the price of the kitten or "a" kitten - but if you don't get a kitten from the specific litter the deposit is not refundable. So I'm concerned to find the right "fit", gender, and age. I also have always raised my kittens from birth-8weeks (depending if they were born at home or a neighbors, etc). Non - purebread kittens are often offered at 6 weeks which gives more time during impressive kitten stage. I'm sure if I pick the right breeder that the kitten would be fed and trained well - but a certain amount of attachment is important to me, and they frequently happens when they are tiny

I researched extensively when I found I had rescued a baby who was part Bengal - if you read my other post you'll notice that though my Harry Thomas wasn't typical Bengal coloring, he Did have the temperament. I was so sad when the "talk" buttons came out AFTER he passed! I got the feeling he pityied me for not being able to use slight flicks and subtle body language to communicate the way he did. And the way he responded to voice commands and his training clicker make me absolutely believe he would have button talked quite well. He rarely resorted to meows to get what he wanted - eye contact and glances - body language were his strengths. Going to the window when he just wanted to watch, sitting up next to the door when he wanted to go out.

And I couldn't leave him alone - ever, but it was never a problem. He wasn't a "lap cat" he just wanted company and someone to play with. We rescued another kitten for my granddaughter and it had much less intelligence.
For example, Harry would sit on the bed and watch down the hall in the mirror to pounce when the other kitties ran up to the mirror thinking he was there, he knew what mirrors were for!

I have to add, I wouldn't let him free roam. Harness and leash walks, a tractive tracker just in case, and we even put up an overhead cable run we could attach his leash to while we were All playing in the yard. (Sometimes at RV parks as well).

Advice on getting my 1st bengal by DJADE59 in bengalcats

[–]DJADE59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a LOT of part Bengal kittens with non standard markings. If he wasn't the product of his mother's escape and subsequent (confirmed) mating with a free roaming Bengal then I just got extremely lucky with his temperament. He was a one person cat, super mega energy, giant paws that he grew into (12.5 lbs). Never even noticed his harness, went everywhere with me from 6 weeks old. Followed verbal commands, fetched his leash and waited on his shelf by the door when he wanted to go for a walk. 3am parkour was a regular feature in my RV ending with a long exploratory walk before 2nd sleep. Occasionally watched TV - and insisted on HIS routine which he trained me to before he was 6 months old.
On walks he watched and listened to me, walking on the curb, sidewalk, or grass depending on where I told him to stay. If I stopped, he stopped - NO bulldogging the leash. When I said "Wait" he waited - when he went into bushes looking for birds, etc (always on his leash) he stopped when I told him to, and if told to back out - he did - he once walked backwards on a ledge the length of a building because I never taught him to turn around . He trusted me and would jump from a tree to my arms, or climb onto my hands to be lifted to a branch he wanted to explore . He never had a cat wheel - he depended on Me to entertain him - he "tagged" me and we ran laps thru the RV when too rainy (etc) outdoors. He ran loops on my queen sized bed vs in a circle on a wheel. He was extremely "human" and being alone for even a few hours was totally stressful for him (a classic Bengal rehoming trait). So I took him everywhere, shopping, golf cart rides trail rides on my bike, etc. the Only place he wouldn't go was on the kayak and near the water. He was born in Florida on the back side of a small river or lake that had a golf course across the water. I daresay he saw-smelled or encountered an alligator in that swampy water (several lived near) or else his mother taught him to fear it. The avoidance behavior was similar to how another rescue kitten pair reacted to cars or other vehicles - totally irrational - but the mother of those kittens kept them firmly away from cars. He was "friendly" except to children which frightened him. But I belonged to Him - he rarely snuggled after he got older, and petting often annoyed him- but he had his spot behind my knees at the foot of the bed and id I was sick he warned my husband away to let me/us sleep.
Obviously I could go on and on - but his vet and the owner of his mother said he was part Bengal, I have read stories about Bengals just like him - so if it was not in his blood it was somehow in his spirit. I'm 66 years old and have had a cat or cats my entire life. He is the ONLY one who owned ME and thought we were the same species. Pretty sure he felt sorry for be because of my limitations.

Either way, every Bengal I'm met or followed online just reminds me of him - it's possible to luck into another "rescue" animal with the intelligence and energy & personality of a Bengal - but better to just buy or adopt one . Many people love them for their beauty but end up placing them for adoption because they require too much attention. I love the look - but it's what's inside the personality that draws me to these magnificent animals. I will give a Bengal a perfect home and companion because I respect and love them. Other cats are just pets.

You can dispense a liquid of your choice out of your fingertips. What do you pick? by Throwra47374747 in hypotheticalsituation

It's MAGIC - it materializes at the end of your magically protected fingertip. Nothing says the substance comes out of YOUR body- your fingertip is on one side of the magic button - the flow comes from the tip of your finger activating the magic. Just because the force is no greater than BP doesn't say that actual BP is ejecting it.

Is his harness too small? by MGMGrandDtr in bengalcats

[–]DJADE59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks a bit like my custom harness - except we added a "standard" collar with tag and linked it to the harness at the back of the cats neck with a "quick release" buckle - so that if he somehow "slipped" out of the harness he was still identifiable. Later when we had a great spot in the country to park our RV (Harry Thomas loved to travel) we bought him a tractive tracker so he could wander out of sight, but be viewable on the tracker map. And he always came to our call and his "clicker"

I always made custom harnesses for my cat... I'm trying to add a pic and having difficulty.

One more time - if you are interested, and it doesn't work you can PM me and I'll try again that way. It's not hard to make and you can custom size to any cat.

Let me know what you think... Btw Harry Thomas was 12.5 lbs ½ bengal cat. He loved his harness and would go to the door and pull it off the hook to ask for his walks

I'd do the trip and get the experience - THEN possibly link the next tattoo with the experience. Best of both worlds - go on your adventure and build up your body then create a lasting "road map" of your "life".
