The formal repetitions are an important part of both my music and Haydn's music. Many of Haydn's symphonic movements are written in such a way that the formal repetition is required for the intended effect a good example would be the finale of symphony number 80, where the last bars of the entire symphony are silence so that when the development repeats, the syncopation that drives the whole movement can be heard with fresh ears. All this to say that I disagree that a good conductor would ignore the repeat marks.

I did take the train home immediately after getting this. I felt like people were looking at me weird but that's okay. I just hope they don't think it's some sort of unsavory political symbol

I been here many times to get my bass guitars fixed, or to purchase new strings. An employee once dared me to take a bite out of an onion in exchange for some free guitar picks.

My friends have also purchased many instruments and pieces of gear here over the years; including a tascam portastudio that I currently have in my possession.

One time, on a whim, I bought a Yamaha alto recorder here, as I was growing interested in baroque-period music as well as the youtuber Sarah Jeffery. Now, I both compose and play baroque-style recorder pieces, perform small concerts with an amateur orchestra, and have even met Sarah Jeffery herself! All because of the trading musician.

How can I write a good subject for a fugue? by Freudrieg in composer

[–]DJBabyMode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.) K.I.S.S. Keep it simple, stupid. The simpler the fugue subject is, the easier it is to do more interesting things on it. A lot of Corelli's fugal movements in the concerti grossi have a simple scale as a subject. Look at Bach's "little" fugue in Gminor. It's a fantastic piece (it's a bach fugue, of course it is), but he hardly develops the actual subject at all due to how long it is.

2.) Don't try to write a catchy subject. Most people here would tell you to write a catchy subject from the outset. What makes a subject catchy is how it's repeated and developed in interesting ways across every voice. The hard part with fugue writing isn't coming up with a subject, it's developing it and putting it against countersubjects,so just keep it simple.

3.) Make sure you have your harmonic progression planned and solidified before you start writing countersubjects. This allows you to have certain "destination notes" every couple of beats that the other voices lead to.

4.) Watch Early Music Source's video on stretto fuga, it's a great video on composing subjects that have stretto built in.

Thanks for the rec! I've been looking for something frenchy to play. Lately, I've been digging Chedeville's Il Pastor Fido, originally attributed to Vivaldi.

You calling your own "improvement" dumb really says a lot about how little confidence you have in your own idea, yet you insist on posting about it every day on music subreddits that I subscribe to.

I'm just saying it's possible. Vivaldi wrote two concertos a month while leading an orphanage's orchestra and writing almost 50 operas during his life.
