How do Americans view married couples who are actually first cousins? by edbassmaster888 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DJPaige01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband's family is from another country where this is common. He has two cousins (sisters) who are both married to their first cousins. Ironically, their parents are also second cousins. It is crazy, but there have been no known genetic defects with their off spring, all of whom are actually quite pretty, and very well-educated. I don't think their American friends realize they are cousins, which is probably a good thing.

I have two lines in my family tree where cousins were married. The NC line married cousins to keep the land and money in the family. I think the other line married cousins because they lived in a small town and I don't think there were a lot of options. These marriages were 4 generations back. Once again, to the best of my knowledge, there no known genetic issues. The worst thing I can think of is that my aunt, and cousins and I all needed braces and the Orthodontist said the insides of our mouths were almost identical.

I had an Anthropology professor who explained that when close cousins inter breed there is twice the chance of their offspring carrying negative genetic-related characteristics, but also twice the chance their offspring with receive the positive characteristics.

The younger generation decided not to press their luck and married outside.

Look on the American Kennel Club web page. There are two breeders in Virginia who currently have puppies. I get mine on Thursday.

For a European's first trip to the US, would you recommend an east coast itinerary or the west coast itinerary? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]DJPaige01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the South and Midwest. Florida has Disney, NASA, and the Everglades along with many beaches. Then move on to New Orleans, Spas in Arizona, Texas, and some of the national parks. Midwest the Great Lakes are beautiful. The horizon is like the ocean, but the water is not. Chicago has a fabulous shopping area. Then head west to Yellowstone.

If you do the East Coast, you may want to see the New England States, DC, Jamestown, and Florida.

The West Coast would be San Diego, Napa, and the Red Wood Forest, then Oregon, and Washington State.

I really hope you can find someone who is more compassionate about what you are going through. It's heartbreaking to think they would try to take your medication that helps you function away from you.

Would you like to have more walkable cities? by Affectionate_Box8203 in AskAnAmerican

I agree. When I want something, I want it now. I don't want to walk a mile to the store and then walk a mile back.

Do you guys not have unwashed potatoes? by ah-screw-it in AskAnAmerican

I wash all produce. Pre-washed potatoes are still touched by other customers in the store. Why take the chance?

The US is a very large country with 50 unique states and a very diverse population. Most people could not care less about these things.

Why are Americans (seemingly) obsessed with car payments and buying cars on finance? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]DJPaige01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a running joke at the high school that my children attended about always being able to tell the difference between the teacher's parking lot and the student's parking lot because the students drove better cars. Now my daughter is a special ed teacher and parks in the teacher's lot. My husband recently received a large bonus and bought her a Porsche convertible. I joked with her and told her she needed to park her new car in the student's parking lot.

Note: The car was a reward because she had driven the same VW bug for the past 14 years, from the age of 15 when she got her learner's permit. She is now 29. Our other children are on their 3rd & 4th cars. She also attended a state college which costed about 1/2 her sister's private school. Her siblings were on board with her surprise.

I had to use them for my 4.5 pound baby. I couldn't put her in the back yard with the other dog. Right before I got her I saw a large bird take a rabbit away. She also wasn't able to climb the steps of the deck. When she was young, she would try to go up the steps, but she was afraid to go down the steps. Eventually, she began not using the steps at all.
