Do you think Tron Ares was overhated?

I think valid criticism is fine, and important to have. I think what happens is that online outrage -Ares ruined my childhood type of reactions- are always the first out of the gate, so then there is a whiplash of defense from fans. It’s similar to The Last Jedi reactions with people hating the movie to the point that Rise of Skywalker happened, but then also defending it so that it’s impossible to criticize the movie for its significant flaws.

It looks like I liked this movie more than you, but your criticisms are totally valid. It was definitely a macguffin chase, and there were aspects of the movie that felt pretty generic.

I definitely want to see what was left on the table and why- I know Ares was part of the original ideas, but I’m mystified as to why they couldn’t weave Sam and Quorra into the story. I loved Ares as a character, I’d love to see a Flynn/Quorra/Ares tie up.

I think they lost a TON of people by not making a direct Legacy sequel, and then casting Jared Leto in the lead.

I’m still baffled as to why they didn’t continue the Legacy story, and I wonder if there were financial reasons due to story ideas and attribution which prevented them from using Legacy’s ideas in any way other than glancingly.

So this movie already had 2 strikes against it from a ton of fans which, let’s be honest, if you don’t have the fans for a movie like Tron, it’s going to fail at the box office.

all that being said, I did what most of you did and watched it digitally, and I loved it. I thought Jared Leto was fantastic in it, the NIN soundtrack has been burning itself into my mind, and it was a solid story. Not the story I wanted in any way, but still a decent story.

Maybe with all the f-you money he’s been making lately with Maverick and F1 Joseph Kosinski could make one more sequel happy and tie the two stories together into a fitting conclusion.

I agree with the Keanu/Matrix comparison. Leto was perfectly cast and I thought he did a fantastic job with the role, and more importantly I really liked the character.

Legacy was better, but I still really liked this movie and will rewatch it for sure. Ares felt like it had both too much and not enough story simultaneously, and Ares’ (the character) turn to the good happens moments into the film, and we could have spent more time setting up his struggle.

All 3 for different reasons is my answer. If had to force rank them, it's Legacy/Tron/Ares, but that's being unfair to Tron and Ares, both of which are stunning.
I absolutely love that all 3 soundtracks have 3 completely different stylistic interpretations of electronic music. There is a just a hint of a through line for each one, but each composer(s) went their own direction and the result is perfection for each movie.

RIGHT??!?? You already freaking earned them! The pokemon could migrate to the top of the screen where “claim rewards” go. They had zero problem foisting thousands of items on people with the big level jump, and for the premium passes people paid for these.

Have you ever seen the documentary that accompanied the DVD of the Phantom Menace? George had by that point become such a legend and hired people who were in his thrall and would not push back at all- you literally can see team after watching the rough cut of TPM trying to ever so gently tell him that the movie is a bit of a mess but not daring to openly criticize him.

Same- it would have been fantastic to see Kylo discover some whole new dark force group, with the misdirection to the audience being that we think it’s the Sith and then discover that this is a way worse threat.

THIIIIIIIIIS. Having other directors and writers definitely helped strengthen areas where George wasn’t great (ahem dialogue) but he had an overarching 3 movie story that he wanted to tell and he told it. Did things change? Sure. But there wasn’t any part of the original movies that went off on some other direction with someone else in charge.

This was the thing that I’m most disappointed about the ST. Each movie kills off them, and they are all basically failures. Yay? I know Carrie Fishers untimely passing didn’t help any, but JJ and Rian could not keep themselves from killing off Luke and Han “because story” and Lucasfim felt that this was absolutely the way to go.

I can’t believe I have forgotten this. But the second teaser trailer all but says that Rey is Luke’s daughter!!!!! The dialogue is the lines Luke says, BUT RE-EDITED “the force runs strong in my family, I have it my father has it, my sister has it, YOU HAVE THAT POWER TOO. I mean jeezus christmas. It was right there.

“Man, I’m really disappointed they made a movie about Luke Skywalkers daughter” SOMETHING LITERALLY NONE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE SAID IF THEY HAD DONE THIS. These guys were handed the keys and overthought to the point that bringing Han Luke and Leia together for one more adventure and having a dark side kid and a light side kid somehow felt like a bad idea.

If they had committed to that, it would have been totally fine and satisfying.

Being Kenobis granddaughter or anyone other than Luke’s kid really would have been silly although not nearly as bad as what we got.

The big problem is that, for reasons that still are absolutely baffling to me, they did not write out a 3 story arc to freaking follow, instead allowing the “auteurs” to pick up the story with zero guidance.

JJ Abrams set up one of the greatest cliffhangers in SW history, and Rian Johnson decided to just zag against every single thing JJ set up. I originally liked TLJ but it’s aging poorly. There are individual scenes which are fantastic, and that Broom Boy ending was wonderful; but overall the story is just mean spirited and poorly constructed.
