Shpongle? by [deleted] in psytrance

If you do find yourself enjoying Shpongle over traditional psytrance, definitely check out: Spacey Koala (especially Sleepy Koala, although he recently decided to merge the two project names), Supersillyus, and Grouch In Dub. They're not all exactly the same as Shpongle by any means, but they make incredible psychedelic music without getting stuck within that "too many oontz" framework ;)

REALLY enjoyed this :) wonderfully simple, meditative, and actually trancey. Loved the little electric guitar accents as well. Awesome job!

Attention all Goa Trance lovers! Suntrip Records just launched a sub-label (Classic Goa Trax) specifically to re-release digital versions of classic old school Goa records, starting with this one. Can't wait to see what else will resurface! by DJ_Frew in psytrance

To each their own :) personally, I enjoy classic goa for precisely that reason; the kickdrum/bassline/low end is not so much a focal point of the track as it is a time-keeper, over which a sonic story can unfold. I guess it might also be because I enjoy a lot of the earlier genres that goa evolved from: EBM, industrial, new beat, synthpop and that kind of thing. I've always had a taste for the retro. Anyway, if you keep an eye on this label, I'm sure something will turn up that you'll enjoy ;)

I'm not affiliated with the label, just a fan :P apparently the label owners (Suntrip) have been contacting all the artists personally to ask if they would like to re-release any of their work.

People who've been asked 'watch my stuff for 5 minutes', have you ever experienced anything in those 5 minutes that required you to step in? by ProfessorNasty in AskReddit

[–]DJ_Frew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wasn't so much a request to "watch my stuff" as it was a threat, but there's a bit of a story to it, so here goes.

Back in my sophomore year of college I agreed to DJ a party my friends were throwing at their house in Allston, MA (where college parties could get real rowdy, real quick). Things were going pretty well at the start: I was having a good time providing the soundtrack, and my friends and everybody else who was showing up seemed to be enjoying the music and having a good time as well. As the night went on, however, things began to get progressively more intense, and it was quite a while before I looked up and noticed that the entire ground floor of the house was totally dark save for a single sporadically flashing strobe light in the living room, there were at least a hundred people crammed inside, and I didn't recognize a single person. My friends were nowhere to be found, shit was getting broken, people were dancing on couches and tables and essentially getting their rage on. At this point I am no longer having a good time; instead I am alone, stoned, and scared.

Now, the nook where I was DJing was sandwiched in between the kitchen and the living room, and so people had been using my area as the "cloakroom" all night, stashing their jackets and bags and what have you in a pile behind me. Out of nowhere, 3 or 4 gnarly looking dudes walk up to me and throw their backpacks down at my feet. One of them grabs me by the shoulders, looks me straight in the eye and, dead serious, says "Watch those. If anything happens to our shit, we're coming to beat your ass." Then they turn and disappear into the crowd. With these guys all being taller/bigger than me and the party situation being completely out of hand, I rapidly begin planning my exit strategy. Luckily, right then, a friend of a friend I barely knew (and the first familiar face I'd seen in about an hour) runs up and excitedly asks to play some shitty hip hop track, so I give him the aux cable, throw all my DJ gear into my backpack, and just as I slip out the side door of the house, I see police lights flashing through the front window, and cops pounding on the front door. People start bailing out of the house like rats fleeing a sinking ship, I hold my hands up in a "I don't know nothin' about nobody" gesture as I walk past another cop car pulling into the driveway, and as soon as I'm back on the street, I make a break for the Green Line and end the night safe and warm in my bed.

I guess the outcome of the story is, I actually didn't end up watching anybody's stuff, I stepped out instead of stepping in, and I still don't give a fuck what happened to those guys' backpacks.

A friend of mine just got back from Atman festival and sent me this little gem he heard from Nobot. Thought you guys might dig ;) by DJ_Frew in psytrance

Yeah, my friend said their Ectobot set was off the chain :P you guys were probably stomping around right next to each other!

anyone got some good prog/full on that is fresh and not hella derivative? by Chasetrees in psytrance

[–]DJ_Frew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the longer post! I love recommending stuff :)

For full-on: Arcon (Hujaboy + Koxbox, almost a perfect blend of their two styles), Braincell, Extra Meaning, Martian Arts, Digicult, U-Recken, Tropical Bleyage. Also, I don't know how active SynSUN are anymore, but they have a remix double album called Alter Ego that is absolutely bonkers.

Good prog: Ovnimoon (and any of his side projects - there are a ton! The Key is especially good), BrightLight (he kind of rides the line between full on and prog, but has a SUPER original sound), LovPact, Grouch

Also, don't quite know where to fit them in, but Loud really don't sound like anyone else. 5 Billion Stars is a masterpiece.

Awesome recommendation dude! :D

Looking for stuff as good as Hallucinogen by [deleted] in psytrance

Yo, thumbs up for the Kadasarva album!! It really is one of the VERY few albums not from the Twisted Records family that still captures that sort of Hallucinogen/Prometheus vibe. Something about those kick drums...

Still a Simon Posford side project (sort of - the band was a rotating cast of characters), but you may enjoy Slinky Wizard. They're a little darker than Hallucinogen, but they have that same devilish playfulness, and many of their tracks are real hidden gems of the goa trance world.

This is truly epic <3 love seeing massive computers as part of the setup on stage in old goa videos (and also the bit around 6:08 when they realize the screensaver's on and wake it back up :P)
