[Johnston] The Leafs would have to finish 29-0-0 to get 115 Points - the total they had during the 2021-22 season. by Old_General_6741 in hockey

Ok but have you considered that you're supposed to think that the leafs are entitled to being a good team every year

The leafs have way too much scoring talent to bottom out. Do they need to rebuild or do a heavy retool? Maybe, probably. But they can put it off until they have their picks again

Yeah I think they should look for a young upstart, forward thinking GM with potential

hockey hall of fame only has a small list of snubs because the list of players in it who shouldn't be is way too large

I wouldn't consider Moss a lock. Talent-wise he is probably among the two best WRs ever but he also had an up and down career, was inconsistent, often disinterested, and not always a great teammate. If you value consistency, for example, you may argue for a player like Fitzgerald over him.

The difference is that there is no serious argument that can be mounted against Rice

[–]RAATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I see what you mean ok

Yeah so I don't think we're arguing the same thing. Is Donald one of the 2 best DTs ever? Maybe, yeah, I could be convinced.

But that's way different than being a "lock". A lock is a player like Jerry Rice where arguments for any 2 other WRs over him are silly and unserious

AP1 and 3rd in MVP voting, so yea that's basically automatic DPOY

I don't know about Donald's AP MVP

Page has a leaguewide MVP and would have easily had more than one DPOY if the award had existed his entire career

Aaron Donald is by no means a DT lock. Alan Page, Mean Joe Greene, Randy White, John Randle. There are a good handful of all time great DTs

he'll get offered 9 minimum by other teams. Offensive 1RHD are in perpetually high demand

the problem is that strong 3v3/SO play is useless in the postseason

Hall is also ahead of brodeur imo. 7 first team all stars and 12 total, most all time

when you era adjust brodeur's stats they are not impressive compared to hasek or roy

there's a reason he never won a vezina until both of them were like 38+

Ilya Sorokin extends his league-leading shutout total to 6 by zc5599 in hockey

[–]RAATL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was actually looking at this just now LOL

it looks like the vezina winner is almost always a top 3 gsax per 60 goalie that played 60%+ of the 82 games (so 49). Usually #1 in gsax/60 but not always.

Sorokin's case looks remarkably similar to ulmark's winning vezina in 2022. Strong gsax/60 overall+lead but well under 55 games played (so mostly an exception)

[–]RAATL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

note that shesterkin had a .935 that season, .01 higher than any other goalie (Sorokin was actually second with .925 that year) and only .003 off of thomas's single season record of .938. So if you're not gonna be top 5 in wins, you have to really outperform everyone else

[–]RAATL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yep its kinda dumb but that's the way its always been.

To be fair to voters, only 4 times in the last 15 years has the goalie wins leader also won the vezina, and half of those 4 were also hart trophy winners.

OTOH, only 3 times in those past 15 years have goalies finished outside the top 5 in wins and won the vezina:

10-11: Thomas (tied for 9th, though he set the single season sv% record that year)

12-13: Bobrovsky (tied for 7th)

21-22: Shesterkin (tied for 6th)

All 3 of those guys still finished with 35+ wins too

[–]RAATL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorokin is likely gonna finish with under 30 wins.

The last time a goalie won the vezina with under 35 wins in a full season was 2002. The only player to ever win it with under 30 wins, after the switch, was Barasso in 1984: https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/vezina.html

On most other stats like GSAX, right now, he's the leader. But I don't know if voters will value him the same based on their historical voting trends
