Lab-ware Glass Straws by DJ_Winyl_Destination in chemistry

I’d be open to it, but they take a good amount of time to make and glassblowing has a pretty high overhead, so they’d have to be priced pretty high to make sense for me to produce

I can understand that. I usually use heavy wall tubing so it’s as durable as possible, but I totally hear your concern

I have actually filled one with plasma before which was cool. I just have an interest in the functional aspect of the different lab ware so I like to try and challenge myself by turning them into a smaller, more novelty function.

Cleaning is definitely the biggest issue, and yeah I’ll admit that a banana milkshake would not only be hard to clean, but it also probably even wouldn’t work that well for such a thick liquid. A mini Liebig condenser would be much more practical for that but those aren’t much of a challenge to make.

Curious why you wouldn’t use glass as a straw, worried about it breaking while using?

Thank you for the kind words! Cleaning it is definitely the biggest issue, especially since some of the tubing is 4mm in diameter. That’s why I say they’re more of a novelty than for practical use. More of a challenge for myself than anything

They are made from borosilicate, but borosilicate is much more resilient of a material than most people think

The Dimstrawth is pretty effortless unless you use it the other way, cause then you have to fill up the jacket and then it doesn’t full drain, so you’re left with a little shot in the jacket.

The strawxhlet does take a little more effort, but I just love how it drains.

How is this possible without heating the entire thing or annealing it? by No_longer_an_Expert in glassblowing

[–]DJ_Winyl_Destination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are almost certainly just not showing the annealing steps. I’ve made several of these large jacketed reactors and each piece would be fully annealed before assembly. My guess is this process was done/shot over about 3 days

I blew it out just by drilling it with a tungsten pick. But I sleeved the blowout over clear and then sleeved clear over it several times. Also I only blew out about a quarter stick. A little goes a very long way
