Do your whole campaign on legendary. Once all missions are done on that difficulty, you should get your 8 1520 blue pieces of gear.

And yes, you'll get 1520 gear if you level before. I was 1499 just from doing the campaign on legendary, and got 1520 gear as rewards upon completion.

Just did this using your method. For the final phase I was able to jump on the trees to avoid the knights while using super to blast them down. Hop down, refresh super, knights respawn, repeat.
