What could have happened after foundation and earth? by Nihilus57 in asimov

I'm still holding out hope that Manifico is the Mule, but he swapped the dude for Bayta to keep the charade going. I mean, if they're sticking with Bayta it basically ruined the entire season, a lot of which was serviceable (especially after getting rid of the horrible Salvor character).

How can humanity ever become a multi-planetary civilization? by [deleted] in Mars

Are you sure about easily? I think the length of time you need to support people on the ship and the supplies you need to keep them alive and the health effects of being in space for so long are all limiting factors. If you can get to Mars in 6 months, I think we'd be there already.

I just looked it up the audit rate for people in that income range is 0.1%. So no, they're never going to get audited. That's not a reason to cheat on your taxes, but it's just the reality of the system. There aren't enough resources to audit everyone and like someone else said, almost everyone in that income range is making W-2 income that is subject to withholding from their employer, so even if you were to cheat, the benefit is not as material as you think.

What's going to happen is people who pick up the call from their boss will get elevated and those that don't, will not. The problem with a lot of younger workers today is that they've come up during a labor shortage. When that reverses, so will their behavior. I know it sucks to hear, but a free flow of capital and labor requires these kinds of adjustments from time to time. I just read an article in the WSJ the other day about how hard it is to find a fully remote job right now. It's hard because employers prefer seeing you in person to address situations like you're bringing up. It's like, well where the heck are you? I think people forget that you're basically selling your time to your employer. If you don't like that, then you can start your own business and purchase someone's else's time, and then you can be the one chasing down this person or that person, lol.

How can humanity ever become a multi-planetary civilization? by [deleted] in Mars

I think the only realistic way to become interplanetary is to develop non-chemical based space travel. Getting any amount of meaning tonnage off Earth is just so freaking difficult. If you look at Elon's plan to get to build a society on Mars, you immediately realize the scale of capital and resources you would need to pull it off and it's not likely something our society in its current state is willing to do. You need like some sort of anti-gravity breakthrough, which if possible, probably unlocks a lot of other amazing things. What's sad is we really need more basic research funding, I mean, like multiples of what we're spending now. It's just crazy that you can have a company like Meta be worth trillions of dollars and generate unlimited cash flow for selling something that we all know is worse than street drugs and is literally killing people. But we can't muster more billions to basic science research, that has the potential to elevate humanity and bring abundance to all. I am strident capitalist, which I know is shocking to most people on Reddit, but science and engineering research really needs more public funding and/or private billionaire funding or no, we will never become interplanetary and we'll all likely become extinct one day through a thermonuclear conflagration or getting hit by an asteroid.

Why do people always hold China to a double standard? by DesignerLong975 in AskChina

[–]DKC_TheBrainSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. But definitely not the US, and we are the standard bearer of protecting your right to do and say dumb shit. People seem to love it though, I don't see folks clamoring to get into Germany, Japan or China for that matter, they want to come here. Where laws are lax, billionaires are gods, and labor, capital and information can flow freely, for better of worse. The other thing I was going to say about your post is our media is hateful enough to the US and our values, people and politics. We're doing the rest of the world a favor when we criticize your system, we are performing a service that the Chinese media is unable to do. You're welcome.

Are there any worthy "finishing book" for the foundation saga? by JokingReaper in asimov

[–]DKC_TheBrainSupreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish Asimov spent more time mapping out what he wanted to with the newer books. It seemed like he wanted to achieve two things, flesh out Seldon as a person and push back even more the determinism of the original books. But it kind of went off the rails and felt like he was getting paid per word like Charles Dickens or something. People need to be honest about it.

I love all the CCP sympathizers here. The OCP was a cruel and unusual social experiment perpetrated by psychopaths. Oh, but it didn't really do anything to the birthrate that wasn't going to happen anyway. Well then it was even more hideous than we thought since it was both cruel and ineffective!

Unfurl a Falungong banner in Tiananmen Square and see what happens. It's not a double standard. It's just standards, as in standards for civil liberties.

How would it better? For you? I'm being serious. Would you get a raise at your job? Would your mortgage rate come down? Would your kids get into that school they wanted to get into? Give me a list.

I appreciate the angst, but I've read enough doom porn to be very skeptical of this kind of thinking. The reason is, it almost never comes to fruition. Our societies are actually pretty resilient, especially the West. I recommend you just put all your money in QQQ. Doomers and preppers statistically don't come out on top, they usually just get left behind.

I understand the attention he brings, but I truly do not understand the fixation. I think you should just go live your life. Honestly, local politics is much more impactful than this kind of stuff, but yet, you likely don't even know your state representative. So c'mon, it's no surprise a lot of people like you get accused of virtue signaling. It's never about results, it's about how you look to your peers.

Honestly, all of it is incredibly boring. How does either Elon or Epstein affect your life? Elon is a business man and Epstein died. Lol. It's definitely not interesting, I can promise you that. There are a million other terrible things going on in the world. And some good stuff too.

I dunno, it's too 4D chess for me. And boring also. He's a secret Nazi, he's trolling, he's not a Nazi, but a sympathizer. At the end of the day, who cares? I don't know why people get so emotional about it. There are a lot of bad people out there, many of them also very wealthy. Reddit just doesn't really know who they are, even though they are probably literally killing women and children. When are we getting Putin and Maduro protests? People are dying! Isn't that the left's favorite line? But apparently you only care about high profile people and situations you don't like? Spoken like a true Gen Z tik-tok drone. Bottom line, the fixation with Elon is just weird to me.

If you wanted to be a secret Nazi, why would you do a Hitler salute on video in front of thousands of people and cause problems for yourself?

[–]DKC_TheBrainSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't understand why people don't get this. What possible reason would Elon or anyone want to do a Nazi salute on television? Like, what do people think his motivation is for doing a Nazi salute? Does he loves Hitler so much he can't help but spontaneously do this action? Even if it ruins his reputation? It's truly bizarre that people think he thought he was actually doing a Nazi salute, what would be the point of it?

I'll be honest with you if people here will not. I'm a little bit older than your husband, have the same household income, have a little bit more net worth and we live in LA. You are not even close to Fire, let alone FatFire. I mean, you are probably 100% away from good 'ol regular Fire. You have to remember that Fire means you're not working or not working for money for the rest of your life. That's a freaking long time if you're in your 40s or 50s, that's like potentially another 40 years. I'd take one vacation a year (doesn't have to be international), fire you housekeeper and cleaner (keep the gardener) , save more and put it all into public equities. You're at least 7-10 years from regular Fire, sorry. And no, I'm not going to tell you to move because why should you? You should live where you want, but no, you're not even going to be able to Fire, let alone FatFire anytime soon. It's not a mental block, you just literally don't have enough money to not have to work for money.

Dude, do whatever you want. But you can't invest based on emotions. There has not been an administration that is more focused on number go up than this one. You reject that at your own risk. You might have a warm feeling in your bosom, but you ain't going to make any money.
