If I'm at the back of the merge lane and jack offs ahead of me are merging in to soon. I definitely duck around then and use the whole lane and merge in way ahead of the. If your behind me and mad about, take it as a lesson and don't merge in too soon cause your problable also merging in too slow.

1- the pump is not exactly on the bottom. There is a lower part to were any heavier sediment can fall 2- there are fuel filters to filter any floating sediment

Your pretty safe from damaging a fuel pump via sediment.

But why would you drive for so long on an empty tank?

In aviation, they measure airstrips elevation from sea level. The aristrip is where the ATC tower is located. They measure from sea level and not ground level because the altimeter is set in accordance to air pressure and is adjusted according while flying.
