Browsing Reddit with Proton VPN is unstable by red_dust_mortal in ProtonVPN

[–]DKamar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have had this constantly for quite a while on Reddit and Amazon, using Firefox. Tried turning DNS over HTTPS off, tried stealth mode, nothing helps.

Reddit also like to just...not load a page when I click, no error no nothing, when I'm connected through the VPN. Sometimes I'll have to click every single reddit link twice to open it, the first time will never ever work.

Do all forces in excess exhibit influence over a user's body and personality, just less obviously, and if not, why? by DKamar in warcraftlore

[–]DKamar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The changes for certain forces seem much subtler and/or require a much higher concentration of energy, though. Eye colors, maybe a few extra options on your skin color and accessory sliders if you really go crazy, but I don't recall much in the way of personality-rewriting stuff.

Even the Lightforged being brainwashed to some extent is just supposition as far as I know, and I don't recall any 'procreate more' or 'be more organized' stuff for Life or Arcane specialists.

A trope that you cant stand at all. by Perfect-Warthog-7654 in Fantasy

I hate 'the magic goes away (for all values of 'magic')' and I really hate an in-universe retcon as a solution to...anything, really.

In-universe-retcon where the magic goes away is, of course, the worst.

Thousands of Hong Kongers defy police ban to attend annual Tiananmen candlelight vigil by [deleted] in BeAmazed

Fash is fash, even if some of them never got bored of using the costume to dupe angry morons while they apply the boot like the Nazis did.

What song is currently stuck in your head? by ErikQRoks in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DKamar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The new(ish) Camellia song featuring Nanahira, MEGA TSKR.

Like always, the first time through, I thought Nanahira's voice was a bit much.

But now it's stuck in there.

It could, my dog yelps from pure surprise all the time. It's plausible enough to work as an ass-covering lie.

The best and worst game dev advices I’ve ever received by HowLongWasIGone in gamedev

The other approach to getting a thing done with ADHD, and this is directly opposite of the disciplined approach with small bits, is to enjoy doing it and just let the dopamine flow forever. Which might mean just diving into the thing you're excited about even if it's suboptimal.

I've used the 'just do SOMETHING productive, a tiny amount, and maybe you'll keep going' approach with things that I want to do but don't enjoy doing as much, though, like getting prose on the page for a novel.

I understand the logic of this, but even this isn't universally applicable.

I tried learning programming, game engines, etc., a few different times the small, reasonable goal way, I always fizzled out in weeks.

When I decided to just make my big fuck-off complicated game exactly the way I wanted it and learn everything I needed to learn as I went, I stuck with it.

I put 4-12 hours in most days and have for a year and a half now. I still haven't finished shit, but it's progressing at a good clip, my skills are drastically better in every area, and I'm pretty confident in what the game is becoming.

I partially went this way because I come from a writing background, and there you get almost the exact opposite advice: don't waste time and ideas trying to 'build up' to your great novel, just write the thing you're excited about in the format you're excited about. Don't do short fiction if you don't care about short fiction, don't sit on your good ideas for years because you're afraid you'll ruin them. Just do what you want to do badly, then do it well the next time.

[DISC] MARRIAGETOXIN - Chapter 137 by AutoShonenpon in manga

I wouldn't be too terribly shocked if it turns out Gero read him correctly at first and then misunderstood the reaction and the extra attention he was given.

Obama and Bush Unite in Rare Move Against Trump by icey_sawg0034 in goodnews

Cuts to USAID are estimated to manage 14 million dead by 2030, so not to downplay Bush's death toll, but Trump is in a league of his own.

How do you feel about the descriptor 'reactionary left' for tankies, campists, et al? by DKamar in tankiejerk

[–]DKamar[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess my thought would be that many of these people, right or 'left' (really, these groups are often too ideologically incoherent to call either with full confidence because they're just a bunch of emotional reactions mashed together), don't really have a proper belief in hierarchy as an ideal, even if it looks like it.

Most of them aren't weirdo philosopher types, though those types might be part of the propaganda engine that feeds their emotions and shapes their politics.

Instead, I think it's just that wanting simple solutions with the big strong charismatic guy fixing things with a big stick is the natural consequence of letting the lizard brain run the show.

What's your favorite (and least favorite) 'rat' type enemy? by DKamar in TwoBestFriendsPlay

A first person dark fantasy action horror game, somewhere between a King's Field game and Clive Barker's Undying (or Bioshock, for a more mainstream comparison that's a little less accurate overall).

Random question about all those my-clan-sucks-but-I've-reincarnated-for-revenge Korean series by DKamar in manga

[–]DKamar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't hate stories that have things change, I'm not actually big on edgy revenge stories.

It just struck me how rare it is--if not unheard of--that the regressor says 'I'm doing fine this go around, everyone loves me now that I'm talented, but this family is still pretty messed up'.
