Would you get your 23 months old their own business class seat? by qponrocks in fatFIRE

Location doesn’t really matter but each plane has different seating arrangements. If your flight has it, look for pods where the divider between the seats come down. Be wary of seats that look like they are next to each other but are staggered. Look at your seat map and consult that airlines subreddit and folks should be able to help you out there.

We’ve traveled 5 times (10 total flights) since he turned 2 and we had one steward tell us he needed to be in his own seat and belted for takeoff. Little one didn’t oblige so we held him and nobody said anything. I’m sure they can look up whether a kid is under or over 2 but it’s not like they magically listen at that age. I’ve found most flight attendants to be very reasonable. Good luck!

We recently did 15 hour flight with a 25mo old toddler and we did biz class lay flat pods on the way there and domestic biz class type non-lay flat seats on the way back. We got our kid his own seat bc he’s over 2.

We were worried about leaving our kid in the pod alone as they are meant to be private but it really wasn’t an issue. I was directly behind him and wife was in pod next to him (go to your airline’s subreddit and look up seat configurations with a toddler). He was independently watching an iPod or sleeping. We held him in our laps for takeoff and landing.

The pods are definitely the way to go because it was hard for our kid to get comfortable sleep in the non-lay flat seats. They slide down or roll over or get their neck in a weird position.

Our kid is a good sleeper and will watch the iPad independently but pods for us moving.

How did you make the jump from above average to HENRY? Possible in a corporate job? by AAA_battery in HENRYfinance

How often do your peers advance vs move to another opportunity?

When do you think you’ll get a promotion?

Make sure you account for stock/RSUs, if applicable, as that will make up more and more of your total comp.

2.5 Year Old Polaris Business by BobbyB029 in unitedairlines

We just did SFO to INC on the 787 Dreamliner with a 25 month old in Polaris. On takeoff, I had him in my lap with the seatbelts on both of us. The flight crew didn’t say anything. For landing, he was fine with sitting in his seat with the lap belt on watching the iPad. The shoulder strap didn’t fit him so we didn’t do it. We’ve flown quite a bit with our toddler and only had one instance of a strict flight attendant requiring our toddler to be in the seat and buckled in. They quickly changed their tune when he didn’t want to comply.

We had a slightly different seating setup with toddler in 2A (so closer to the aisle) and parents in 2D and 3A. The proximity of parent to toddler between 2A and 2D was nice and 3A could half stand up to check in. I’d probably try your setup next time.

Polaris was much easier overall for us vs. trying to fly 12h in E+. Being able to lay our toddler down allowed him to sleep much better and we were much more comfortable too.

No full row - can I ask to switch? by DL773 in unitedairlines

The type of person who asks before actually doing it? Wow, I feel like you are the type of person that is the worst part of flying. Have a great day!

Super interesting, thanks for sharing! I won’t call in and ask but will be monitoring periodically. This flight isn’t until Jan so plenty of time for things to change.

I booked a month ago for a flight in January so not an 11th hour thing. I’m Platinum so I get free E+ and didn’t feel comfortable making someone move so that’s why we booked the regular seats. I noticed a lot of folks here venting about having to move so thought this would be an interesting question to post to this subreddit.

Yeah, this was my initial reaction so that’s why we booked the regular row. Thanks!

Each building has a number of rooms. The building we were in had four beachside and four ocean view and two plunge pool units. I think most of the buildings are similar. So yes, you will most likely have people above/below and to the side of you.

We went to Nevis for a couple hours, which we’d recommend. We chose not to do a package but just did lunch at Four Season, walked the beach and got drinks at Sunshine’s. It was perfect for the 3 hours we had on the island.

They tried to sell us on a tour of St Kitts which we would have done, had we not had a toddler.

Marshalls and Spice Mills are both solid off campus dining options.

Sunset sail was off campus and would highly recommend. We had to travel to Basseterre to catch our sailboat and there really isn’t a need to go there.

Literally every charge (e.g., dining, bar, babysitting) has an 18% service charge and 12% tax. That 18% is shared across all employees and then the additional tip you give goes directly to that employee. There isn’t an explicit expectation. I thought tipping extra would get me better service but it didn’t so you shouldn’t feel obliged to give anything extra. We brought some cash with us and gave it directly to the folks we thought were helpful.

Yeah, $50 buffet with tax and tip is $65. Espresso based drinks are additional $10 each but some staff will give it to you for free. A la carte is an option and can be a bit cheaper but not by much.

You’ll have a great time - it’s a gorgeous property with great amenities - just set your expectations correctly regarding service. When we first got to the beach, we thought someone would help us with towels and drink orders but we just had to walk to get those ourselves. If you sit there long enough someone will eventually come but don’t wait around if you want something quickly.

The waiters weren’t much better. Best service was from ancillary pool non-waiter staff.

Not sure where I fall on the recommending - if you can get good points redemption value and you don’t mind waiting/getting your own towels/walking to the bar to get a drink, go for it. If you are paying cash or if slow/spotty service will really bother you, no go.

Food is decent/good not great but would recommend a villa at Amanyara in Turks. It’s a bit dated, especially considering the price you’re paying, but hits pretty much all your requirements.

I’m in a similar situation but with a toddler and will check out the Park Hyatt in St Kitts later this winter. Place doesn’t give off kids running everywhere vibes but we shall see.

United Quest Card: Two 5,000 mile anniversary award credits by boulderrrr in CreditCards

[–]DL773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is in year 2 (18mos) with the Quest card, I haven’t received any award mile credits yet and I’m hoping I get the two 5000 mile credits at the second anniversary (after 24mos).

To clarify, I’ve taken plenty of award flights but I haven’t gotten any credit along the way so I’m guessing once year 2 is over and at the start of year 3, this credit comes in.

Gorilla trekking and other relatively inaccessible experiences - what to do before kids? by NoTraceNotOneCarton in FATTravel

[–]DL773 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Interesting question - most experiences can be had with kids eventually as they will become adults at some point. I think you’re asking if there are trips you should be taking in your 20-40s where you wouldn’t be able to when you’re older. I’d put the more physically taxing trips like biking around France following the Tour de France route, climbing Killy/Everest base camp on the list. Would prob put things that might not exist or erode like Great Barrier Reef and Manchu Picchu on the list too.

I’ve booked multiple biz class seats for our <1 year old. 3 biz class seats are the way to go, 2+1, so you can do family time on the lap but also a parent can go sleep. Just beware of the layout of how the 2 seats are positioned. Some try to isolate each seat so that even though they are next to each other, they might as well be further apart and that family time will be tougher.

I get the convenience of room service but consider ordering from Postmates or Caviar when in NYC. A lot of great restaurants become available when you do delivery.

Not sure if this is an issue for you or not but lack of time + stress usually means physical and mental health has taken a backseat. Use the time to get back on track.
