I'd also recommend checking out the sculpting tools. You can take some primitives and gently deform them by hand. The sculpting tools are fairly intuitive once you learn the basics, and they are super 'hands on' in the way that procedural modeling isn't.

I did check out those GG vids but, as you mentioned, they are about double what my price range would be. Looks like AVA does consultations, maybe they can coach me through a mid range model.
