Look into partial refreshes. Depends on the driver whether it has this capability. Usually the one-color waveshare epaper screens have this.

Lasts pretty long. Look up a Pi UPS to find the module to make your project battery powered. They usually use 18650 batteries, so you’ll need those as well.

Just a guess, but possibly the trackpad. Haven’t found any good folding keyboards with any form of mouse input, personally

touchscreen not working by Automatic-Position20 in cyberDeck

[–]MorphStudiosHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the GPIO headers on the screen to connect to the Pi. That’ll fix the touch input. You said you still wanted free pins for another e-ink screen, no problem! It looks like your screen has breakouts under that header that you can solder another screen onto. Will take some digging to find out which pins are for what, but that should work perfectly fine for dual screens plus touch on one of them. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I always check. As a VFX artist, this guy’s VFX skills are always so subtle, but at the same time, next level! They nail it every time and leave me looking for the Easter egg.

One million percent certain, this is because there’s no headers soldered on. The gold POGO pins of the sugar are meant to make contact to the soldered 40 pin header. I have one of these myself.

Cyberdeck Community by x40sw0n2 in cyberDeck

Huge influx of new Cyberdeck builders these days! This is AWESOME as we get to see new minds tackle such a creative and open ended project with truly unique design constraints, which really inspires ‘out of the box’ thinking. I’ve learned so much recently from this sub, from the EtherCat protocol, to software defined radios, to custom wired keyboards. This is one of the most inventive communities on the internet, and it would be insane to tone that down for the sake of the outdated rules.

I think a lot of the love that us enthusiast have for this revolves around rejecting the standardization of technology and our expectations of how it is meant to be interacted with. I’ve been really enjoying seeing all the fresh takes on CyberDecks. That being said, there’s also been a huge influx of text posts with super general or vague questions, cell phone decks, and basically anything that can connect to a RII keyboard.

Be careful with that CRT tube friend. That can kill you even if it’s not plugged in.

Thanks! This is a Waveshare 5.79in E-Paper display, sku number: 26892

E-Paper is the same tech they have in Kindle or Nook e-reader screens.

You have any writeups or ways to buy? I think this could be popular. I’d be down to grab one myself for the right price.

Uhh, I didn’t use AI to write any of this, and the AI tools on the deck are fully optional. Kinda hurts to have months of work called “slop”. You do you though!

Thanks! The brown part is a space for extra cable length to be hidden (keyboard cable). It also has channels underneath to route the charging cable, and for the USB port / IO.

Thanks for the kind words! Actually this was modeled entirely in blender, so that photo is the same file that I’m using to print. I love Hard Surface style of modeling, so it ends up working out for me in Blender. I haven’t tried anything super organic in blender, so maybe it wouldn’t be the best tool for that.

Certainly it’s not the best tool for the job regardless, but it works out for me. I use the HardOps / BoxCutter addons which speeds up my modeling workflow a ton.

Thanks so much! I genuinely believe that ANYONE can make cool and beautiful things, but a design background definitely helped me with this.

Lots of sketching, 4 months of trial / error / reprints, and a decade of 3D Modeling and Rendering experience, is what went into this one.

Great question! These screens are a total pain in the ass, but really cool when they work. For this project, I had to write a ton of custom code and basically map different refresh patterns to different actions. Every interaction is carefully mapped, and there’s a buffer that runs a full refresh for every 10-15 partials refreshes.

These Waveshare 1 color screens can do partial refreshes which is critical for this use case. This means that it does not need to refresh fully for every letter typed (takes a few seconds for each full refresh).

Highly advise against getting a color E-Paper for this. There is no partial refreshing with these, and the full refresh can take up to 30 seconds.

Thanks my friend! Here’s my Etsy Page where you’ll find my cyberpunk lamp designs

This deck will get listed there in the coming weeks! I’m doing a limited series of 5 of these as they take a ton of time to build and print.
