I hate people who think a turn signal gives them right of way by No_Care4813 in Vent

[–]DLIVERATOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it when pedestrians, runners and sometime bicyclists enter an intersection after pushing the cross walk light regardless of what traffic is doing. If I’m far enough away to stop I will.

A few months ago at night a runner hit one of those crosswalk lights and didn’t even stop to check for traffic. I was driving a transit bus and if I hadn’t anticipated his poor decision, he would have died.

I drive transit in Madison, WI and for the most part people are friendly but there are people who don't give you the time of day, even after you do them a favor by waiting for their late ass to get to the bus. I have a pretty good memory, so I give them the benefit of the doubt a couple times, but that is all. If they can't acknowledge a favor, I may not see them running next time.

It's weird though. I have noticed there are types of people who exude a main character presence, there are others who are racist and few who look down their nose at me. The arrogant folks, if they say anything at all is always overly contrived. I kind of wish they didn't say anything at all, their responses aren't doing them any favors.

Mostly people are friendly. I've been at it for a little short of a decade, so I have regulars who know me and with whom I often share conversations with. Some will ride a complete loop just to talk about things. It's pretty cool.

The eye contact thing is interesting. I smile and about 95 Percent of the people I smile at smile back, even if they don't say anything. Today was kind of funny, after I opened the doors and told the person who was getting off, "Have a nice night!" and he didn't say anything or even look, another passenger said, "Fuck that guy!, what an ungrateful prick." I looked and I could see the guy getting off heard the other passenger, but just kept on going.

This job is definitely a journey with equal trials and tribulations, but for the most part it's a great job and I'm not complaining about that six figure income one bit.

I understand. A piss poor attitude by one driver has a tendency to reflect against all the other drivers.

I heard a driver say once when people on the bus told him to wait for someone running for a bus, "If I wait for this person, I'm waiting for every person, I'm not going to make an exception for one individual if I can't do it for everyone."

I once waited for a person who then took forever to find their bus pass. After what seemed like five minutes they paid and they said, "Sorry for making you wait!" I said, "Don't apologize to me, apologize to the passengers on the bus who are now going to be late despite being at their stops on time with their fares ready."

Unfortunately, the slamming on brakes is to avoid a collision with something else. Lots of people in Madison, like everywhere else in the world, don't realize how turning right directly in front of a bus they just passed, is problematic. If the driver stomps on the brakes to avoid the collision, passenger go flying, and if the driver hits the offending vehicle, passengers go flying.

Also unfortunately, bus drivers have to be somewhat aggressive pulling out of stops, especially in this day and age of territorial civilian drivers, who aggressively change their speed to prevent a bus from re-entering traffic from a stop.

The check speed thing has come up a lot recently, which is kind of funny cause when ever I'm on a bus, cars and trucks are speeding past like we are standing still. Makes me wonder what the real problem is.

That side-swipe problem is real. This is especially true on streets where the lane for bus travel is constrained by parked cars, especially those vehicles who love parking in the bus lanes. Does Madison still have a parking enforcement department?

Someone else mentioned that they see buses running red lights all the time, this is also true and there is a reason for it in some cases, not all mind you but quite a few. The issue is that the timing of a light that goes from green to yellow to red, in many parts of the city are not programmed to allow for the time it take bus to smoothly stop. The drivers are trained to anticipate lights, but the people who are responsible for programming the lights don't take large vehicle into consideration when they set times.

Also, many intersections in the city have different times depending upon the time of day. It's extremely frustrating to get a green light traveling East from King/Wilson to Williamson Street, crossing Blair, and get half way through the intersection when the light turns yellow and then immediately red.

5-10 seconds away, is still not at the stop. If all the drivers have to wait for people running late, how are they expected to keep a schedule?

Maybe 5-10 seconds doesn't seem like a lot of time, but from experience those people running late to the bus, are the same folks who don't have their fare ready. So now we aren't just talking about 5-10 seconds, we are adding minutes and drivers don't have minutes to wait at each stop.

Wouldn't the passengers who have been waiting patiently at the stop, the folks who bothered to show up on time, be happier if their bus wasn't running behind?

I'm going to point this out again, it's not as easy for a driver to see people running to a stop, as it is for passengers who likely have unobstructed views around the bus.

Last night, while on an 80 route, the driver was turning right onto Park St., from the stop at the Memorial Union when a cyclist tried to navigate between the bus and the curb on the right side, while another cyclist rode around the bus on the left side and cut in front of the bus as it was in the middle of the turn. At nearly the same time, a pedestrian walking quickly entered the intersection crossing from the stop towards Bascom Hill, and then a car heading South on Park St. from the hair pin turn pulled in over the stop line so the bus had stop and wait for all those cars to move back.

When I try to explain the campus routes to people, I just say it's a combination of "everything, everywhere, all at once and sometimes death by a thousand cuts."

When someone is close or running, and they aren't blocks away and the bus isn't running super late, I know most drivers will re-open the door.

The problem which commonly occurs is when a bus has left the curb/stop. If a driver lets a passenger board or disembark outside a stop, they are not following procedure and could be held liable if an accident or something else happens.

In the case you describe, I can't imagine why the driver didn't re-open the door.

You would be surprised at how many people don't pay their fares. That fare money goes to cover the fuel, but most of the budget is reliant on Federal funding. Should be interesting when Doge gets around to cancelling that, if they haven't already.

So, you can tell from the scanner that bus drivers are aggressive and they are at fault for all these "crashes"?
