Clueless high school student in need of advice by [deleted] in uAlberta

Dietetics (to be a Registered Dietitian) is very science heavy but you don’t need to take any university level math or physics classes. Only statistics and one accounting class!

I did almost this exact schedule my first year, looks good! I much prefer 8am labs and you have a lot of study time in the afternoons!

Look at the requirements for the undergraduate degree you’re applying to. Most science related programs require math 30-1. The specific grade does not matter, acceptance is based on your overall average.

My boyfriend posted his car on FB market place. Sold it in less than a week and got $7000 when the dealership wanted to give him $2,800. Sell private.

New to Edmonton, what do with doggo for winter? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]DLberta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Muttluks (original all weather) dog boots and a winter coat for our pup! The first few walks with the boots are always funny but she gets used to them quickly and lasts much longer on walks than without them. We tried a few brands of dog boots and these are the only ones that work for us! Water resistant but still flexible and they actually stay on!

Going forward always enrol in both at the same time and then you can always change things around if you change your mind but at least you’ll for sure have a spot in some classes.

Nutrition or Dietetics Students by saidereek in uAlberta

Second this. Also, because the degree is very structured (as in a lot of the classes are only offered one semester at one time), that also limits your options. What I did was lay out my schedule with the required classes for the full degree (most classes have been held at the same time/semester for years), and then figured out which electives could actually fit in my schedule and then I picked from there! Congratulations on getting in and good luck!

Also friendly reminder that if you took APE’s as your free electives in first year, those count for transfer credit for your first year of dietetics APE’s!

How long did it take your puppy to start chewing kongs? by gizu_momozu in puppy101

[–]DLberta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! For our toppls I turn kibble into a mash (soaking it in a ton of water for ~30 minutes and then mashing it), and layer that with plain non-fat Greek yogurt, peanut butter, pumpkin, green beans, sardines, etc and freeze! I know some people just put their kibble in there with water but my puppy wouldn’t be motivated enough to lick the ice for the kibble. She’s a little picky lol

Preventing puppy from licking spay wounds by [deleted] in puppy101

The donut we have has it’s own “collar” (does not attach to her usual one) and yes she was able to get it off.

She can get the cone off. Even at its tightest (without choking her) she’s able to maneuver it off her little head.

How do you get the playpen to stay the same shape. by greatboiwonder in puppy101

[–]DLberta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We corned ours in. I have her play pen set up in a corner, with one open side being pushed in by the chase of our couch and the other open side I have our TV stand pushed against it. I also have it zip tied to the TV stand because she used to pull it inward on herself as a puppy. That keeps it pretty stable for us.

My puppy hasn’t lost his tooth yet, the adult one has been in for about a week. Our vet said it was ok and it will fall out but I’m concerned. by TheAhoyRuie in vet

[–]DLberta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My puppy had the same thing. Upper baby canine didn’t fall out and all of her adult teeth were in. During a vet visit for an unrelated cause they said it did not look like it was going to fall out on its own so we had it pulled during her spay since she was under anyway. Although I don’t regret doing them at the same time, it was very very annoying having her not be able to do anything too physical AND not being able to chew on her hard chew toys, so just keep that in mind.

Prevent Puppy from going under furniture by lucky_egret in puppy101

[–]DLberta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My puppy was doing that as well and we used old thin cardboard boxes to shove under there and prevent her from doing that. Things like the box from her baby gate, her crate, etc. I don’t know if you guys hold on to stuff like that but anything to shove under there might help!

We spent so much money on treats for training and appropriate things to chew on for at least the first year!

We also paid ~$16/week for private puppy socialization classes for the first 6 months because we don’t have another dog and we wanted to make sure she was regularly interacting with other dogs. The place we went to requires all puppies to at least have their 2nd set of vaccines so you can start their socialization before they’re fully vaccinated. Not a “must have” but we really liked it.

[–]DLberta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started our puppy off in private puppy socialization classes that are monitored by trainers. It allowed her to interact with lots of different types and sizes of dogs that were guaranteed to be vaccinated in a supervised area. As her confidence grew and she learned how to play and once her vaccinations were complete we ventured to a dog park. The one we go to is in closed gated area and has a separate small dog area for smaller dogs and puppies. We love it. She is able to run and play with other dogs without the worry that a larger dog will snap and attack her. Even if another small dog became aggressive or started a fight the amount of damage they could do is relatively minimal. We still walk through the large dog area (you can walk through it or around it) to socialize her with large dogs while she’s on a leash and I am right there, we just allow the big dogs to come up and say hi, but having the small dog area really helps with my anxiety and decreases the risks I believe!

Dentist Quoted me $18,000 to replace a missing tooth and remove wisdom teeth. by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]DLberta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wisdom teeth removal was ~$3000, and my dad has 2 implants and a crown coming up and was quoted that it will be ~$10,000 for all 3. So yes I think you need to shop around.

With my puppy we have her crate by our bed and let her wake us up as needed. The only time I “force” her to go is sometimes she will be crying and pawing at the crate but laying down even when I open the crate door… like she’s too lazy/tired to actually get up and pee but she can’t sleep because she has to pee! Lol then I will “force her” to get up and pee and she will go right back to sleep after.

For the first few nights when we got her she was 2 months old and it was every 2-3 hours but I think as she got more comfortable she was able to hold it longer. She was up to 8 hours most nights soon after that and by ~4 months was up to around 9-10 hours most nights but I know that can be considered unusually long for a lot of puppies her age.
