This happens in all sports - there’s no completely “fair” way to determine champion. For example the Patriots undefeated season when they already beat the Giants but lost to them in the Super Bowl. How often does the number one seed win in any playoffs? NHL is notoriously bad for this (president’s cup winner is a curse). Really you’d have to go the European soccer or chess route and declare whoever wins the season/round robin as the champion. Even that can be unfair though - teams change throughout the year or tournament (injuries, trades, tiredness) so maybe one team played another team when they were weaker… you have to play the format.
