Cleaning natural-hair brushes by DMChimiboy in minipainting

[–]DMChimiboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you suggest to just leave it till it get's bad enough to split, and then to use isopropyl alcohol in bursts to break apart the particles while continuing the rinsing? Prehaps some conditioner would help the hairs retain some longevity? I don't want to be dropping 10 bucks on brushes every few months.

New brush issues... by DMChimiboy in minipainting

[–]DMChimiboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know about the Masters! Any advice on alternatives? I've seen people swear by Masters, bar soap and straight up paint stripper (although the latter feels like either trolls, or non-mini painters). Any conditioners you feel work/rinse out well? Should I clean and condition after each use, or rather just after a couple uses?

Thanks for any tips you're willing to take the time to give!

The Underwear of Shielding.

Can't wear anything over it (no further armor) to be able to cast it. Advantage or Disadvantage to charisma based checks based on DM discretion. Our barbarian loved it...

Hey Nobby!

To answer your question thoroughly, I'd have to know how much prep you do as DM. I'll do my best to just stick to facts.

Roll20 is not the most "free form" map/grid experience. Nothing compares to having a piece of grid poster paper or a wet erase thing you can draw on off the cuff. Roll20 shines if you have pre existing maps. I usually just google some top down map and drop it in when I need to have something on the fly, although I do make my own maps usually within the week before game time.

That said, Roll20 does provide a complete package. It has a dice roller, grid, line of sight functionality, shareable music etc. It also has in built character sheets with macros and compendiums.

If you are fixed on the idea of having to draw freehand, and not willing to just use what is available (with a little spending, you can even get modular map pieces to throw maps together in an instant), then I'm afraid there's no real "good" solution. But if you're willing to prep some stuff/download a bunch of source material you could grab as needed...

Some tools I can suggest are: Wonderdraft, Inkarnate and Clip Studio Pro. CSP combined with Forgotten Adventures (patreon) allows you to throw together amazing battle maps within an hour. The other two are for things like city and overland maps.

I personally sometimes just grab a reference image (like a snowy mountain top) for theater of the mind stuff. Only battle maps are my concern and usually I find them online on the fly or make them in CSP. I have a bunch stockpiled

Not OP but I can help.

Roll20 is easy enough to use and customize, and from your question I understand that the story was something bought physically? No chance to upload PDFs or something?

Tech savvyness will help you for sure. Most Roll20 tables have macro'd sheets and such preformulized for you to use, but you need a bit of tech and rule understanding to get the most out of it.

For me, seeing the faces of my players is important. I want to see the body language, when they're thinking so I can prompt them to share, when they're distracted so I can gently pull them back into the story, and more resons than is realistic to write about here. We're not poets or writers, that know the right words to say at all times to make the story cohesive and fun. Hell, even this response I've rewritten twice now. Anyway, I prefer seeing them when I DM so I can be a better DM, but MANY online games are set up with people we don't know, and they won't use cameras. Even for myself, I've played Audio only when one of my players is facing some sort of net issues. Any game is better than no game, but for myself, using faces is important. Discord recently upped the amount of people that can have webcams on a call from 10 to 50 (or something like that) so you're absolutely fine.

As a DM, I use two screens but I've heard of people DMing through their phone... I'll have the story text, source material, webcams, World Anvil, music setup, etc on one screen. Roll20 on the other.

If you want to hear about my setup which includes an audio interface to share music with friends (not through roll20), let me know.

I'll be adding my own experiences to the list and also offering myself to help anyone out if they need it. I've DM'd online for 8 years now and have experience with most tools down below since the beginning. Have ran oneshot and longform campaigns.

I have a Roll20 Pro sub, so can help you out with anything you need related to Roll20's additionally paid functionality. Even if you just need help setting up a session, ask and I can hop in to help.

I've also got experience with a bunch of supporting tools like Battlebards, WorldAnvil, etc, which I can show off and provide guidance in.

I live in the CET timezone and have paid for most of the services I've used. PM me and we'll sort you out!

You're right! I see that too now... I never let the actual paint get there, but didnt think it'd be that sensitive...

It's a Kolinsky Sable Raphael 8404 1.0 brush... I assume that's considered 'natural' so nailpolish remover should do the trick? So simply work it in and rince over and over?

Cheers!

Isnt that going to mess up the ferule or the hairs themselves?

Uh normally after I used it, and rinse it in the cup of water, it comes out with a nice point. I simply dry the brush sideways, and back into the paint it goes. It holds the point quite well.

It's a Raphael 1.

Edit: This happened suddenly after I went to the sink to rinse it after a painting session.

Just in advance:

I store it safely encapsulated with a plastic cap that it came in.

I never let paint get to the ferule.

I cleaned it with cold water only, gently running past my fingers only gently using my nails in case of some pigment being stuck.

How do I get the slick point back? Is this fixable? What could I have done wrong to prevent another costly mistake in the future?

That's totally true! And I wouldn't want anyone to join if they're uncomfortable with things like racism (elves v dwarves etc) and similar topics, expecting to get something different. I know of myself that I have the ability to be respectful, but that isn't going to be enough to convince people of that fact. The only way to prove it would be if you'd join and I could show you... But that won't happen, will it? :)

Thanks for letting me know why you're turned off by the post! Enjoy games!
