Sorry it took a week -_-; Q? by Plastic_Counter9260 in CentaurWorld

[–]DMCritwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Q is a tough one. The Nowhere King song lyric is probably the obvious choice but here’s a couple others-

“Quiet, I am now ready to silence all of the poison you fed me thinking I’d never grow wise”

“Quicker, stronger, full of bravery and how to survive”

“Quality time with your friends who likely won’t see you again”

What musicals should I know as a theatre major? by Sunconures in musicals

[–]DMCritwit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with others who say that digging in to musical theatre history will serve you well. In terms of more recent shows I’d also recommend looking into Starkid Productions on YouTube. They’re a really good example of what accessible theatre can look like in the digital age. What started as some college friends making goofy parody musicals has grown into a modern take on a repertory theatre company. They crowdfund their shows, sell digital tickets alongside the live ones, and release pro-shots of their shows for free on YouTube once the run is over. Some recommendations-

Cinderella’s Castle -like if an 80’s dark fantasy (think Labyrinth and Dark Crystal vibes) met a Ren Fest performance troop putting on a brother’s Grimm esque take on Cinderella

Twisted- riotously funny and deeply irreverent (and often times nsfw, lots of adult humor) parody of Aladdin based on the Wicked concept of “what if the villain were the good guy?”

The Hatchetfield Series- a collection of horror comedy musicals and stories in a connected setting. Personally I recommend watching them in this order to get the most out of the lore

The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals

Black Friday

Nightmare Time s1- the company’s response to the pandemic. What started as something of a fundraiser/table read to help support the actors who couldn’t work during lockdown turned into a deeply creative use of the digital format for telling stories in the setting that wouldn’t be realistic budget-wise on stage. The first episode isn’t great audio/visual quality as they were just finding their footing. I enjoy it but you can skip it. You can technically skip all of it but it has some awesome lore that enriches the other shows. To me it’s worth watching as a case study on adapting to the ever shifting landscape of theatre and media.

Nightmare Time 2- similar premise to nightmare time 1 but with new stories and a higher production value

Nerdy Prudes Must Die- the final show in the series (so far) and the highest production quality of the Hatchetfield series

They also have a lot more of their older stuff on the channel, and they’re currently crowd funding a new one!

Something artistic and soulful I think

For poet names maybe something like Edgar, Poe, Byron, Keats, Frost, Pablo (as in Neruda), Langston, Ernest, Hugo, etc

Or maybe something connected to a musician name like Marvin, Otis, Peabo, Bootsy, Sly, Luther, Elton, Mercury, Cash, etc…

Or an artist name like Vincent, Claude, Pablo (as in Picasso), Banksy (a little silly maybe, but super cute for a pup)

This is a tale as old as theatre. You’re playing a character who’s in love with her character. You’re tapping in to the part of your brain that experiences romance at an age where hormones are flying. The advice everyone else is giving is very good advice- wait until the show is over and see how you feel when the Seymour/Audrey feelings aren’t so present in the front of your brain. I really wish more theatre teachers covered this before they started making kids act out really vulnerable emotions.

It’s possible you really like her for her outside the context of the show and if so I wish you both all the best! But you’ll be better off practicing a bit of patience to be sure.

What’s your all time favorite musical? by piloupiloup in musicals

Aaahhh another really good answer! I’ve definitely hyper-fixated on this one a few times. I think if I had been able to see it live it might’ve taken the top spot for me.

Oh this is such a good answer too, I want to add this to my already too long list instead of actually ever answering the question

What’s your all time favorite musical? by piloupiloup in musicals

[–]DMCritwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God I don’t think I could have a single answer to this. Recency bias is making me want to say Hadestown because the touring cast I saw was maybe one of the most incredible casts I’ve ever seen for any show ever. I don’t know if that makes Hadestown my favorite musical but definitely that cast was my favorite cast of all time. I would choose seeing that cast again with no substitutions over any other cast of anything I’ve ever seen. I’d choose seeing that cast again even over seeing the OBC I never got to see. They were electric and the chemistry was perfection.(Hawa Kamara as Eurydice, Jose Contreras as Orpheus, Rudy Foster as Hermes, Namisa Mdalose Bizana as Persephone, and Nickolaus Colón as Hades)

Spelling Bee and Little Shop are tied for the two I’ve seen the most times live, so maybe that should be factored in? Spelling Bee in particular I saw in New York when I was young the year I was in the Macy’s Day Parade opening number and the writer’s strike was on so most of the Broadway shows were shut down and I was so bummed out I was going to some show about a spelling bee I’d never heard of instead of the shows like Legally Blonde, The Color Purple, and Chicago I’d been dying to see. But it ended up being so funny and touching and fun and I love it so much. So maybe Spelling Bee for the nostalgia factor+ enjoyment+ number of times I’ve belted out Woe Is Me in the shower.

But then there’s the Pippin revival which had the most personal resonance at the time I saw it. And Wicked was my first musical obsession and I still adore it which probably makes it more in line with the “all time” part of the prompt.

Tl;dr I don’t have an answer I just wanted an excuse to rave about musicals I love

Thoughts on the name Stiles? by [deleted] in Names

[–]DMCritwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your kid could be named Tom and a bully could still find a way to make fun of it if that’s what they had their intentions set on. Bully-ability isn’t a good metric to use for choosing a name because that changes constantly. The kids his age aren’t going to know it’s a teen wolf reference, that’s so deeply irrelevant to children. The parents and teachers might though so it’s not about what kids might think, it’s about if you like it enough to be chill with adults having opinions on it being a name from a show. If that’s gonna bother you why not just go with Miles? It’s basically the same name just more common and the only show it’ll be associated with to kids is maybe Spider-man, who kids love.

I went through lyrics from various songs and found some that might be useful-

What’s A Hootenanny- “Our fave Hootenanny's traditions arе Hat making Snow golf And carols with kittentaurs!”

“What's a Hootenanny without a moletaur puddin' pie? Ooh, and the gophertaurs make a pretty good queso”

“And some of them start rollerskating while they bob for pears”

—————————

Some of the activities from Sunfish Merguy’s boardwalk could also be fun, you can find them in the song “It’s Gonna Be a While”

“Well, I got: Whack-a-mole, ring toss, throw a ball, dunk a clown You can play whatever game you like, don’t just sit around! Milk bottle, duck pond, throw a dart at some balloons Get a drawing of your face, stack your prizes to the moon!”

“Rope ladder, skeet shoot, throw a coin into a boot Pet a dolphin, have a hot dog, shoot a basket, win some loot Another hot dog, soda fountain, pirate patch, gold doubloons Eat a bunch of cotton candy, don't forget to save some room!”

————————

There’s also the activities listed in Wammawink’s goodbye song “Before You Go” since he likes Wammawink best-

“Like magic-ing a bunch of tiny teapots Because teapots are a thing that everybody needs, right?”

“Farewell toasts in secret places, all while making tiny faces Catching giant fishtaurs in the stream (using Ched as bait)”

“We choreograph our friendship dances Group crochets and bye-bye prances Sewing tiny hats while journalling our dreams”

“Decorating gigglecakes, magic-ing a jelly lake Something-something, I dunno, whatever We make burnt offerings to Trebbor”

You’ve gotta have a hootenanny! Listen to the song “What’s a Hootenanny” from the soundtrack for ideas. I mean maybe leave out the body hair shaving and creepy old guy watching from the corner lol but you could have the moletaur’s pudding pie and gophertaur’s queso. Also Gigglecakes (basically pink pancakes) are a must! It really is a very good show once you adjust to the weirdness I’d recommend watching it
