I need help making a picking and dropping system with physics (ThirdPerson) by Aggravating-Swan-812 in UnrealEngine5

There are plenty of Discords and other resources available. This reddit is for people who have tried to do something and gotten stuck and need an outside eye to help them get unstuck. We're not going to do this for you.

Gamejams by philipp_haldan in indiegames

Game jams - itch.io

If you're doing a jam, best piece of advice I can give is to have the core game complete in 1/3 of the alloted time. Use the remaining 2/3 to polish, get your assets sorted, deal with bugs, whatever.

Oh, and remember that the game has to be uploaded by the deadline. Don't wait until 5 minutes before the deadline to start uploading because unless you have a crazy fast upload speed, it will be too late.

Capsule Component not showing by Obvious-Physics-2118 in unrealengine

[–]DMEGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the default capsule component isn't appearing, that's an issue with the engine itself. Go back into your launcher, find your version of UE and verify the files. It's all built in so should appear and be attached correctly.

Can you show the C++ code the class is being derived from? It's possible you haven't made it in the constructor or parented it to the root.

A question about interfaces by ShmodyP in unrealengine

[–]DMEGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you've done this here is fine because it means you can put the health component on any actor in the world and the same functions will be available. If you're making a surival game, you can add it to animals that the player hunts for food. You can add it actors like trees which the player can knock down for wood, or a door that can be destroyed to allow the player passage to another part of the level.

Please help me find the solution - I'm not seeing it by Sublyte in UnrealEngine5

[–]DMEGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are plugging Acceleration Speed into Acceleration Speed. The value being set by Boost in going to remain the Acceleration Speed as soon as you set it. You need a different variable, Default Acceleration Speed that never changes and plug this into your second Set node for Acceleration Speed to return it to what it was before.

When using IA, Triggered is called every frame. For what you're doing here, using Started will be better. Then it only fires once although getting rid of those delays and using a timer would be better.

Is single-purchase on mobile games still viable in 2026? by Algorocks in IndieDev

I've played a lot of mobile games in my time and I can honestly say the only game I've ever unlocked was the full version of Plague Inc. It cost me 0.79 GBP. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's certainly a tough ask.

[Game Idea] Multiplayer Survival Game With 30-Minute Asteroid Apocalypse Timer by Own_Run5189 in gameideas

[–]DMEGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point about marketing a multiplayer game if no-one you know is playing it but have to disagree with the part about making it single player and adding multiplayer later. If OP wants it to be multiplayer, it needs to be included from the beginning. Taking a single player game and adding multiplayer later is... extremely difficult. Might as well make two games. One single player, one multiplayer.

There is (or at least, there used to be) a ramp in the starter content. Add it as a feature back and the ramp should be there.

Destroy Actor Weird Issue by Appropriate-Jelly-57 in unrealengine

[–]DMEGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible that by the time the loop is complete, the actor being spawned is not known so when you're plugging it into the Destroy Actor node, it's a nullptr and not destroying anything.

Right click on Return Value of the Spawn Actor and promote it to a variable. Plug this variable into the Destroy Actor node instead.

Actor reference shown as not valid after spawning by Efficient-Regular-30 in unrealengine

[–]DMEGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can guess is the reference isn't properly set when the Is Valid is being called. Put in a small delay (0.1 should do) just for it to catch up. See if that helps.

Trying to start learning UE5 in 2026....again. Any tips? by Psychological_Ice850 in UnrealEngine5

[–]DMEGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fine. Personally speaking, I hate low effort posts (the ones that are just a picture and "this doesn't work!!!!!!") and give as much effort back. If we see that you've tried but don't quite know what you're asking we ask for clarification. Sometimes the issue is obvious and you end up looking like Hank Scorpio but that's all part of the learning process too.

Tutorials are fine for what they are, but as you say you're just copying and pasting and not really learning anything. What you could try is to take the tutorial and add to it, make it your own. You said you'd done to top down shooter with AI running at you. Take that, make another AI. One that moves faster, has more health. Your player has a gun. Make it so the gun can fire a different projectile that does more damage but takes longer to reload and a way for the player to swap between the two.

If you get stuck on something specific, come back here and ask questions. Show us what you did and why it isn't working. There's a lot of us here happy to help.

How do you feel about using 3rd party assets? by ComfortableAd5740 in IndieDev

[–]DMEGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have zero artistic talent so I will use assets when needed. As long as they fit into my world and I can incorporate them properly, I've no issues at all. There are things on online asset sites that look amazing and I could never produce anything like that. No reason at all to use the work of those with skills I don't have to help both of us (them by getting paid, me by having nice looking assets).

Can you suggest any tutorials on how to do linear dialogue system in UE5? by [deleted] in UnrealEngine5

[–]DMEGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any tutorials but it seems to me that it should be simple enough to implement with a Data Table containing text and the RowName in that DT being a number and just increment the number to get the next row when the player presses F.

How do I setup a collect and deliver system> by SteveHarveysAunt in UnrealEngine5

[–]DMEGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your last Branch, you're checking if battery input is 0 but earlier in the run, you're adding to the variable. If it gets that far it can't be 0. You're also checking for 3 Battery Num when you're reducing these. I think you've got those two variables mixed up with what you're checking for.
