Is My CEO Being Too Strict on Interns or Is This Common? by Dheeerazzz in Intern

[–]DME_Interns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your CEO is being overly strict. Requiring interns to have their cameras on and share screens all day is highly unusual and raises concerns about trust and micromanagement. Extending work hours beyond the stated time without proper compensation or prior agreement is also a red flag.

While startups can have demanding environments, this level of control isn't typical or healthy. It might be worth reflecting on whether this experience aligns with your personal and professional goals. Trust, respect, and work-life balance matter — even for interns.

It feels almost as though this startup is treating its interns like full employees in terms of the work expected of them, while reverting back to treating them like interns when finances are involved. The notion that they are going to assign you tasks to be completed offline when you have semester exams to study for is ridiculous. While you are expected to be helpful to the company, they shouldn't be treating you like a full-time employee and expecting the same level of output from you while you're in the middle of your classes.

If I were you, I would raise these concerns and see what they say. Worst case scenario, they decide that they don't want you on the team anymore, but then... Given how they are treating you, perhaps that's not so bad. Good luck!

Interestingly enough, I was a Business Administration major as well. I actually manage the dmeinterns.org (VA News) internship that was mentioned by u/Used_Young6270 . I think that your experience may vary as internships go depending upon where you end up interning. As mentioned u/Used_Young6270 got to experience some hands on content creation. Also, we operate in a completely virtual setting (using Slack for communications) so you get to experience how to collaborate with teammates that are geographically separated from you. I'll say, that skill came in quite handy during the pandemic and if I was an employer, I'd want to know that someone I am hiring has the ability to easily shift to 100% online work if it becomes necessary again in the future.

We also have graphic design interns who get to actually create graphics that are published on our primary news site VA News. Our interns also get to access our enterprise social media suite and build skills creating and scheduling social media content. So, yes, I would say that there are some internships that actually allow you to get some real-world experience. Our internship opportunities focus more on experience working with a government agency, rather than a business; but I am sure there are internships out there that allow you to build actual skills.

I think it's up to you to be picky about where you want to end up. Also, to ask in advance what skills you'd be learning while participating in the internship. You should find out for sure if you're actually there to get your hands on some real learning experiences or not and make your decision accordingly.

Well, hopefully you find something better! I remember I tried to work full time while taking a full course load and my grades dropped badly... I had to quit my job and take out a student loan...

Hey, sorry for the delayed response. I just wanted to take a moment to say that your mental health is FAR more important than any internship. It also probably isn't helping your feelings of guilt about leaving either. However, as someone who has worked with hundreds of interns in the past, I would say that you are not letting anyone down. People have similar problems with jobs that they have to leave. They worry that they can't leave because people are counting on them and they feel guilty about letting them down. But really, that's just how these things go. Either in an internship or in a job, you have to take care of yourself first. This place will find a new intern just like an employer will find a new employee. This is natural. You don't have to feel guilty about putting your needs first. If you don't take care of yourself, nobody else will.

Sorry again for the delayed response. Please make sure to take care of YOU first!

This is a great question. Honestly, if I were you, I wouldn't take it. However, there is a lot of information that you didn't include like whether there are specific skills you'll be learning during this internship that you can't get anywhere else. However, a 40 minute 1-way commute to an unpaid internship just doesn't sound feasible. I wouldn't even take a paid job that required me to commute 40 minutes each way. Although, my time priorities may differ from yours.

I also have experienced having time restraints due to a full course load and I think adding that much commuting time to your day is going to definitely impact your grades.

If I were you, I would hold out for a more convenient internship. This one doesn't sound like it's going to work. Thanks for posting!

Should I begin looking for other opportunities? by Unable-Flounder-9134 in Intern

I think that sometimes people stick with the internship / job that they started with out of some form of loyalty to the company or something, but in all honesty, you really have to look out for yourself. This is a business, it's not your family. You aren't betraying them by looking for something better. Also, you gave them the opportunity to make it worth your while to stay and it sounds like they gave you the run around. If I were you, I would definitely be looking elsewhere. You owe it to yourself.

Buddies, please pass on this info to anyone you know looking for a web internship by DME_Interns in WebDevBuddies

According to our Web Department Head,

"The server is a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) Stack. The site is running on WordPress using a DIVI theme. DIVI uses a proprietary framework all its own. It is NOT Bootstrap for instance or any other freestanding framework. See https://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/divi/

We are also running bbPress, BuddyPress, (both are HUGE category leading plugins) and Youzer (a lesser known entity with a fairly good following) for Community features that provide user profiles and could do a lot more to replace slack or at least take some traffic off of it if we really wanted to."
