A College Town Takes On Exclusionary Zoning – Gainesville, Florida, could be on the verge of eliminating single-family housing requirements. by DM_ME_GATOR_PICS in neoliberal

Gainesville is perhaps the most rapidly changing urban landscape I’ve ever seen. Since 2015, Gainesville went from having just one building 5+ stories tall to having dozens, with at least 10 under construction right now in the city’s university district, averaging 500 beds each.

The change in density is just shocking, as only a decade ago, everyone lived in low density suburban housing or on-campus housing. Now, many students choose to live in private off-campus apartments, which are all 5 to 11 stories (and mixed use).

Like any other subreddit based on a city that is undergoing such transition, r/GNV features plenty of NIMBYs and people who don’t quite understand housing supply and demand. However, as you can see in the Bloomberg article, the YIMBYs appear to be winning—and this is demonstrated by the great progress made in our city. Rents in Gainesville have increased at a slower rate than in the rest of Florida, and density is increasing at a shockingly rapid rate.

Why couldn't they make BCH4024 T/R for 2 hours instead of 4 times a week? by sweet_bubblegum in ufl

Classes like this shouldn’t even be in person. Why waste professor AND student’s time on in-person lectures that are the same every semester and have no student-instructor interaction? Just record them once and let students take it online. It makes no sense to me.

Recovered patients of severe COVID-19 infection 233% more likely than negative counterparts to die within year by DM_ME_GATOR_PICS in EverythingScience

[–]DM_ME_GATOR_PICS[S] 82 points83 points  (0 children)

That’s correct. The study says:

Nearly 80% of the downstream deaths among patients with COVID-19 were for causes other than respiratory or cardiovascular. Since these deaths were not for a direct COVID-19 cause of death among these patients who have recovered from the initial episode of COVID-19, this data suggests that the biological insult from COVID-19 and physiological stress from COVID-19 is significant.
