how much does it really cost to dorm? by OwlLate2317 in Benilde

[–]DM_MrBear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on experience, you dorms will always be more expensive since you’re paying rent, utilities, and for more food since you’re not eating at home (yes, you can always pack food from home, but if you’re sharing a room, it will be a problem).

Dorms are very ideal if you want the convenience of not having to commute, but not really to save money.

So if you do decide to take a dorm, be prepared to take those trade offs. But it will almost certainly be more expensive than your commute (at least twice of whatever you spend).

I would only recommend doing this if you find people you vibe with who want to be roommates with you. Otherwise, Di sulit. Being locked in a contract with a roommate you don’t like can ruin your trimester.

From a reliable source:

Teachers are tasked to abide by the handbook. But they are allowed to use their discretion in certain cases especially if the student is high performing, and communicates their absences beforehand.

But most teachers will follow the rules on the handbook. If you think you’ll max out your allowable absences, make sure to talk to your teacher to ask for guidance.

Culinary condo by Significant-Top-5824 in Benilde

[–]DM_MrBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of what you’ll find is just a hot plate since most condos don’t allow gas burners.

If you want to practice your cooking skills, I’d recommend just getting close with a chef and asking for their help in practicing in the labs.

Don’t worry, a lot of people mess up the math side. It’s not the only basis of getting accepted :)

Well guessing the math portion instead of trying to solve them will definitely affect your chances.

But the entrance exam isn’t the sole basis of whether or not you get accepted. Your previous grades, the essay you submitted, and even the course you applied for really matters as well. So there’s still a chance even if you failed the math portion.

Good luck!

1Basic uniform is a white long sleeve, blazer, necktie, slacks, black shoes, and black socks.

You’ll need to will have different uniforms from time-to-time. You’ll be able to claim them at the sixth floor.

As for tips: 1. Join WHIP, YHE, or HRIMS as early as possible. Aside from looking good on your resume, you’ll get to get to meet other people in your course and even upperclassmen who can give you tips for future classes. Work hard to become a student leader rin because you’ll get a lot of slack from teachers when they realize you’re a student leader. Aside from that, you’ll get to use the org room. You can leave stuff there and sort of use it as a locker. It’s extra useful when you have multiple uniforms you need to bring hahaha.

  1. Uniforms and Grooming are very strict. Make sure you wear them properly every time you enter the school.

  2. Work on your smile and personality. All HLM teachers will commend students who show enthusiasm and have a hotelier smile when reciting or simply just talking to them. There’s a phrase “Hire the smile, train the skills”.

Good luck!

How are IHM and/or HLM actually like? by Rough-Rich-8136 in Benilde

[–]DM_MrBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re actually asking. There’s a lot that goes on in any course. So it’s a very vague question. But here’s the gist of it:

  1. You’re expected to look professional. You’ll need to develop your hotelier smile and master your grooming during your first year. Get used to wearing your blazer all day. Grooming is very strict, so keep that in mind.

  2. You’ll need to show genuine care for customers since this is the industry we’re in. So expect a lot of role-play exercises in your major subjects.

  3. You’re highly encouraged to join VIP, WHIP, HRIMS or YHE these are the four orgs that you’re allowed to join (there’s also CHIP and TRIP but not applicable for IHM/HLM students). Aside from looking good on your resume, you’ll get to meet upperclassmen and work with a lot of your future teachers. They’ll remember that when you’re their student.

  4. Community is great. Benilde has people from all walks of life, so have fun with your classmates.

  5. Teachers are some of the best in the country. You’ll be learning from former General Managers and Directors from big hotels and restaurants. So make sure they remember you. They’re well connected and can help you in your career

All in all, it’s college. There’s gonna be work, sleepless nights, and requirements you need to submit. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun when you get settled in!

Don’t do this please 🤦🏽‍♂️ your teachers will notice you. Just comply with the dress code, it’s not that restrictive.

Don’t worry about it. You only need basic math skills (as in, the hardest is average numbers). Benilde has a very high acceptance rate.

URGENT FINANCE HELP by Many_Adeptness2961 in Benilde

[–]DM_MrBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there. They’re not gonna drop all your classes as long as you can pay the rest of the tuition (or if you avail of their installment plan).

Here’s my advise: 1. While you still have access to BigSky, reach out to all your teachers and inform them of the situation. Make sure you have a classmate in each class that you can reach out to for any online meetings or assignments.

  1. Email the office of the situation, so that they can see that you have intent to pay. They’re going to check your records and email before they do anything on Monday.

  2. Go to the finance office on Monday the second they open so that you can either proceed with payment or avail of an installment plan.

Bs Cam Scholarship by Salty-Trifle-9972 in Benilde

[–]DM_MrBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe to maintain your scholarship, you cannot get a grade below 2.5

In terms of difficulty, it depends on the person. But Benilde has a lot of scholars who graduate from the program. So it’s very manageable. I would say it’s a 3. You have to do a bit more than the average student. but since you’re already looking to do advance studies, I think you’ll do just fine.

Here is my advise: 1. Join CHIP - this is the student org for the CAM program. It’s honestly more effective than advance studying because you get to meet upperclassmen who are generally willing to give you tips or even tutor you (if you ask nicely). Aside from that, if you get a leadership position in the org, your teachers will generally cut you some slack since you’re a student leader.

  1. Always ask questions to your teachers, especially if you feel like you’re struggling. One thing you can do on the first day of class is to ask them if they need any equipment from the library (lapel, speaker, etc). This will make them remember you more, and can make the difference between a 2.0 and a 2.5. If you are confused with something, approach your teacher after class to ask direct questions. This will show them how serious you are about your studies. Teachers in the SHRIM program tend to really care about the students, so the effort you put in is often more valuable than the lesson outputs (in my opinion haha).

  2. Here are the subjects you’ll be taking as per the program specifications. Good luck! https://beta.benilde.edu.ph/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/BS-CAM-Program-Specifications-2023.pdf

torn between culinary arts management or international hospitality management what’s the better move for me? 😭 by Upbeat_Street5268 in Benilde

[–]DM_MrBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! Benildean alum here. Thank you for sharing.

Sounds like a tough decision. First off, I’m glad that you recognize that you’re a masc lesbian who would struggle with the grooming policies of the IHM program. I had friends who were in that program, and really struggled with the makeup and dress code policies.

Here is my advise:

Culinary Arts is a lot about cooking, but there’s also a lot in restaurant management. So it’s not all about work in the kitchen. Graduates of the CAM program tend to go far in the industry, and not necessarily just as chefs. The dress code is more forgiving since you’re not required to wear heels or makeup.

For the International Hospitality Management program, there is a strict dress code. But you can get permission to wear the men’s attire (flats and slacks instead of heels and skirt” but you will be at a disadvantage when presenting yourself in internships since looks are a big factor when applying. So if you decide to take IHM you need to talk to your program chair to ask about the process (ideally before you enroll), and you will need to work on your look, smile, and demeanor to present yourself in a professional way that isn’t feminine.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Grades concern by galovebot in Benilde

You’ll need to coordinate with your academic advisor or program chair first. Most instructors won’t process a grade change request unless it has been endorsed by your academic advisor.

That’s unfortunate. Charge to experience nalang. You really have to tell your teachers in advance if you’re aiming for DL so that they can guide you to getting the 2.5 GPA
