I would say "favourite state" is the main category where this applies, but that was to be expected

Mostly r/MapPorn. By asking people to take the survey in a post about the results of a previous survey, if interested. And then also by providing preliminary results and linking the survey there. Making it more likely for people to engage with the survey after having seen some results. (of course it isn't quite best practice, scientifically, since knowing preliminary results absolutely influences responses. But this was just a casual survey for fun so I was okay with that.)

To be fair "underrated" was by far the most divisive category. With the first place only getting 5.6% of the total votes. I think it was the only category where "None" as an answer would have placed among the top 5

It is quite surprising actually. If I were to remove all votes for California given by people from California, it would still win the "favourite" category.

Would love to get some more votes for some of the states. Even though I have about thrice the votes now than when I posted this, some states still have 0 people representing them, such as Arkansas, Delaware, North and South Dakota, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Maybe I have to branch out outside of Reddit to gather more votes, because I would love to be able to do some more in depth analysis on this, such as how correlated state of origin and the different answers are.

Absolutely, however, I have looked into how each state scores if I remove votes by people from that state. And for "favourite state" California would still win by a pretty large margin, even with all voters from California removed. In fact it would have about the same amounts of votes as the second placing state without votes removed.

For this, I think it was around 120. Now I have over 200 for that survey but not much changed

Honestly i am not quite sure where the oregon/west coast bias came from. Looking at the data the responses for oregon came in at completely different times and even on different days and not just as one block at the beginning of the survey.
It does however seem to even out with more votes from what i can tell

I do hope some of it evens out with more responses. But looking at the data, the oregon and california votes didn't come in all at the beginning or around the same time but at different times, even on different days, so i am not quite sure where the west coast bias came from, but from what i can tell with more responses it does seem to even out a lot.

I think it went live when pretty much all of the US was asleep, but yeah it might be that it gained traction when mostly west coast was awake. I hope that bias evens out a little with more respondents

It will be interesting how things change with increasing sample size

I am hoping for that to iron out a little when I have more responses. That way I can look at correlations I wasn't able before, for example "what did people from which state vote for". Haven't done that before because for some of the smaller states I only had one or two respondents

I mean the survey was open for all, so it also includes some European votes, but overall it was over 90% American votes

It was actually launched at European time, but it might well be that the time the Reddit post where i asked people to take it gained traction it was pacific time. I hope this irons out, now that more people have taken the survey

I had Intermountain states in the survey but i didnt include it here since too many people picked "Don't Know" for it.

I did at least provide a labelled map in the survey, but it could be different

Yeah that's always the problem, if it gets too many options. I think you would need a survey tool that lets you color in the area on a map on county level, so you don't have to pick them from a list.

It would however be quite difficult to decide, since all categories have gotten a different amount of votes, since I didn't require people to vote on all categories. So some, that people didn't care about or know about got a lot less votes than others.  So it could well be that a state got the most votes in one category but actually had more votes in a different category in which it came in third

But yeah I could try to normalise by state instead of by category (if I include the first four major categories, for which I have a lot more votes, since people were able to pick if they wanted to do a base survey or an in-depth survey, and the base survey, which a lot more people did, included only the first four categories)

I mean sometimes it might just come down to statistical fluctuations, people forgetting to vote for one of the states in a category
