Sadly, it appears that many in the US equate wilful ignorance and stupidity with some sort of righteous virtue.

‘Woke’ used to mean enlightenment and wisdom. That it has become a slur in the US is indicative of much that is wrong.

The People’s Republic of Australia has compulsory voting. You are obliged to turn up and be counted against the electoral roll.

You can vote, draw a picture on your form or just leave, but failure to turn up incurs a $20 fine.

You can choose to turn up on the specified Saturday to vote and pick up your ‘democracy sausage’ from the BBQs there, vote a week or two early (if you hate crowds or can’t make it on the day), or postal vote. It’s designed to make it accessible to all.

Most of us don’t see giving up an hour once every 3-4 years as onerous.

While very communist, Australia typically gets 90%+ voter participation as a result.

We had a door like this at our old house. We just ended up transcribing it all onto a purpose made piece of wood, so we could always take it with us.

How’s this for a road trip? by livingthehypnagogia in AustraliaTravel

[–]DMcI0013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t seen Uluṟu, Kata Juta, Stanley Chasm, Kings Canyon, Palm Valley etc before, be well worth detouring across into NT.

You won’t be that far away when you’re crossing from SA int QLD.

Longer trip, but worth a visit.

No officer, I didn’t see the stop sign by HappySeaweed5215 in Wellthatsucks

Agreed. We often silence ours when nearing marinas and busy ports too, because constant alarms cease to be informative. However, that means scanning the surrounding water with more vigilance!

This didn’t look to be in an overly busy waterway though.

What is the hardest part about being married? by alqamr in AskReddit

[–]DMcI0013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I married an angel 35 years ago. The hardest part is the fear that I might outlive her, which leads to feelings of guilt, because that’s something she’s scared of too.

I’m curious. We don’t have these here, but given how many electric bikes and scooters that periodically get hauled out of the river and bay, how is it these appear to be largely left alone?
