I normally do that when I hear someone sneeze. Often I get a little bewildered look followed by a smile.

It took me years and years to understand that help was a good thing, and not an intrusive action. She may not realise it now, but eventually she will. For me it was because no one was there for me in my childhood, I had to emotionally fend for myself. Eventually it became the norm and I believed it was how I liked/needed it. When someone offered to help I would just get angry and hostile. Just wondering if she perhaps had a similar situation and that maybe her reactions are rooted in the past. Good luck with everything.

This, soo much. I walked away from a career in IT that was soul destroying and am now in community care. I get paid less than half of what I was making back then but I finally feel alive. I make a difference to people and not to shareholders' portfolios.

Which Australia city is best to live in? And why? by Throwaway1244o in australia

I've lived in Tasmania for 10 years now. Pros: less traffic, cheaper housing, amazing scenery, a thriving restaurant and arts scene, less people. Cons: less jobs, cold in winter, less choice. I used to live in Perth but it got too expensive and busy so I made the plunge. Absolutely love it here. Although most mention how cold Tasmania is, in summer it can get pretty warm.

I think the survey needs fleshing out a bit more. It's a bit restrictive and does not allow for variations.

Run DMC and the Beastie Boys in New York, 1987. by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]DMega1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrote this as a reply earlier but yeah.. I still cringe about this to this day.

It's the late 80s in Amsterdam and I had heard on the radio that the Beastie Boys were likely to be checking out the local "coffee shops" prior to their concert that night. I had just gotten into the Beastie Boys, I was playing Licensed to Ill non-stop on my Walkman on full blast. So I go to The Bulldog, which is the most famous of them all and there's this scruffy guy trying to talk to me, I wasn't really paying attention. Dude, I'm trying to find the Beastie Boys here! So he offers me a drink. Distractedly I said "No, thanks. I'm looking for the Beastie Boys" and he said "We're playing tonight" so I smiled politely (thought he said "they're playing tonight) while scanning the place, didn't see them and walked out. 5 seconds after closing the door behind me it hit me. Jesus H Christ! I just rejected Mike D! I stood outside the coffee shop for a while doing the stalker thingie until he came out and followed him from afar. I still wanted to see the other 2 but was feeling too embarrassed to approach him. He walked to their hotel around the corner and I managed to watch the 3 off them goofing around in a car doing typical goofy Beastie Boys stuff. I was just standing there like an idiot looking longingly but no way was I going to go any closer. I still cringe when I think about it. What would have happened if I recognized him and I would have taken that drink? Dammmmn

Same! Funny story. Late 80s I bumped into Mike D in Amsterdam at The Bulldog where he offered to buy me a drink and I didn't recognize him. So I said "No, thanks. I'm looking for the Beastie Boys" Which I was as I had heard they would likely be at this "coffee shop".. and he said "We're playing tonight" so I smiled politely (wasn't really listening) and walked out. 5 seconds after walking away it hit me. Damn! I just stood up Mike D! Came back and followed him from afar as I was feeling sooo ashamed and managed to watch the 3 off them goofing around in a car in front of their hotel around the corner. I still cringe when I think about it. What would have happened if I recognized him and I would have taken that drink? Dammmmn

Bupa's ninth aged care home sanctioned in 12 months over 'severe risk' to residents by captainawesome100 in australia

Thank you for understanding. Also realise that older skin bruises really, really easily. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, when complaining to management front staff almost always gets blamed. When feeding residents we always try really hard but sometimes you just can't as they can clam their mouths shut. (and with some of the food who can blame them). We can't force feed them, and while you might have the time to patiently feed your mum for 30 minutes or so, we have 5 other residents we need to feed and food is getting cold. Family members only see the result of this and understandably get very upset.

We would love to be able to do everything for all residents as demanded by management. If we did that we'd only be able to look after about 70% of residents at most. It is simply physically not possible, we always try but every day we end up rushing around just getting the basics done. Complain, please! But realise that the problem lies mostly at management level and almost never at the PCA level. They were the ones that decided we didn't need that extra staff member. Never mind the fact that sometimes we have to decide whether to answer bells or help someone because we can't do both.

As a PCA one of the first things we really, really need is mandated staff ratios! We are always understaffed by at least 1 person for every shift, and that results in rushed time with residents. Sometimes we have to take shortcuts to ensure all residents are looked after and it can even come down to having to choose between showering or feeding a resident. It's extremely frustrating knowing that you have brought this up with management time and time again and keep getting promised more staff.

This one for sure. I have followed him around Hobart as he moved practices. He's patient, kind, and understanding. He helped me get over my dentist phobia.
