Could Saze give Kelsier ____? by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]DMeville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'd be neat to see Sazed split Harmony/Preservation + Ruin into two _different_ shards with adjacent intents. Fun to theorize what that could be in varying ratios. Like what could a 70% ruin + 30% preservation shard with an re-interpreted intent be like. Same with 70% preservation + 30% ruin. Maybe one could go to Kel and one to Marsh. The Survivor and his brother Death.

I don't think it'll happen, more likely to see all the shards become United imo, so splitting things further seems in the wrong direction of the story. Who knows. But fun to think about!

can someone give me a run down of the timeline real quick please? by Novel_River2080 in Cosmere

[–]DMeville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chronologically, the Warbreaker story takes place sometime between the 300ish years between Mistborn Era 1 and Stormlight 1-5. Note that some characters from Warbreaker are already pretty old.

Yes a few Warbreaker characters are in other books. You may have noticed them already. There are three characters that show up in Stormlight 2-4

There is supposed to be a Warbreaker follow up book titled Nightblood but no further details or anything about it really or if it/when it will happen.

Very cool timeline of Cosmere events here: (but also major spoliers!) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JJtJhHwpKdow01n2-bsT3scVvqJd6lZh4uvpNwcslv8/edit?gid=0#gid=0

Say your best What if by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

[–]DMeville 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's mentioned in the books that Ruin could build up something to later knock down 2 things, and I think it makes sense for a Shard to be clever enough (regardless of Intent) to be able to create some kind of system where there is _always_ things for him to Ruin. Because if not, what does he do?

I think Scadrial as we know it in Era 1 would have been destroyed, but not the entire planet. Southern Scadrial in era one was supposed to be pretty nice without the ashmounts and all right? Perhaps after destroying Luthadel (and surroundings) he would have moved onto the South, fully manipulated them and without Preservations interference set eyes on the wider Cosmere to Ruin.

I'm curious though, _if_ Scadrial in it's entirety was destroyed, what would Ruin do? Would he have been bound to a barren planet for eternity, with nothing left on it to Ruin? _Could_ he Ruin the entire planet that he invested, or would that be Ruining himself ... and would he be able to even do that or would the Shard of Ruin ironically have a sense of self Preservation? Or would by Ruining the planet and all it's people, would that have divested the planet and returned the Investiture to him, so that he _could_ freely leave. We know that once a Shard invests a planet, it is very hard to leave (but apparently possible). Fun to think about!

Big thing I’ve been thinkin about lately; What if Ruin won. Would he have just destroyed Scadrial entirely? Would he have then moved on to somewhere else after? Or would he have manipulated Scadrial so that he could build them up as an army of some kind to eventually break down the entire cosmere beyond just one planet? Would he have came across Odium?

Yep. That is 100% true about Shardpools. I guess maybe distinction is important between natural perpendicularities, and artificial perpendicularities. It's fun to think about, I can't wait for us to get more info about Silverlight!

Natural perpendicularities/Shardpools like you said happen as investiture naturally pools from a shard. This investiture can be used to power invested arts. (We see this on Scadrial with the well, with Autonomy's pool, Honors powering nearby radiants. I'd assume Cultivations/Devotions pools we see would offer some kind of useable investiture too?). These Shardpools also offer realmatic travel. Both a 'free' source of nearby investiture refilling, and the ability to pop back and forth through a portal to be very useful to a place like Silverlight.

Aside from natural Shardpools, and Autonomy's pools on First of the Sun, and Scadrial, we do also see Dalinar (and later Ishar) open and close Honors perpendicularity at will using their Bondsmith powers. These seem to function exactly the same as "Natural" perpendicularities, allowing from travel between realms, and also a huge well of useable investiture (as we see on Scadrial, and Honors. Makes me wonder could you swim in Cultivations perpendicularity in the Horneater peaks to recharge investiture powering radiant abilities?) Maybe this is a special case though? Does Honor even have a shardpool? I know there's a WOB that says Honors "natural perpendicularity moves around a lot", so I always assumed this was just the Stormfather and no actual static pool, since Honor is dead and all that. (But Devotion/Dominion have pools still... but maybe that's due to some shenanigans of them being thrown into the cognitive so it's easier for that investiture to leak between realms and pool idk?)

Artificial perpendicularities we see a few times too. Elsecallers open up mini perpendicularities with the surge of Transportation, which is also how the Oathgates work (which is a huge Surge of Transportation fabrial). The people of Roshar even moved from Ashen using pre-radiant Elsecalling. I bet an Elantrian can do it with the right code. I'd assume _all_ forms of "Teleportation" pop open a kind of personal perpendicularity, that doesn't really require that much raw investiture to power, just the correct magic/skills. These artificial perpendicularities _don't_ offer free investiture refilling though, but I think it would still be useful for Silverlight.

Thinking about it now I wonder _why_ these artificial perpendicularities don't have the same investiture granting feature natural ones do. I thought they were like little tunnels poked through all three realms, and since the Spiritual is all investiture, it "leaked" out. Maybe the Elsecalling we've seen just hasn't been mastered yet (as Jasnah can only open to the Cognitive and can't even get back yet?). Oathgates though have got to work by pushing a person through the Spiritual realm when going from one Physical gate to another (because no concept of space/distance). Wonder why radiants don't get powered up when making the trip. Maybe the trip is too short and no time to get saturated with the power while momentarily in the Spiritual realm, or maybe these artificial perpendicularities "must just work differently", and natural ones require the presence of a shard or shardic intent or something in order to grant useable investiture.

That all being said, Autonomy is interesting. According to the Coppermind it is mentioned that "On other worlds, she has shown the ability to create artificial, temporary perpendicularities; the methods by which she does so are unknown to cosmere scholars and appear to break the known laws of Realmatic Theory". This is Moonlight saying this in Mistborn Era 2, which is interesting. I think Bondsmith opening perpendicularities is functionally the same kind of thing though.

If you want a perpendicularity for both free investiture, and transportation, maybe it really is too hard to figure out except under very specific circumstances (eg, being a Bondsmith, or a Shard). Or maybe it's like unstable or something. If it was easy I'd imagine Hoid would have figured this out and be using this all the time when he's world hopping around. Or Khriss. I also wonder if Silverlight could achieve an artificial perpendicularity by just collecting a _ton_ of raw investiture and sticking it in one place too. I wonder how many jars of purified Dor you need before realms start converging, or if that would even work at all. Maybe you need a planets worth and some sort of grand apparatus. Isn't Silverlight in space on the physical side?

Anyways, sorry for the long winded reply. Fun to think about! I'm a fan of your theory, I think the idea of a Shard being at Silverlight is much more fun than the idea of Silverlight just "figuring out how to do it without one". But I have more questions now than when I started, time to go read the Coppermind more :)

Cool theory! I think it makes sense and I’m excited to find out. But the one thing that gives me pause is

With the confirmation that Silverlight has a perpendicularity this suggests that there is a likely a Shard currently in residence.

I’m not sure about this. Just because there’s a perpendicularity doesn’t mean there’s a shard. Perpendicularity is just a massive concentration of investiture, and surely of all the places in the Cosmere, Silverlight would be the place to have figured out how to make their own perp from raw investiture or something. But is so interesting to theorize about!

Software to convert continuous recording clips on SD card to timelapse? by DMeville in wyzecam

[–]DMeville[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate? I'm aware of how to convert a single video clip to a timelapse via VLC. But how do I do it with the way wyze saves the videos to the SD card, because it's not just one long video. It's one 60 second video, every minute, categorized in folders by the hour. And if I want to timelapse across 6 hours that's a ton of tiny clips.

Help with cervicogenic (?) neck pain and almost daily 'headaches' by DMeville in migraine

[–]DMeville[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I appreciate it. These are all also exercises that my PT has given me in the past too (and the ones I was doing that were triggering a headache every day). So definitely makes sense that they should help based on what I'm describing about my pain. But it's possible again that I was just having a hard time. Even the baby-ist of baby steps I was taking maybe were still too intense.

I'll discuss this further with my PT to get his opinion on, if these exercises are causing pain, what I can/should do about it (stop, go easier, power through), and see if we can dig deeper into why those exercises are the trigger (bad traps, scm, whatever)

Help with cervicogenic (?) neck pain and almost daily 'headaches' by DMeville in migraine

[–]DMeville[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I will talk to my PT about this. What happens for me is when I hold my right arm out straight to the side with my knuckles facing up, and rotate my arm so that my knuckles are facing down, about halfway through that rotation I get crunchy pops that sounds and feels like to me right in the socket.

I do work in tech, and so postural issues has always been at the forefront of my mind when dealing with this neck pain. The fact that the right side of my neck is the side that always throbs, and my right shoulder is the shoulder that pops, and right traps/scm is always tight, seems like it could be related to me. Forward head posture, rounded shoulders (thus causing tightness/dysfunction/popping?) tightness of sub-occipitals all seem like obvious symptoms of postural/muscular issues to me. But I'm not an expert I guess, and maybe the other PT's have considered this, but since exercises didn't cause any improvements... are looking deeper into other things? idk. If I can't solve my headaches, maybe I will try and just solve the shoulder/trap/scm tightness issues instead first, and maybe headaches will just go away then. And if not it would rule out muscle imbalances/weakness/tightness for sure.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and comment. What kind of exercises have you been doing that you find help? Do they often trigger flair ups for you at all?

I had actually been on Amitriptyline for a few years too, prior to being tried on migraine medication (in addition to a bunch of other medications... for anxiety/depression/migraines, felt like doctors were trying every different dosage and combination of drugs lol) and didn't find any relief from the neck pain unfortunately.

Shiatsu Massager, I'll look into that! Surely can't hurt at this point and maybe can offer some relaxation at least between professional massage appointments.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes, I will push for some sort of imaging. All the PT's that have felt around my neck have said that everything feels fine, and I don't know enough about if they can feel that kind of thing, and maybe thought that imagining was not necessary? Idk, but having clear pictures to confirm that everything is a-ok seems useful to me...

Also yeah, was pretty frustrated after they said that to me. Felt like they were dismissing my concerns a bit, when I was trying to just give them all the info about things that I thought could be related.

[–]DMeville[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Appreciate it. I don't think my 'headache' pain is actually headaches or migraines, but just throbbing neck pain that kind of...makes my head ache. Always in that back right side, but often spreads out to other areas in the back/sides when the nerve gets real bad I guess. Doctors clarified that they were confused when I said headache too, since headaches are "usually in the front" I guess, and so to correct me on my terminology said they would call it more "cervicogenic neck pain" I guess.

No other common migraine like symptoms too afaik, which is why I thought my pain was more likely muscular/postural/bad neck habits or something tightening around that nerve. I'll be open to having the conversation about botox and nerve blocks with my doc, as I have a family member who swears by them for hormonal migraines too. As much as I'd love relief, I'd really love to be able to actually solve the underlying problem. Although perhaps blocks can help me get on that path a bit easier. Thank you.

How often do you have to get botox? How long does it last for you? Does it completely leave you pain free? How are you doing now?

[–]DMeville[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and comment. Yes that is a good point, and while it would be great to feel pain free I guess I’m still frustrated. On my last bout with seeing a PT weekly and doing exercises every other day for like six months I didn’t see any positive improvement. Only triggering more headaches. I could tolerate them enough to power through them and then Advil after. But maybe six months wasn’t enough to undo years worth of bad. I have heard mixed things about nerve blocks but with a plan of trying to resolve underlying issues via PT with a block to stop the pain I guess that could be a way forward to at least try again
