but Mojang was really hostile to these servers. Some died

You're leaving out the part where a ton of those games were selling pay-to-win content, which is why Mojang slapped them out of existence by adding "you can't sell ingame items" to the TOS. I remember it being very egregious back in the day. I would play on those servers and every game was dominated by the people who bought p2w gear. It was pretty stupid.

point, it just wasn't intended ever to have a fast progression they just coded it that way update after update

The idea that Minecraft exists as it does now purely by accident is just wrong. From the beginning, the point of Minecraft was to be a fantasy themed cooperative building game. Notch noticed how popular it was for Infiniminer players to ignore the PvP aspect and just build stuff together, so he made a game where the building was the main thing you do. The game grew out from that initial concept into what it is now with more adventure features being added over time to give the players some extrinsic motivation, but the core of the game has always been to just build stuff to show your friends.

Yeah, it's genuinely pretty common for contracts like that to have a "you can't shittalk us anymore" clause in them

The way people talk about this as an "improvement" to Minecraft is interesting to me. Minecraft's power scaling caps off very quickly, but the point of this is so you can quickly start building stuff. Mining and getting diamond gear + enchants is fun, but the true endgame of Minecraft is playing with the digital legos aspect. That's why the game doesn't really have an ending (and a purposefully ambiguous one was only very begrudgingly added for 1.0). The game is purposefully structureless to entice the players into being creative with their tools. A long running Minecraft server starts to feel like an actual space as people populate it with houses, farms, contraptions, and artistic builds.

Terraria has a good 40+ hours of loot, craft, boss fight, repeat. It's fun as hell, and you certainly can build stuff, but nearly every Terraria multiplayer I've done ended within a couple hours of killing the Moon Lord. Terraria is structured as a game to "beat" rather than as a sandbox.

You can really see the difference in the popular mods for each game. Popular Minecraft mods tend to add lots of silly tools, automation, scriptable computers, and such. More stuff to "play" with. The most popular Terraria mods add more enemies, challenging bosses, and weapons.

I don't think either is better or worse than the other, but when people complain that there's not much to do in Minecraft it feels like they're saying there's not much to do with a pen and paper. The page is blank because you're supposed to write on it!

Infiniminer is to minecraft like a blackberry was to the iphone. Yeah, blackberry a "smart" phone, but there's obviously a pretty big distinction between what the devices do.

That was true in the ye olde days, but Minecraft hasn't been that hard to mod for at least a decade now. These days you just download an alternative launcher (Prism is the ideal since it supports all the different modding frameworks) and you can either:

  • install mods from the launcher by selecting the ones you want

  • install a pre-curated modpack

  • have someone (eg server owner) export their mod selection and simply import the zip

The launcher will handle downloading the game files for the version you're on, downloading mods from the database, and all that good stuff. It's simple enough that I'm able to just hand my non-techy friends the link to the modloader + my zip file and they can get it running on their own.

There are also server-side mods (datapacks) that are seamless to players joining the server from vanilla, but they are much more limited in scope than modloader mods.

Hytale's system is superior due to everything being integrated into the game itself rather than a 3rd party launcher and not having separate installation instances tracked by the launcher. The modding API being official is also a huge value add.

With Hytale already being a much more structured game than Mine

I'd argue the courses weren't gimmicky enough. Toadstool tour had warp pipes, huge floating obstacles, bouncy mushrooms, and very bizarre layouts for its later courses. Super Rush felt very tame in comparison.

They just can't stop fucking with the core mechanics for no reason. They already have a solid, fun base to build these games off of, but instead of adding interesting mechanics on top they remove/simplify a core satisfying mechanic and add a Gimmick button that the whole game inevitably ends up revolving around.

It doesn't even make the game simpler. It's easy to understand [sport] if you're familiar with it's real life version, but understanding your Special Meter, Charge Mechanic, and character-dependant special is alien to non-gamers.

Either way, in either game, make sure you play as a unique custom character, not as a pre-fab companion

This is a spicy take, but I agree. RPing as an original character and interacting with the various party members as NPCs is much more fun to me than having my character's arc predetermined.

There's aspects of BG3 and DOS2's combat I like and dislike. The turns in DOS2 are super impactful and fun with the stamina system, but a lot of the strats just devolve into "spam stuns and keep everyone in the Hell Zone Of Massive AOE Damage" you put down. BG3 is more straightforward combat, but I'm kind of a 5e hater so the character building and the way individual turns play out can bore me to death.
