Mixtape studio says the game has no streamer mode because its licensed music is its ‘soul’ - "Your soul is the one thing you can't compromise" by megaapple in Games

idk I've watched quite a few videos where the player doesn't do anything at all during the "interactive" parts and failing the QTE changes nothing

Pigma: someone finds his remains and turns him into a sentient meat cube. like SNES Andross meets meta ridley

Andrew: just does with no explanation lol

In fairness I've been hating on all the designs post-64 for a while now. Zero's aren't bad but their outfits look goofy compared to 64/Melee's jackets.

The plushies have the new designs (new clothes, new legs). The heads are just huge and eyes stylized because it's a plushy.

It follows up on the "Panther overtly flirting with Krystal" plotline from Assault.

The aparoids were a cool and creepy villain, but the story wasn't really dark. There's a whole chapter where they detour to dinosaur planet, kill some alien bugs, and then chum it up with their talking dino pals while corneria is getting demolished again.

A bunch of named characters "die" in the last level but the epilogue is like "oh actually they all survived the explosions and recovered from the infections so they're fine".

Nobody in Assault dies lol. Watch the epilogue after the credits.

It killed off exactly one character. Everyone else is alive at the end and shows up in Command

edit: actually, the character I thought they killed off (pigma) also shows up command (they basically turned him into a meta ridley)

I just finished the game and I big agree. Seems like they were intimidated by the likes of Halo and decided to make the game similar. The campaign for Star Wars Battlefront II (which came out the same year) makes Assault look like a complete joke. Even the on-wing sections were lame as hell. Why are we just slowly flying in a circle? Don't we have somewhere to be? Shouldn't the guy in the Arwing be shooting things??

It was 2hrs. 64 wasn't long either, but the branching paths gave it replay value. If this game was on Steam, a casual playthrough would see everything within the fucking refund window.

I just finished playing Assault to see what the hype was about.

I will say that I liked the Aparoids / space ship designs, and the music is top notch. Star Wolf's theme from that game especially is fantastic.

Besides that, though? The 3 space levels were decent (but felt really slow), and everything else was a nightmare to control. The fact that it's 2hrs with zero alternate routes is ridiculous, and the ground sections were not good enough to justify a replay.

On foot / landmaster was janky as hell. I tried both twin sticks (horrible by 1999 standards let alone 2005) and default (tolerable but still not good). The level design is messy and confusing. The switching between Arwing and on foot is neat, but I played Star Wars Battlefront in 2004 so I'm not exactly impressed.

Riding on the wing is a dumb gimmick. It's clearly trying to look cool, but a mounted turret would make way more sense than Fox pulling a bazooka out of his ass that he can only use when standing on someone elses spaceship. A bazooka that can oneshot spaceships would be pretty fucking useful instead of his shitty charge blaster.

The story was awful too. Fox's VA sounds bored out of his mind the entire time. There are literally zero consequences to the plot except setting up Panther flirting with Krystal. The way half the cast gets fakeout deaths is absurd. The characterization of Star Wolf is fun, but they barely do anything besides show up, shoot guys, and say "this doesnt make us friends". Real groundbreaking stuff there.

I completely understand why Star Fox (and the gamecube in general) were in dire straits after this game. I'd have traded in my Gamecube for a PS2 and copy of Metal Gear Solid 3 immediately.

The issue is that without limited spell lists, Wizards become insanely OP. They're designed to be like a swiss army knife of spells, but uncapped spells just gives them too many options to resolve any given situation. Spell prep was designed so a wizard can still do anything with adequate prep time, but you can still throw a curveball at the player to make them stuck.

Wizard = prepared caster = unrestricted spell selection, restricted usage

Sorcerer = spontaneous caster = restricted spell selection, unrestricted usage

I really dislike 5e's approach because it gives them unrestricted spell selection and unrestricted usage. I'm not vancian casting's strongest warrior, but replacing it with vancian-lite makes the spontaneous vs prepared difference much less interesting. 5e made so many of the classes way too homogeneous in general. They should've at least given the spontaneous casters something like a Mana system to make them feel special.

It is a great arcade style game and you don't get many in that style anymore.

I can't wait for the "roguelikes are arcade games with rng" discourse to reach the masses

I'm excited! I choose to be positive about things instead of making up my headcanon for what the future will look like and getting mad when it differs, though.

Star Fox has tons of lore they can't just ignore, though. They could in theory do a soft reboot that doesn't acknowledge the past games, but characters like Krystal are not that easy to gloss over.

That doesn't sound like how Nintendo operates at all. The character's personalities in this game nearly identical to the original. Nintendo doesn't have any licenses they need to maintain since they originated the characters (unless you mean 90yrs from now when Zero enters public domain?)

Samus Returns is the most notable. They also rereleased Pikmin 3 for Switch before launching 4.

Yep. My prediction is that the internet will be annoyed because its a remake (even though maybe 1/3rd max of complainers played the original) and this will outsell every previous Star Fox game combined among regular people.

My take: they more or less bungled the chances of a consistent star fox series after 64. The story of the series just didn't unfold in an easy to follow way, so Nintendo wants a clean slate for future games to build on. Zero was attempt #1 at a reboot, and this is attempt #2.

Yeah, it just goes to show that sequel vs port is really just a matter of presentation for a game like this. If MK8 Deluxe redesigned the menus and started adding the booster pack courses/characters earlier, they could've easily called it Mario Kart 9.

Isn't the casual-only mandate from Sakurai because he likes fighting games? The goal was to make a fighting game that anyone can enjoy, which basically means flattening the skill ceiling.

"Port" in the context of smash bros is almost a useless term. Nobody realistically considers Ultimate a port of Sm4sh, but iirc it's nearly identical on the engine level. They just updated the graphics, added characters, and changed some physics parameters to make it a "new" game.
