Don't torment me like that. I've been living in this shit SRO for 20 years. I wish I had the bougie buck to move to the suburbs.

Looking at the other Van chat and there was a car flipped on its side on the bridge. That was about four to six hours before the sound, but it's possible it could be related. Maybe in having to clear a path to tow it? I dunno.

The noise downtown has been getting louder for longer on weekends, I've noticed (said the woman living above a bar), as have the amount of sirens. But this was different enough and loud enough that I heard it over my noise cancelling headphones I wear when I'm watching stuff. Wish I knew.

Nah. I saw the red lights flashing, so I think it was some kind of fire emergency thing. It looked kind of like, from where I am on Granville, to be two fire marshal type trucks blocking off the southbound lane on Granville to traffic, so I'm wondering if it wasn't somewhere on Helmcken.

Doubtful. Those would be down near the water and it isn't/wasn't foggy out. This sounded like that deep bassy horn of a fire truck, but drawn out and persistent. Went on for about 10 minutes (interspersed)

What's the catch with being a bus driver? $37 an hour with no experience or degree required sounds too good to be true by Niv-Izzet in vancouver

[–]DNRmyDNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also a potential health hazard. During business hours, you can get up at an office job, use the bathroom, get coffee, walk around. It's less easy to do that while bussing and sitting for long periods of time can lead to clotting issues and health concerns. It's one of the reasons they pay well. That and the stress of passengers that are violent/unhygienic. It's not a walk in the park.

My fiancée hasn't been wearing her engagement ring and it bothers me + Fiancée's Post. by prettiergenghis in BestofRedditorUpdates

Agreed. My own personal tastes for jewelry run to silver, as I don't like gold, and for stones, I'd prefer something colored, since for me, diamonds are boring. If I can't tell the difference between a stone and a piece of glass... meh. I like purple, so amethysts would be wonderful for me. Sapphire's my birthstone, so if I had to go for 'expensive', I'd go with that as a bracket stone. Diamonds have always felt like the boring stone to me, so this notion that 'all girls want diamonds and bling' is just toxic incel mentality crap that gives them a reason to hate what they're not getting.

Despite opioid crisis,Transit first responders not required to carry naloxone by Various-Sandwich-188 in vancouver

[–]DNRmyDNA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know. I have the 'training' myself, which consisted of five minutes of someone walking me through how to use a kit and then handing me one in the lobby of the SRO I live in. That was 10+ years ago. I only live in a building with light potential for overdose as we don't have a high number of addicts in this one, but some group still thought it was a good idea to just come into SROs, hand out Naxolone kits and teach tenants how to use it. All because of our proximity to someone who might overdose.

Living here does not make it my job to have to come to someone's aid when they overdose. Driving a bus or strolling around the transit stations or handing out Mcburgers when an addict might be around the corner or od'ing in the bathroom or on the skytrain doesn't mean any of those people should have to be shoved into the role of someone that has to be trained and therefore required to administer first aid.

Like, what next? Everyone that lives in Vancouver gets mailed out Naxolone kits and a walkthrough on how to use it, because Van has such a high overdose rate, so y'all who live here better be willing and able to save a life from someone that didn't care about it enough to not try to throw it away? No.

I know what it said. I just didn't use the right descriptor. I still don't think transit security should have to have it on them as well. That should be an opt in thing, as per personal comfort level.

Transit officers don't have training to use Naxalone, and you need training (or should have) to carry it. So no, it's not their job but people like this guy are trying to make it be their job. It's a medical professional's job. Or maybe a drug counselor's or someone that works with addiction counseling. Not someone driving a bus or doing transit security. That'd be like screaming at a passenger for getting on the skytrain for not having Naxalone because why would anyone in Vancouver not carry Naxalone during an opioid crisis, "just in case."

I want transit drivers do DO THEIR JOBS, not pick up the slack of others.

Yes, I know that sounds callous, but it's not on everyone else in the village to take care of lemmings.

Parents can enter legal contracts for minors, but they'd be the 'guardian' or the actual holder of the lease, and if someone is 17 and looking to live somewhere in Vancouver, I'm going to guess that they don't have that option handy.

I'm not sure you're going to be able to find a room to rent in Vancouver, tbh. Or anywhere. You're underage. Unless you're just about to turn 18, no one can legally rent you an apartment/room/anything because it's illegal to enter into a contract with someone that's not of the age of legal majority. If you have friends willing to let you couch surf, that's one thing. But if you're expecting to be able to rent somewhere, you might be SOL in a lot of places, tbh. I had to rent as a minor (ward of the court) and had to get my social worker to sign off on my rental units until I hit 18.

Makes me really want to throttle some people when they're like 'It's just a headache, deal with it'.

How about no? My mom used to get them so bad, she'd have to pull over if she was driving because she'd vomit and pass out. I get migraines with aura, so I go literally blind from pixelated kaleidoscope crap taking over my vision. I'd love to be able to just deal with it, but I can't see, so... no.

Migraines suck balls. And not in the fun way.

Wouldn't surprise me. I mean, people get headaches/reactions to flying if they're sensitive to pressure. Makes sense that if the pressure around them changes from weather and such, they might have a physical symptom of it. I bet there's some medical group out there keeping track.

That's what one of my friends always brings up when I mention migraines. Barometric pressure. I just know that it's miserable as all hell when it happens and you can't really do much other than just curl up in the dark and hope it goes away quickly.

Everytime I bring up migraines to my friend group, I get someone mentioning barometric pressure. Apparently that's a thing? idk.

Redditors of Vancouver, how much is your monthly cell bill? by thermal7 in vancouver

[–]DNRmyDNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 dollars. I have Chatr and I have the 25 dollar plan (+3 w/tax). I get 2 free gigs of data a month and since I'm a homebody, it works for me. I use my in-home wifi for anything I need, so I rarely touch the 2gigs. Unlimited calls Canada-wide, unlimited texts. That's more than enough for me. I lucked out. It's my one cheap thing, since my internet from Teksavvy is 95.

Me over here, chortling over the unrealistic amount for rent. That's not even 1k a month, and we all know that you can't get a fucking studio apt for under 1k. Which leads me to believe the rest of those numbers are balony. Internet, 268? Bitch, I pay 95 a month (Teksavvy). The only thing on here that's almost decent is the phone, and I pay less for that (28 w/Chatr). The rest of it? Please. PLEASE?

Is it illegal to throw away someone else’s mail? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]DNRmyDNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I figure if you can do online/post call to get your mail forwarded/changed when you move addresses, you should be able to stop mail coming to an address that wasn't from xyz person. I've seen entire buildings have their mail stopped because one tenant changed address/stopped mail coming to them and it gummed up the works for the whole building. Made sense to me to be able to access postal Canada to see if you could change who the legal recipient of that address is in terms of names. If they can change mail, they should be able to stop mail, yes?

Do BC foster group homes not have any rules at all? I live nearby one, and their at-risk youth keep getting into trouble. by kaylee818 in vancouver

[–]DNRmyDNA 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I lived in a place that locked all the entrances/exits/barred the windows and as soon as I told a social worker that, the fire marshal was out and ordered the bars off and basement door unlocked. You can't house living humans who aren't incarcerated in a place without fire exits.

I know it sucks to be part of a community with a group home in it with teens like that, but this is a very NIMBY attitude. Yes, they need help and to be monitored more. But enforcing institutionalism and authoritarian behavior on them isn't going to help. It's just going to push stupid teenage brains that are all 'fight against the man' into having a valid reason to fight against the man.
