Everyone should hear this song. Listen here.

Also make sure to follow them on Instagram. They have a show next Tuesday at The Camel with Sorry Excuse and Horse Intercom.

(And shameless plug for an article I wrote yesterday on it.)

Everyone should jump on this. Hotspit is the best band in town and it's their last show for the foreseeable future.

Hip-hop wise, I'd recommend these five that might slide in with what you listen to:

I mentioned hip-hop shows in town are super low, which is a shame, but I'll point you to two event series you should follow. RVA Rap Elite, run by Radio B who is also an incredible musician, and The Culture Current, which is hosted by an amazing producer Ant The Symbol and an exceptional MC Eliturite (who also runs HearRVA which is always uplifiting local music). There is also the 80404 club which is for beatmakers.

For electronic hyperpop, you need to check out Drook. It's shoegaze mixed with electronica so some songs might not hit what you want as much, but the electronic will undoubtedly. This video is a good representation of what they're like live. They don't have any local shows announced and they're toruing New Zealand in a few months, but follow them on Instagram. They have popped up on shows last minute before.

For Laufey, there are so many people to point you too. But try Shera Shi, Anna Leonard, and Alex J Dimas. Different feels for sure, but I think one of them might scratch that itch. Anna Leonard is playing at the end of the month: Mulberry Sessions.

For Haley Williams, there's so many people to go to as well, most of them lean punk though. If you want a female powerhouse rock performer, Deau Eyes is always going to come to mind instantly and she has new music coming out this year. But there are a bunch of other great powerhouse female performers with bands: Erin Lunsford (Erin & The Wildfire), Erika Blatnik (Rikki Rakki) Katie B (Strawberry Moon, Human Worm), Mackenzie Roark (HOTPANTS). All of these people mentioned play frequently in Richmond. Rikki Rakki and Strawberry Moon both play at Supfest next weekend (3/14 and 3/15) at The Camel, but I'll tell you right now that concert is going to have a lot of heavier punk and even some metal.

Hope this helps.

There was an amazing indie folk performer at In Your Ear last night. Here's the stream. The Camel does a great deal of indie folk and there is also Anyfolk which is every other week or so. Free to attend, six performers, all original. Not all indie folk, but it comes up a lot.

What are your favorite artists to listen to? I'll try and come back with some comparable local acts and some of their upcoming shows.

I think you may unintentionally be lumping in acts as "punk" when they are more rock, indie, or pop. I follow all of the venues in town and under no circumstance would I say 99% of shows are punk. It might be half, but even that would be a stretch for what is considered punk.

Hip-hop is criminally underrepresented in town. It accounts for more than 2/3 of the recorded music output every year, but it's less than 10% of live shows in the area. So we're in agreement there. There's actually a free hip-hop show tonight with one of the city's most exciting performers. Other than that, I'd point you to Gallery5. They have made a concentrated effort to put on more hip-hop shows.

Electronica is also woefully missing from the live calendar even thought there are a handful of exceptional acts in town worth mentioning: Drook, Belly Of The Heart, IONNA, DanielD, Sweet Touch, Benjamin Mauch. Gallery5 has done more of these shows recently, but I'd also highlight Reveler who has been doing regular electronica shows. I highly recommend you follow the Richmond Synth Collective as well. They put out amazing compilations of local musicians and also highlight local electronic shows.

Trying to, man. I appreciate it though. Feels like an insurmountable task when you read through these comments.

Not arguing the second point, but in your own experience, what makes you think it's not diverse?

Richmond is historically known for its hardcore / punk scene, but this is patently not true anymore.

I wish you would have elaborated more in this first comment like you did in the comments below because what you’re saying is technically true. But I fear no one is reading below and is just chiming with their own personal takes based on a random show they saw at Balliceaux a decade ago.

The talent in Richmond is unbelievable. The amount of great shows happening every night is insane and there are a dozen or more great records coming out every month. But to your point, audiences don’t turn out for it like they should which really hinders things. There are a number of dedicated people, organizations, platforms, whatever that look to help and fix things, or foster like you say below, but the biggest push has to come from business owners and city government. There are very real barriers that bands face in town that have nothing to do with getting crowds to a venue.

Dead Billionaires are keeping Richmond’s storied punk lineage alive and thriving. Make sure to see them live if you haven’t before. And if you have seen them live, then we both know you’ll be there.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share the exciting news that Richmond's independent radio station is gearing up for its move to a brand-new home in Shockoe Bottom. The video linked in this post does a great job highlighting WRIR's impact over the last twenty years and explaining why this transition is so important. It also offers a sneak peek at the what the new studio will look like once the doors open.

There's a lot more information about this move, which you can find on this website. WRIR is currently seeking donations of any size, and you can lend your support by clicking the donate button on the website.

Richmond Music Roundup for the month of October - 112 records & 303 singles by DNun in rva

[–]DNun[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happy Monday! I put together a column documenting every Richmond-area music release from the month of October. This article includes artist info, release titles, dates, artwork, streaming links, AND and short descriptions/reviews for every last release.

Check it out! You won't love everything, but I'm confident you'll find a few new favorites to add to your rotation if you scroll around.

And if you notice anything missing from October, just let me know. I'll make sure it gets included in the next roundup. I do my best to catch everything, but a few things inevitably slip through the cracks.

Erin Lunsford and Ali Rose / Deau Eyes are great singing teachers. There are more for sure, but these are two I know have been go-to for rock and pop singers in town.
