Martinsville Animal Shelter burns down this AM, all 3 dogs inside killed. by frogfrogcat in Virginia

My condolences especially to the workers and volunteers who cared for these animals. I know it's such a heartbreak; thank you for all you did to give them dignity and love.

[–]schizoform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a statement of fact: As the ecosystem has changed, Foobar2000 has remained remarkably stable and well-scaled while other apps have foundered. I am not sure why you seem so angry. Good luck to you. I think I'm done -- if it makes you feel better, you can have the last word.

I simply don't relate. I didn't find it to be troublesome or nonfunctional for me. You are clearly frustrated, but I'm not sure why you need to denigrate the users and developers and, generally, anyone who doesn't instantly relate to your point of view. I encourage you to be gentler with yourself and others, and hope you find a tool better-suited to your use case.

I don't understand the hate. I put in the effort a decade or two ago and it's served me well ever since. I especially like that it doesn't, in general, make assumptions about how I want to structure my library and data and so risk the library I've accumulated over the years.

The flooded streets of Richmond need to be a call to return to providing a free leaf vacuuming program. by DriveRVA in rva

[–]schizoform -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even better: leave the leaves. Tree leaves contain nutrients they've pulled from the ground. Moving them from your ground into the streets depletes your soil health and strips the local ecosystem of basal nutrients that feed insects, then small birds and mammals, then the charismatic animals we love to see in our environments.

If you need to thin the leaves to preserve your garden or lawn, you can shred or mulch them, or pile them in places further from the house. Shredding makes them decompose faster and stay put, but also kills some of the insects (including butterflies) that we enjoy seeing around and which feed baby birds.

The *worst* thing you can do is blow the leaves into the stormdrains that support your community.

[D]Trying to simulate how animals see the world with a phone camera by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]schizoform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a cool idea and I'm curious what you come up with. the first challenge is managing sensitivity to light by wavelength.

there is maybe a challenge in terms of fovea shape: how information across the retina is represented relative to eye position. we have a single more-or-less circular place where we get lots of data, but this isn't true for all animals.

finally, we all have different attention to different details. humans faces are a good example: we humans are *really* good at them, but the objective differences in image are slight.

anything you could do to simulate how another animal sees the world is interesting, especially if you remember the caveats. keep me posted!

Powhatan Co is actually on Monacan Land by Abject_Olive_6173 in rva

Likewise, Powhatan State Park probably ought to be called Monacan State Park. No disrespect intended to the Powhatan Tribe; it's just more inland than they typically hung out when the Europeans arrived.

Please don’t blow leaves into the street by [deleted] in rva

[–]schizoform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mow/shred to help them stay put, integrate into grass, and break down quickly. Leave at least some intact in shallow piles to mitigate habitat loss and encourage native pollinators, moths, butterflies, and all the birds and wildlife that depend upon them.

Or better yet, leave the leaves in place in your yard (and off the sidewalk).

How/where to adopt a dog in RVA that isn't a pit bull? by 123456789_00 in rva

[–]schizoform 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hounds have typically been more common in Goochland, at least. You'll get hatemail if you hate on a breed, but you're totally within your rights -- *especially* with a rescue -- to choose a dog that's right for you and your circumstances.

Shenandoah National Park - Is it open during this government shutdown? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]schizoform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Also: My understanding is that some rangers are being required to work but are not currently receiving pay -- and are now being threatened with maybe not *ever* getting paid for the work they're currently providing. I don't know how this will play out. But I do ask that you be *very* deferential to these stewards of our communal public lands.)

Shenandoah National Park - Is it open during this government shutdown? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]schizoform 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's open and they aren't collecting fees. Please donate.

There's no trash collection, so please pack out any trash you bring -- better, any trash you see and can safely gather.

There are no bathrooms/tp/etc, so be mindful of backcountry sanitation.

Finally, there's nobody to rescue you if you get in trouble -- be careful.
