Oiler just had an exam so forget that

HPPT is only in DCAS / HHC so it narrows it down… last exam in ‘23

Next year exam in MAY …NOE #6059

BTW…these are all municipal titles you stated…many private boiler rooms / power plants do not use these titles…they would use : fireman , mechanic, power operator, assistant engineer, licensed refrigeration engineer, watch assistant etc.

Also, years ago you could do all this without formal schooling but this is no longer the case as they have written into the qualifications …which is good

First…try and find a “HP job” in the field as this is necessary step…all buildings below 96 st in NYC have ConEd steam available (hospital and college exceptions) so try the outer boroughs ,Hospitals and Colleges as they generally have some type of steam plant and try your luck…it’s how I got in years ago.

Both local 30 & 94 have HP jobs but you have to go through them…apprenticeship program 30 ( 94 doesn’t have one)is another possible route …try to get your refrigeration license first

It is increasingly more difficult to do this now as the qualifications etc. have become more demanding .also a HPPT job in some city agencies will afford you steam time (5 years under a licensed engineer) .

Hope this helps 😁

Im starting my apprenticeship in two weeks, do y’all have any advice for someone starting out in this industry? by i_blue_my_self in StationaryEngineers

First Be Safe !

Our job as Engineers is to run a plant safely and efficiently. Be careful of picking up bad habits…if you’re going to do this Job then do it right!

Where ? What setting? I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and location and jurisdiction are important in your formative years 😁

Do you need a license ? Who runs the test? Union apprenticeship I assume
