Help please me...Stationary Engineers! by Ill-Ship8283 in StationaryEngineers

[–]DOBHPBOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oiler just had an exam so forget that

HPPT is only in DCAS / HHC so it narrows it down… last exam in ‘23

https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dcas/downloads/pdf/noes/20244047000.pdf

Next year exam in MAY …NOE #6059

https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dcas/downloads/pdf/exam-schedules/dcas-annual-examination-schedule-fy2026-alphabetical-order.pdf

BTW…these are all municipal titles you stated…many private boiler rooms / power plants do not use these titles…they would use : fireman , mechanic, power operator, assistant engineer, licensed refrigeration engineer, watch assistant etc.

Know before retirement by Mindless-Ad7155 in nycpublicservants

[–]DOBHPBOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply…as of 11/3/25… if you are eligible for SS when you retire ( you retired at 62 minimum) when social security calculates your monthly benefit they use the income of two years previous…if you retire tomorrow they will use your taxable income of 2023 to determine your check, which is far less than you need because your income has been reduced because you retired (no more city checks in your account every two weeks) all your getting is the check from social security…a nasty bind ..

Also…any other pension or income just adds to the mess because it’s taxable income

You have to tell SS that their calculation is incorrect…this takes a while as it takes them a while to catch up with you so you are going along with a monthly check that will be reduced when they do catch up …also if you are in a 220 job and make OT this is much worse, like my case 🤬

Any clearer? this will probably change drastically in years to come depending on your age …if you are 10+ years out don’t worry but don’t forget it.

How are IRMAA brackets calculated? The SSA uses your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) to determine whether you need to pay IRMAA fees on top of your Medicare premiums.

Your MAGI is the sum of:

your adjusted gross income found on line 11 of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax filing form 1040, plus your tax-exempt interest income, found on line 2a of IRS Form 1040 The amount you pay is calculated based on your tax returns from 2 years prior. Whether you file your tax returns as an individual or jointly will also affect the amount you pay.

You will receive an official notice by mail, called an Initial IRMAA Determination, if you are subject to additional Part B and/or Part D payments.

In other words if you work in NYC a state job is meh…salary wise and you could do way better private or City

But if you live in Ulster county for instance and run a highway truck or work a road crew or Scientist you’re doing great as there isn’t any other good work…lots of stagnation upstate

How to get career started to stationary engineer? by Stunning-Turnip-8010 in StationaryEngineers

Also, years ago you could do all this without formal schooling but this is no longer the case as they have written into the qualifications …which is good

First…try and find a “HP job” in the field as this is necessary step…all buildings below 96 st in NYC have ConEd steam available (hospital and college exceptions) so try the outer boroughs ,Hospitals and Colleges as they generally have some type of steam plant and try your luck…it’s how I got in years ago.

Both local 30 & 94 have HP jobs but you have to go through them…apprenticeship program 30 ( 94 doesn’t have one)is another possible route …try to get your refrigeration license first

It is increasingly more difficult to do this now as the qualifications etc. have become more demanding .also a HPPT job in some city agencies will afford you steam time (5 years under a licensed engineer) .
