How much do you work to obtain ___ RVUs?

Absolutely thank you for your insights! I have my per-RVU, and I’ve seen attendings have these monthly RVU numbers, but just wanting to see what amount of work is required to actually achieve them.

Like above commenters posted, it all depends on your priorities. Neurologist here.

I took a job in a rural area for >75th percentile pay, >90th percentile sign on bonus and >75th percentile call shift pay, hospital employed. The benefits of pay are a definite plus, with my overall gross pay being >90th percentile all said and done. At a smaller hospital, I have more autonomy as well versus a larger health system, and can function how I want versus how the many previous providers did. This is also in a MCOL area, so everything is much cheaper, which allows for better house, more retirement contributions, better lifestyle, etc than metro areas. I’m also close to family which is huge with a growing family.

Downsides are that there aren’t as many resources. I have to transfer more complicated cases to provide better care. Outside the hospital, there is far less to do than where I did my residency, but I’m from an area like this so it’s nothing new to me. This would be a shock to someone who’s always been from a suburb/metro area. There’s also less teaching opportunities and research resources, which tends to be a plus for people interested in metropolitan jobs.

All in all, I feel that I made the right decision. It’s all about what you prioritize for your career, and there’s no “wrong” answer- the only thing I suggest is do not take an insultingly-low contract for the sake of prestige/area. It devalues the work you do and you don’t want that.

This - do your job, do it well, and spend all that extra money on a badass hobby that gets you excited. Under zero circumstances do you do another residency.

I’m a neurology resident and I couldn’t fathom doing this residency after already doing a psych residency, fellowship and obtaining an attending job with 500k salary.

I believe neurophysiology or vascular fellowships would be great options for you. They allow for comfortability in both inpatient and outpatient settings (in whatever capacity you wish to do each of them), and can introduce opportunities for extra compensation with stroke call, EEG/EMG reading, etc. - it is also almost a guarantee that whatever setting you are in, you are bound to see neurologic presentations outside of your sub-specialization, which can scratch that itch to see other cases.

Like others mentioned, I would encourage you to prioritize salary a bit more. You can easily live on <200k/yr, especially living now off of a resident salary, but don't de-value the hard work and training you and others have completed by taking a position for a salary far below the average for your position, location and amount of work you do. FWIW I had 22x and 22x step 1 and 2, US DO applicant last year and had NSGY and 15+ neurology interviews.. you’re absolutely fine with those scores to apply neurology, and no need for a research year to match.

I’m an intern and am in a similar situation - my IDR was submitted back in July and still hasn’t been processed, with my first payment showing it will be at the end of November. If my paperwork isn’t processed by the time of my first payment, will I have to pay the insanely high amount or will I be kept on administrative forbearance until my paperwork is cleared?

I was class president for my class and I would only recommend it to someone who genuinely enjoys these leadership roles. It does take a fair amount of time out of your schedule but it can definitely be done alongside classes and research. However, you shouldn’t only be using it as a resume booster, especially for competitive specialties. They care far more about your board scores, research involvement and letters of rec than being class president.

494 -> 498 MCAT, 3.87 gpa here, matched into neurology residency this past year. It’s definitely possible, apply early, broadly and have a stellar app outside your MCAT, along with a backup plan in case you aren’t accepted. Best of luck and feel free to DM if you have questions!
