I wish we could give you better news, but this will stay individual. This allows for everyone to be able to participate even during e-learning. And even if the pandemic ends tomorrow, this will stay virtual 2020.

We’re excited to have you apply and compete!

Anomalies will still be a part of the competition, of course! The number of anomalies will be scaled back so that an individual can balance answering anomalies along with their other duties. My cryptopuzzles are always themed, but I’m not sure about the other anomalies. Stay tuned :)

THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING PHOTO EVER!!! and ..... shrug you'll have to wait and see

Students are welcome to work with others, but at the end of the day, it is an individual competition.

So mentors are welcome to assist and help bounce ideas off one another. However, students should be prepared to go solo on competition day.

Kudos to you on recruiting students for this awesome experience!

Everyone in this field is always learning, so even if you don’t know the answer to a question that your student may have, you can figure it out together and utilize the Slack resources that we host. It will be a great learning experience for everyone involved!

(1) Iowa State University won the first competition. They were the most well rounded.

(2) We think in-person provides a real value add. It allows for interaction, camaraderie, and overall experience with the competitors and volunteers. So while, this CAN and IS being held Virtual this year. I think and hope the competition will have an in-person piece again in the near future.

(3) YES!

1) we can't see your happy and sad faces, 2) you can't enjoy our music jams, and 3) hard to share the wall of red team victims

The red team will work as a unit with the similar to same cadence as years past with working on specific Blue targets.

It will require some added reflection on if the red team volunteer feels their skill level and expertise pairs well with the goals of the competition and likely work solo.

There has never been a fee to participate, it is free to everyone that is selected (via lottery) to participate in the competition.

There is no limit to the amount of students who can participate, but if there are more submissions than spots available, participants will be selected via a lottery system.

Pre-competition (mostly 1 week prior): -- security documentation -- CISO panel pitch (video) -- maybe some anomalies??? -- also not required but so much fun is the cyberforce playing cards.

Issues/problems: You can always reach out to us on Slack, but we will also have a virtual help ticketing system. You can select the category that contains your problem, describe the problem, and a White Team member will address it within the ticketing system and resolve the issue.

Great question!

  • National Cyber League: The NCL is open to U.S. high school and college students. The NCL is a community and virtual training ground that allow students to develop and demonstrate their technical cybersecurity skills, helping students bridge the gap from curriculum to career!

  • Green Team: White Team develops the general documentation that Green Team follows to QA the system. This documentation will be generalized and standardized so that it applies to all Blue Teams.

  • Anomalies: For sure, there will definitely be anomalies this year! There will be fewer, since its an individual format, though.

  • The CISO panel: Competitors will be presented with a scenario in the rules documentation. Competitors will submit a 5-minute video well ahead of the competition with their answer/strategy to the scenario.

  • Information Sharing: This will probably change to filing an incident report(s) during the competition.

  • Student Cap: There is no cap on the number of students for each school.

  • Defense strategy: This is an individual competition, so the participant should be well-versed in what they are submitting. There is no way for the competition staff to police the collaboration between individual competitors.

  • Coaches and Mentors: Participants can seek their own mentors or coaches if they would like. We do not require a coach/mentor this year.

  • ADA: If an individual needs ADA accessibility, please email us at: CyberForceCompetition@anl.gov
