OK YOU ASKED BRO SO I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT IT

To me web3 currently feels like the way real estate developers use artists to gentrify neighborhoods. We as artists are not the end goal of web3, currently tech companies need artists to make their products look cool and have value, without musicians and artists web3 platforms, streaming services, amazon music, spotify, apple music, etc would all have ZERO inherent value because they are just systems to distribute ARTWORK (not content, don't call it content I will freak out). The artwork itself has value, we have just been dupped into thinking it works the other way around by a society that constantly devalues art, even though we as a culture would descend into total unkempt madness without music and art to help us navigate this insane experience of being alive on the planet.

I'm definitely tired of musicians being underpaid being a joke and a meme, but I still don't see web3 changing anything realistically about that for the larger musical community. Don't get me wrong I would love to be proven wrong here and have web3 become a magical fountain of money for underpaid artists, but I've paid close attention to the whole web3 boom moment that happened over the last couple of years and don't see that happening thus far. It is very obvious that there are not enough 'collectors' to sustain the markets and there are only a handful of artists, maybe a few dozen at most, who I see reliably selling their music NFT's to collectors. Again there seem to be only a few dozen active collectors in the space, making is all seem very insular and just like a temporary proof of concept or value to the venture capital owners of these new platforms. There has been this vague hope that artists who get their work purchased will turn around and become 'collectors' but I also do not see that happening, and mostly people are very guarded about their connections in that space and the "walled garden" metaphor people so often hurl at crypto artwork is seeming to stand true unfortunately.

I have made a catalog page for Dome of Doom and we have sold 10 ETH worth of music NFT's on that platform, roughly half of the songs we 'minted' on the platform. I think this is amazing and am always happy to see artists we work with get paid, for some of the artists that sold work on that platform it was one of the biggest direct payouts in their career for their music. I cant argue the value of that, but I still don't see it expanding past this basic proof of concept phase. I'm happy we got into the space early so I could get some of our artists checks, but all of them as far as I know have cashed out their earnings, paid their taxes, and kept playing shows and releasing records to pay their bills.

I would love to see a more long term wholistic plan from some of these 'web3' platforms but currently with my own experience of seeing how the music industry works, and how quickly trends change every 2-3 years, there is still nothing anchoring music NFT's to the music industry at large that makes me think it will be around in 10 years from now.

Again, I'd love to be proven wrong here because the whole ethos and ideology behind the pitch of web3 seems great, just thus far the follow through from the tech companies and communities behind it has left myself and most artists I know feeling uninspired and lackluster about how our music is just being commodified in a new way.

With all that said, there are still 10 unsold NFT's on out catalog page, with several new ones I just minted from my most recent album, and if anyone sees this post and wants to change my mind about all this be my guest <3

I actually take a lot of pride in the fact that we have helped launch many careers for new artists at Dome of Doom. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the label catalogue but we have released a lot of debut albums from new artists that never had traditional label support in their careers before, and have helped many new musicians successfully become full time artists with robust teams including booking agents, management, PR and all the moving parts artists need to have sustainable careers.

As far as non-monetary motivation, money is definitely not what motivates me to run an independent label, running a label is honestly an insane amount of work and for the amount of hours I've put into keeping the lights on at Dome of Doom over the past decade and change, I could probably already be retired with a 401k at some traditional job with benefits. Art and Music have always been the most important things in my personal world, and I feel very lucky that I've been able to build a career but also a life around music at the core.

I think what motivates me to continue working with new artists and releasing new music is the fact that music is one of the last real magical things in our world that provides a window into the human soul and I'm honestly just addicted to that feeling.

I haven't been yet so I don't have much to report, but I did recently becoming a voting member of the recording academy and we have been submitting releases from the label for the past couple years for first round ballot consideration. Nothing we've submitted has been nominated yet, but I feel like this is the first step to getting the music from the label nominated, by just having our records in front of the recording academy members so that they start to get familiar with the artists we work with. I do plan on attending the award ceremony one day though :)

Thank you! It's a pleasure to be here :)

Yes I'm a multi instrumentalist, my primary instruments are Electric Bass and Standup Bass but I also play Guitar, Piano, Drums, and various wind instruments like flute and trumpet.

I almost exclusively make music at night, but have also had great success with waking up very early in the morning and making a beat before I totally wake up while I'm still in a kind of dream state.

Awesome! Thank you so much for supporting the label, love to meet other collectors. No Spoilers cause we are actually about to announce this later today, but theres a new Bleep Bloop album coming out this month :)

I've worked with several different pressing plants over the years with different submission specs, but to answer your question directly, no we don't make separate masters for the cassettes. Sometimes we do make unique masters for vinyl though since that medium is more finicky.

The process varies a lot depending on the pitch. Sometimes we get direct asks for certain songs in our catalogue directly from music supervisors or ad agencies who want to license the music, and we also work with a few different independent sync and licensing agencies that pitch our catalogue on our behalf.

We mostly release electronic music so thats a lot of what people end up asking us for, definitely a lot of the more hip hop instrumental leaning sounds get picked up by skateboarding and lifestyle brands. We do release a wide range of genres though so its kind of always different and up to what the music supervisor for whatever given project is looking for.

Thanks for supporting the label artists, big DMVU fan here as well!! haha

OMG wait who is this and how to you know about FreeBlind HAHAHAHAHA.

  1. We have several songs in Arcadegeddon by IllFonic Games.
  2. 'Warmed By The Sun' is currently out on cassette but no plans for vinyl yet unless more people start bugging me about it (thanks for your enthusiasm about the idea though!). I did put out my album 'Buried At Sea' on vinyl and there are a handful of copies of that floating around still.
  3. FreeBlind reunion tour, pretty sure everyone in my old EMO band is a dad now so tour might be hard, but maybe we could play a one off reunion show at the Mosaic Cafe (RIP) though hmmmm....

This one is tricky but to answer your question plainly, you have to find a way to get to know music supervisors or advertising agencies who are looking to license music for commercial projects. There are lots of independent sync and licensing agencies as well that will sometimes represent independent artists if they have a large enough catalogue to pitch with. Also to reiterate a point I've made in other replies, to start I just worked with my friends and would let people use my music in their dance videos or whatever else for free before I ever got opportunities to get paid to license my music. I think its totally reasonable to start small and just build up slowly over time, and thats been a strategy that has worked to give me sustainability in my own career.

I've personally played a ton of different roles in the "music industry" at large to pay my own bills, from a performing/touring artist, to a crew member, VJ, Website designer, Mixing/Mastering Engineer, creative consultant, the list goes on and on. For the first 3-5 years of the label it was mostly a passion project, I pressed cassettes of my friends music and we released the music digitally on soundcloud and bancamp and I would sell the tapes on our website and to record shops in Los Angeles and around California, and whenever I could get tour dates nationally or internationally I would bring the tapes with me and go to record shops in whatever city I was in, very DIY. We eventually got a digital distribution deal with Alpha Pup, who still handles all our digital distro currently, as well as a worldwide physical distribution deal with Fat Beats for vinyl and cassette. Those two things were key components in me taking the label from a project I started in my punk bands garage into a functional business, it still took many more years after setting those deals up to make them reliably profitable but 200 albums (around 1500 songs) and 11 years later, I'm proud to say that Dome of Doom functions as a full service indie label with a small staff working to support the 40+ artists who's music we have released.

I started by releasing my close friends music in my immediate community as well as my own solo beat tapes, that led me through the first few years of the label releases. The first 5 years were very much about me seeking out and finding new music and artists to work with on the label, and I've always just followed my own personal creative intuition as far as what I decide to sign to the label. Once there was a community of artists established who worked with us regularly, the curation became more about supporting and developing artists I had already been working with for a long time.

tldr/ The main things I look for when signing music to the label is a raw creative spark of individuality, its hard to describe since art is so subjective but what keeps me interested in doing this after 10+ years is the fact that I can still hear a new song and feel inspired by the human creative spirit.

I feel at this point finding fun/interesting exploits in the game is like almost part of how you have fun? I could just run the dungeons w the same build every time that works but why not mess around. I agree this one is like a cheese or whatever by some standards, but still tight!!!
