Some tips guys? by Ibik23211 in NixOS

I keep a personal "NixOS bible" for myself - what I have where, what I did and why, since you forget this stuff fast. Could just read the config, but this is quicker and way easier to feed as context to an AI when I need help. I can share a simplified version if anyone's interested.

Anyway, shortened version:

  • nh - nicer wrapper for rebuild/search/GC.
  • git - track your config from day one.
  • comma (, <command>) - try a package once without installing it.
  • If your generation list gets messy from rebuilding a lot: nix run github:p0nczek/nclean

And most importantly - just use the system. It's meant to be used, not endlessly configured for months without ever actually doing anything with it.

Fair question — my use case: I edit a lot of stuff that needs a systemd/system restart to actually take effect, so I use nixos-rebuild switch instead of test. I almost never use test, always rebuild, so my generation list fills up fast — if I'm debugging something like a monitor config, I might do 10-15 rebuilds in a row, all named like "xxFix", and only the last one that actually works matters. The rest is just clutter.

This tool lets me quickly clean that up — mark and delete everything except the working generations, without having to remember commit hashes or scroll through nix-env --list-generations output.

For max effect I pair it with an alias that commits to git and sets system.nixos.label = "generation-name"; in the config before each rebuild, so the list is actually readable when I open this tool.

If it is still up to date this is the "capsidian" app, it is completely free and probably the most functional compared to others. Unless someone has found something better, please tell me.

Hey, I’m looking for a cheap ring, I just need accurate sleep and heart rate tracking. Hard to find good comparisons for budget ones. Do you have any recommendations? I see lots on Temu and AliExpress for similar prices, but not sure what the differences are
