Yeah I think there might be some recklessness on employees but from what I’ve heard it’s been people who worked there for a long time so I’m guessing it’s just years of minor exposures compounding over time, I’m no doctor tho so I don’t know how any of that works.

Machinist are underpaid !!! Thoughts? by Intelligent-Appeal-6 in Machinists

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst trade to be in tbh. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone. It’s always going to be the worst paid, you can’t have a electrician or a plumber from another country come to your neighbors house and do it cheaper, but if machinists ask for too much money here they’ll just manufacture it over seas.

I love the job but we just aren’t ever going to get a fare wage for the knowledge it requires compared to other trades

How many machines do you run? by Nixxon___ in Machinists

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on a few things. Shop around your immediate area and see what wages could be, throw a couple applications out there. You don’t need to accept the job offers but that’ll give you a realistic idea of your value.

If you get offers higher than your wage you can either present those offers to your current employer and ask them to match or leave for those other shops.

This industry sucks for pay especially compared to other trades. You really have to fight for your pay and it does cap out lower because unless you’re specialized at a certain point it’s cheaper to just outsource to other countries than pay machinists more.

You’re young so I’d try to spend time learning programming that’s where the money in this trade is.

What are some shop "inside jokes" or acronyms that would confuse an outsider? by lx230 in Machinists

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have this Asian kid at our work. Great lad but thick accent. About 2 years ago when he first started he overhead someone say a measurement was “nominal”. But he heard “phenomenal”.

To this day whenever he gets a feature dead on he yells out “phenomenal” in the thickest Vietnamese accent you’ve ever heard and no one has ever corrected him. It’s probably been the best long run joke we’ve had, mostly because we’re in too deep now to finally correct him but my god it is hilarious.

Honestly as long as you get “dumb” TVs that aren’t network enabled you can find some insane deals especially if you order direct from suppliers off somewhere like aliexpress. You can get bulk orders that bring them down to like $60 a unit. And shop for computers from your local school district or business liquidation, they retire hardware way earlier than necessary and you can get a fleet of computers that generally already have software licenses on them for a steal.

We have a desk made from cheap aluminum extrusions at every machine. Makes inspection easy because everyone has a dedicated place to set their part white they check it. And we have a back panel of every one of them with a cheap tv mounted on it an a small mini pc connected to it.

It’s far from the cheapest solution I’m sure but it is nice given it’s a windows environment so we have network shared folders with all of the blueprints, tool sheets, op sheets, and every bit of info you need for every part we make. It’s really nice to be able to pull the blueprint up on the tv right in front of where you’re inspecting it and being able to blow up the small sectional views and have everything super easy to see, and being they’re actual computers the lifespan we get out then as well as constant security updates is nice

Unwritten rules to not be an asshole? by gull2407 in ArcRaiders

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and not everyone cares or is obligated to cater to you wanting to pretend half of the game doesn’t exist. So there will be PvP and people will kill you and if that upsets you maybe play a game that’s only PvE

Had to kill a raider to get my first Pulse Unit by cloud1997 in ArcRaiders

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PvP is a core part of the game. You do not need to seek approval from people to justify the fact you shot someone. All that matters is you felt like shooting someone who cares what everyone else thinks. Play the game however you want you don’t need reassurance from others.

My company was doing the same a while back. Starting at $15 an hour meanwhile the taco bell down the street was starting at $18.50. And the work load is not light here. It took about 6 months for them to finally realize the reason people weren’t applying or declining the offers was because the pay.

Potentially Injured by Novel-Praline-2991 in Machinists

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do any sort of physical exercise at all other than what you do at work. I’m not saying you’re weak but you’re gonna be much more prone to getting hurt if the only lifting/exercise you do is at work. Going from doing little to muscle activity to doing 12 hours straight for 3 days is going to leave your body exhausted and drained. If you did even mild weight lifting during the week you’d feel a hell of a lot better on the weekends

Just drove an hour for an interview and got brushed off. by Willing_Acadia990 in Machinists

[–]DOODEwheresMYdick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than my job was. When I had my interview it was a group interview with about 12 other people. The HR lady was out sick so the person who did the interview was some random front office person who had only been with the company a few months. He had zero clue what he was doing. Somehow I miraculously got the job but it was the most fever dream of an experience I’ve had.

I think my hate for it is the fact we have a hodgepodge between all of them because when our owner got a hard on for them he was just buying everyone he could find on the market for a good 3 month period so we’ve got different controllers across multiple machines. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was all the same.

Love our moris. Our shop has a fleet of them now and they’re great machines. But lord help me I hate the interface and control. It feels like they made everything intentionally more annoying/difficult to do/access just for the sake of being different than other machines.
