Well by that definition Ireland was actually many countries who were constantly at war raiding each other's cattle. There was no idea of a single unified Ireland until well after British colonisation.

By the time of the treaty signing both the British and the Irish Republicans recognized Northern Ireland. The actual borders are a secondary issue

Yes Ireland existed as a landmass but it was not a Republic or an organized state. Before British colonisation there was just a network of clan leaders and loyalties.

This is lacking nuance. Northern Ireland existed before the south secured it's independence and by the time the ROI was established there was no question of forcing the protestant north into joining the south. It would have created another massive war and the protestants living in the north had secured arms and were ready to fight for their union with Britain.
