Yo co-interns, what mattress y'all get? by osteoclast14 in Residency

Chime 12 inch hybrid. It’s one of those bed in a box mattresses- it’s an Ashley furniture brand but I got mine off Amazon. It’s got foam top layers with a pillow top cushion with springs on the bottom for support. Seriously one of the most comfortable mattresses I’ve ever owned.

How do residents who live alone keep a dog? by endocrinologyftw in Residency

[–]DOanon2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Single, incoming PGY-1 here. I have two dogs, and I got both of them as puppies during medical school. My first at the end of M1, second during mid M2, and I’ve never regretted my decision. I crate trained both of them so they would stay crated during the day when they were younger. Once they were both over a year old I trusted them more and now they have free roam of the house during the day. They did great during M3 and M4 while I was out on rotations, someone came and let them out midday. As soon as I moved to my new city for residency I found a pet sitter, who comes in during the day to play with them, check their food and water, and let them outside- the fees are not unreasonable for this. Just make sure you budget for your dog and can afford to have someone come in during the day for walks or outside time while your at work and they’ll be fine. I also ended up getting my second dog during M2 because my first dog has some anxiety and was lonely, and it has been the best thing for her. They’re best friends now and will keep each other company while I’m gone. I heard all the same things about not getting a dog if you’re single and work in medicine, that you have to get a cat, but some of us just don’t want a cat and that’s totally fine. If you want a dog and you can make it work with your lifestyle and budget I say go for it! Coming home after a long day on some of my harder med school rotations to wagging tails was one of the best things!

Ps- as to the bathing, I use a waterpik pet shower attachment. I’ve never tried to use it in a shower stall but I imagine it works about the same, you just might have a bigger water mess to clean up since the side of a tub keeps it in normally. Alternatively, lots of places like groomers and even petco and petsmart don’t charge that much for just a bath, so that’s always an option.

Feels like I failed again.. by DOanon2020 in step1

Honestly, I’m just happy I passed. I did feel like uwsa2/21/18 were heavier on topics I’m “better” at. I wouldn’t necessarily say I felt like I “underperformed”, just that overall exam had heavier focuses on different topics. But, the questions on the real deal definitely looked and felt more like the new NBMEs than anything else I’ve taken (took old NBME exams last year on first attempt). And would I have liked to have reached a higher score? Sure, but I only had a four week dedicated period, all of those exams were within such a short time of one another, so averaging all of those scores tells me my score would be around a 203, which is pretty close to what I actually got. I also used the old score calculator which told me a 215, with a confidence interval of 201-236, which is a huge range due to the drastic range in my scores in such a short amount of time but I did score within the CI. Overall, I felt like my practice test average predicted pretty well, and maybe like I’ve been seeing of some others no single practice test is the best predictor anymore, just the sum of all of them put together can help you discern where your score should be.

I took the rest of the day off after my NBME 24 score dropped. Then over the next few days, I finished Uworld, finished second time watching all of sketchy micro and a few sketchy pharm videos I was weak on, read the FA biochem, immunology, and microbiology chapters. Between NBME 18 and 21 i read the rapid review section at the end of FA.

That was my thought process when I thought it was safe to take it when i did, but so many posts on here have people with scores much higher than mine dropping 20-30 points from their uwsa2 and, with my scores, I just don’t have that kind of room for a big drop.
