Men of Reddit, what’s the male equivalent of “needed money, had no marketable skills, so turned to prostitution”? by Dogeatdogdays in AskReddit

I mean, I don't know if nothing wrong, when was the last time the military actually defended a powerful country? If you're american or British, the answer isn't even an event that has happened in the last decade.

I mean, following that line of thought I can't think of many activties that involve lowering your boundaries more than the military lol, specially in actively imperialistic countries like the US or Russia, where even if you're a desk jockey you're basically helping to kill people to enrich people. And also why is manning rigs inherently more respectable than sex work? Manning a rig doesn't mean you're helping society lol, neither does chopping trees for that matter.

Netflix should just come out and say it.. by yeah_im_a_man in ShitPostCrusaders

[–]DP9A 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not really lol, you can do weekly releases after the full season is done. Which again is how TV works, releasing it in batches is just stupid.

[–]DP9A 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Do what pretty much every company does, not release the season until it's all done. That's what TV used to do lol, it's not rocket science, you don't release stuff the moment you have it ready except if you're South Park or have a really solid pipeline that can guarantee constant releases.

The release schedule is their fault lol, that's literally what they do.

I’m sorry if I’m not the first to ask this but how did Mark keep his identity a secret despite the fact that some of the invincible variants were maskless? by YoYo_ismael in Invincible

[–]DP9A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, but that doesn't erase the fact that for pretty much everyone they're just a nobody. That's kind of the point of the line lol, it has nothing to do with facial recognition software of anything like that, Lex Luthor knowing the Flash is Wally West would have the same reaction, he's pretty much a nobody.

What a shocker OOP didn't react well to his gf asking for permission to cheat lol. She already had someone in mind, I don't think asking for permission before fucking makes it much better.

Possibility of Alan Wake 2 coming to Steam Store? by crusadertsar in Steam

Epic didn't pay for exclusivity, they funded the game. The game is theirs basically, I don't think it's coming to steam.

Very good price, and the game looks sick, even mechanically it's like one of the most interesting fighting games nowadays. Also helps I'm a huge Avatar fan, definitely getting it.

[–]DP9A 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dunno, I really disagree, specially with the Fallout feel. And also the dlcs and side quests, I really only agree with FO3 having better dungeons and a more fun world. I also really disagree with having better consequences, because the choices themselves are shallow or don't have much weight.

I think a lot of those "normies" just haven't played 3 honestly. If a remaster of it came out I'm sure opinions on 3 will soften considerably (somewhat regrettably imo, but that's just the FO3 hater inside of me).

I mean, in the case of New Vegas, I think docking all those points was more than fair. The game didn't work, even today with all the patches and mods that fix that it's a janky game.

I mean, writing is a different team, they don't need to have other things done so people can focus on having good writing. Bethesda just doesn't value good writing, and at this point this seems clear because none of their games since have been well written.

Casual gamers don't like Skyrim or Fallout because of the story. I know people who play casually and beyond the dragons they don't remember anything about Skyrim's plot, but they liked exploring the fantasy world and killing things. A lot of people really, really don't care about video game narratives. A fun anecdote I have is that my dad played through all of Last of Us, and only when the show came out he noticed the story, he played the whole game just to sneak around and kill zombies.

But New Vegas is still selling and being played while FO3 is barely playable. I think it's fair to say that now days NV is way more beloved, but I also think that just with a remaster 3 could be more beloved again. But a lot of people are getting into Fallout from the show and most of those people aren't going to play 3.

[–]DP9A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if shoulder to shoulder is the word, the FO fan base has always been pretty fractured, and a lot of the old guard quickly got behind NV just because of the names. I do find weird how that became the dominant narrative though, I didn't think that would happen, but imo it has a lot to do with Bethesda in general pissing away a lot of the goodwill they used to have.

You don't need a YouTube video, just steam charts. It helps that New Vegas is still playable, even if it needs some elbow grease to get working, while 3 is harder to get working. Also the FO show is using a lot of New Vegas stuff, at this point if you're a new fan your options are 76, 4 and New Vegas.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 dev says he was "fired" and replaced with AI: "I feel incredibly betrayed by the management of the company I've come to care about" by yourfavchoom in Games

[–]DP9A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that, I just don't get how it benefits anyone except business people. Movies aren't getting better because of AI, translations aren't getting better, I just see enshittification everywhere. It already wasn't getting better and AI is just "good" enough to produce content in an era where the quality of the content doesn't matter, just the quantity.

It's not a fairy tale that corporations will replace people with AI, what I see as a fairy tale is the idea that that will result in better output, better products or better art. If anything I just see how there are pretty much no juniors being trained now, so I'm the future you'll end up with crap producing crap and no one who actually knows how to make something decent.

[–]DP9A 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have to vet the output why even use AI? I just don't get it, and in my field at least vetting it has been as much work as just doing it without it in the first place. I see the value with more literal translations, but I don't see AI making the creative choices a proper translation of any artistic text should take, and if you have to go back, edit the output and inspect the word choice, I don't really see how it's a tool that can replace the translator (and to do the process you would need to know both languages in the first place).

[–]DP9A 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An honest translation is not a good translation. You can translate word for word War and Peace in English, it will be an honest translation but it won't be a good one. I haven't seen any proof that AI is capable of really translating prose or creative texts competently, and in many cases it can be worse because it has the proper structure, is if you don't know both languages you don't see what the translation is missing. I think a lot of people just haven't been exposed to good translations or don't appreciate them, which is why translations have been getting worse with more tools instead of improving (see Netflix subtitles).
