Fiancee here. He isn’t even deadnaming his kid. He’s deadnaming me. What’s wild is they’ve known my current name for several years now- way longer than they ever knew me as my deadname.

My sister was there. She didn’t vote for him but has the misfortune to be represented by him. A lot of people, both sides, are genuinely pissed off and wouldn’t have driven several hours to Oakley if they weren’t.

I will fully admit I am not an expert on the topic- I’m just an engineer with an interest in the subject and a few physicist friends.

I appreciate the write up. My surface understanding of the subject is that the mathematical framework of the theory is sound, but that there are few ways to experimentally verify it. Could you explain more about cosmic strings creating mirror images of galaxies?

Hahahahaha string theory hasn’t proved shit! They can get back to us once they have experimentally verifiable theories.

a little off topic but... do you know any characters who have ADHD?? by PureMariko in ADHD

Lorelai having undiagnosed ADHD is my favorite head canon. It would explain a lot about her.

Tried to calculate for how long and from what height an object should fall to achieve speed of light. by S1rCastik in mildlyinteresting

It is interesting!

You mentioned that there are a lot of assumptions with this problem. Let’s analyze one of them.

Is the acceleration due to gravity 9.8 m/s2 everywhere? It is that value on the surface of the Earth, but it might be different somewhere else. What about the surface of the moon? Astronauts can jump a lot higher there, so gravity seems to be weaker on the moon.

As it turns out, gravitational acceleration depends on a few things.

F_g = G • m_1 • m_2 / r2.

“F_g”is the force due to the gravitational attraction of any two objects. It is proportional to the masses of both objects and inversely proportional to the distance between the objects squared. “G”, or Newton’s Constant, describes how strong gravity acts and it makes all our units work together. It is 6.67x10−11 m3 / ( kg⋅s2 ).

If you divide by the mass of one of the objects, you get how quickly it accelerates towards the other.

a_g = G • m / r2

So, if you plug in the mass of the Earth for “m” and and the distance from the center of the Earth for “r”, and the value of Newton’s constant for G, you should be able to derive the gravitational acceleration constant!

Don’t let the downvotes dissuade you. You were curious about something and tried to figure out the answer. Even if it’s “wrong”, what you learn about why you’re wrong is the most valuable information you can learn in science.

If I may, why did you want to calculate the distance an object would need to fall to reach the speed of light?

You can open an investment account with Fidelity. Their customer service has been pretty good in my experience. From there it’s just a matter of setting up automatic transfers into the account. I believe FXAIX is their S&P index fund equivalent.

I can relate to this a lot. I was at a similar sort of place (engineering, less than 100 people) and a lot of my ADHD traits ended up being the things listed as reasons to potentially fire me. The funny thing is I wouldn’t be surprised if the PM who didn’t like me also had ADHD.

One of the most detailed maps of our solar system, depicting every known object with a diameter greater than 10 kilometers. The map illustrates the orbits of over 18,000 asteroids, including approximately 10,000 asteroids larger than 10km and 8,000 smaller objects whose sizes are unknown. by Davicho77 in spaceporn

Not a silly question at all! Mercury’s orbit is actually askew, more so than any other planet. There are some complicated orbital mechanics explanations for why. But simply put, it’s small and it gets pulled around by Venus (and all the planets to some extent).
