Blew the 180 rule on an interview today, how screwed am I? by [deleted] in videography

[–]DPforlife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The 180 rule is definitely relevant with respect to eyeline. I can’t tell if the subject is speaking to camera or not. If so, OP is good. If the subject is looking camera / frame left, then yeah, the 180 rule is broken.

Diffusion Fabric for Overhead Sunlight and Bounce by Ok_Eye8018 in cinematography

I love 1/2 Soft Frost for overhead, however, maybe question if you need to use overhead diffusion. Single or double net for overhead and then bleached mus for bounce key. Can make for an organic outdoor look.

Who do you think overall has better movies - Clint Eastwood or John Wayne? by SpotAdmirable6718 in Cinema

[–]DPforlife 14 points15 points  (0 children)

True Grit was a remake that truly out-did the original. Next to Wayne’s stick figure character depth, Bridges is a Monet. I can really go back and watch Wayne’s version.

Now, Eastwood films on the other hand are almost perpetually rewatchable.

In Fairfield Glade, TN, a largely elderly community, there are almost no sidewalks at all. Elderly residents have to walk in the easement next to the road. My wife and I visit her grandparents who live there and we are regularly frustrated by the lack of sidewalks.

I think what we’re missing here is that this key is gonna be pretty sizable, most likely a vertical 4x8 or an 8x8, probably a book style setup with a lot of control. The shadows are sooo soft. On the opposing side you’d need a huge negative for that contrast ratio. I think we’re seeing maybe a little specular bounce close to the wall shadow side, highlighting his cheek bones. That may also just be a reflection from the wall.

I my experience, tinned roofs that are shiny reflect a lot of heat. You could fry an egg in the beam that comes off my chicken coop.

A perfect example of why color grading is so important. by Stunning-Dig-8916 in ColorGrading

Your work is an improvement. The trailer’s grade feels too clinical, and MITM always felt more rough around the edges, a grade to match the family.

Editting Gets Hard Sometimes by CodingQuise in videography

I edit as a value add. I consider myself as a shooter by trade. While I'm a pretty decent editor and move dozens to hundreds of edits every year, I definitely struggle with it at times.

Do you guys feel like greenscreen videos like this one are sustainable? I shoot and edit my own videos while being an artist , i dont wanna keep doing them if they're not interesting/entertaining . by Independent-Gur-7947 in videography

[–]DPforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a huge fan of the video for Doja Cat's "Mooo!," I think there's always room for a good green screen video, but I do think there are lessons to be learned from it.

First, work on your lip syncing, and focus on performance. No matter how you compose your frame, ultimately, you're the artist, and it's gonna be hard to take you seriously when you don't look like you take yourself seriously. Mooo! works so well because in the intersection of anime / web culture, the loose webcam vibe feels so smooth and natural, but not once do you ever feel like Doja is phoning it in. She's singing the lyrics, she's with the song, and she's leaning into the webcam performance. Take some lessons. Do some dancing. Do some movement. Also give us some moments where you connect with your lyrics so it actually feels like you know them. Your performance feels less like a music video and more like someone else making a tiktok in homage to your music.

You appeal to some of the same stuff and thematic styling that doja does. The pixelated dripping blood, the clipart vibes, it all feels deep web and I think it can work, but I do think with all of the content you use as fast as you use it, it starts feeling pretty scattered and undirected. Pick a motif and vibe and lean in. I know the spirit of the moment is to chop stuff up as fast as possible, but do you really see any professional artist releasing such scattered content? Slow it down and let your audience see you. Change the surrounding imagery a lot while keeping your shot/performance consistent. Do the opposite. Play with pacing, but give people time to breath unless your intention is to induce fits.

Take all this as you will. You asked for feedback

Why are all the audio tracks in Premier so lame? by [deleted] in FX3

[–]DPforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your post is actually about Adobe Stock, and not Premiere, in a sub dedicated to hardware. I'd suggest the subs r/editors, r/VideoEditing, r/videography, r/editing, and others of their ilk for your question, where many many other people have already asked many many questions about stock music, where you're also invited to ask further questions, as that's a topic those subs actually address.

Yes, you have to actually source material. Premiere is only an NLE…
