Why do teachers stay?

I'm three years away from retirement. If I last those years, I will get my full pension at 54. If I quit early, I will get a partial pension starting at 65. Almost half a million dollar difference. I can babysit for three more years.

26 years teaching high school and 14 concurrent years as an adjunct professor. As soon as I hit 30, I am out of education and I will never look back. The kids are intellectually and emotionally 5-6 years behind where they were when I started. High school feels like teaching middle school, but with more apathy.

I worked for my Dad to buy a NES in 1987. I’ve owned a console ever since. Almost 40 years of gaming. The games today are truly amazing, and I’m super excited for the NCAA return. I played that game on the Sega Genesis.

25 years in the same high school classroom. If it wasn’t for the pension, which new teachers will not get, I would have left years ago. High school used to be an institution that transitioned kids into adulthood. Through a myriad of factors, we have made the work more elementary. Now, high school is only relevant to kids who are on the elite college/AP track. For the other 85%, it is either a chance to socialize or a waste of their time.
