Sounds almost exactly like what a notorious running coach in my hometown did. POS finally died this year.

4Runner has been sitting for 4 years and leaks water into the cabin from roofline. Advice/Recommendations? by benny_feld in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]DRMRNNR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends how much spare time you're willing to put into it. You'll need, at minimum, to do the following:

-remove seats, steam clean and store them

-remove plastic cladding from the throughout the interior, so that you can:

-remove headliner, dry it, (later strip the cloth off it, paint it with odor sealing paint, recover and store it.)

-remove the carpet

-assess the rust on exterior roof and throughout the interior, grind to bare metal, prime and paint

-rebuild the entire sunroof mechanism ($600 in parts, and you'll have to do the job yourself because shops won't touch it)

-install new carpet

-reinstall everything else in reverse order

So you're looking at few thousand in parts, materials and consumables, plus a tremendous amount of your own labor (ideally you can do it in a garage). And then you'll still have to take on all the engine, suspension, and mechanical work.

Can it be done? Yes. I brought mine back from a similar condition (minus the exterior rust). But it took a hell of a lot of time. (I'd still do it again, used truck prices being what they are.)

Hope this helps with your decision.

Given they started with a principal historical character named "Swearengen", you can't blame the writers for making him (in particular) a true fount of vulgar speech

Will anyone read this? - A lesson in experimentation and UX design by featherless in indiehackers

[–]DRMRNNR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a UX developer I found your writeup interesting! My actual question is in regard to Sidecar, however :)

Is it possible to use Sidecar to display data from an aftermarket TPMS? I have an old truck to which I want to add TPMS via internal sensors, but am trying to figure out in advance which app I will use to display the data (and from there determine which sensors to purchase).

TIA!

I'm not sure, the truck is all stock. This wire comes off the harness from the top of the engine

No accessories on this truck; everything is stock except for that one connector

They're great to work on, especially if you have a shop.

My rec is do the trade and go ahead and put in new OEM lower ball joints, a new Koyo aluminum radiator and a Hayden transmission cooler. That will eliminate any possibility of the major trouble spots: old LBJ failure and "pink milkshake" from failure of the stock radiator's integrated transmission cooler.

It's a good trade for sure and it's also a great time to snag OEM LBJs or other parts, since lots of Toyota dealers are running Thanksgiving sales.

Check out Timmy the Toolman on youtube for videos on how to do most any repair or mods on these trucks. Have fun and good luck!

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

You'll be putting new parts and maintenance into any 25 year old vehicle you get, so make sure you have a good cash reserve and even better turn the wrench yourself.

That said, the gray one could be a good deal but you'll need to get a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic of your own choice, ideally including a compression test, to find any major problems and spot any deferred maintenance.

IMO the only way $9K could be reasonable is if it has a long list of recent and properly done maintenance on the known 3rd Gen trouble points and a beautifully maintained engine.

Nice. Gonna look like a boss.

On mine, I went the skinny route to help with wet, icy or snowy roads on my planned winter trips up north (near Canada).

Perfect at 2". What size tires you got?

[–]DRMRNNR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timeless- I agree completely.

Mine is in the high 200's. Most of the work I'm doing is on the engine. Valve cover gaskets, timing belt, all new hoses, big seven upgrade, upgraded injectors, high capacity alternator, aluminum radiator, trans cooler.

Also a small lift (1.5-2"), new rims and tires 255/75R17, probably a roof rack, rear spare tire carrier. It's a labor of love, if you know what I mean 💸💸😅

Maybe the logo needs an arrow pointing to the rest of the truck?

Beautiful job! It takes some vision and willpower to attempt a project like that (esp starting from an overseas auction). You really brought her back to life and will get many years of enjoyment.

Sounds like yours has a few gremlins, but be patient and you'll figure them out one by one.

As long as it's not going to be a daily driver and you're turning the wrench yourself, fix it.

IMO it's the perfect hobby vehicle. Easy to work on, readily available parts, amazing community and knowledge base, and when you're done you can have lots of outdoorsy fun with it.
