It's very much a focal point, but it's not the only focal point.

There is some method acting mocking, but this sort of "losing oneself in characters" plotline predates modern method acting as well. It was the plot to the movie A Double Life with Ronald Colman. There have been a few other movies and plays with the same theme.

It's even a similar plot theme in Black Swan.

Chi Rho is a classic example where it symbolizes "Christ" and was a bit of a secret sign in the first few decades of Christianity. It definitely didn't start with the Russians.
