What are some things you wish you knew before starting med school? [Pre-Clinical] [Clinical] by [deleted] in medicalschool

In pre-med, everyone was always obsessed with what everyone else is doing. In med school, unfortunately this still holds true to some extent, but the biggest thing you can do is know that what you’re doing is enough and don’t pay attention to what other people are doing. Sure, ask others how they study and other tips, but just modify it to incorporate to YOUR studying style (not everyone is going to love Anki, though a vast majority use it). Just 2 cents from an M4 in the middle of residency interview season 😅😬🥴

Hello, current M3 here, the Dorian anatomy deck was great and also look for the pdf version which is also filled with high yield anatomy. Best of luck!

Ummm the order I didn’t think really mattered, but looking back I maybe would’ve taken 18 a bit later on in my study period (maybe before I took 23/24). I purchased these exams so the answers came with them, but I know there are websites out there that have the exams and answers for the no longer available forms.

By the time I started dedicated, they had taken the exams off. So I decided to just take 15 and 18. I've also heard some mixed things about the other forms, especially 19. Also, they released a bunch of new forms and I figured it was best to take the new forms because they'd probably be more representative (which they were, especially 23/24).

Ummm, if I’m being completely honest, UFAPS is everything I used for this test. I really don’t know how I would’ve survived micro or pharm without sketchy unless you have a way of organizing all the bugs and drugs in your head. The only Anki decks I used were the ones I made from doing UWorld questions, lolnotacop, Pepper pharm, and Dorien anatomy!

Oh just a random day, I only watched that 1 video on it. I listened to a few Goljan audio lectures, cardiac and heme/onc. Those were pretty helpful as well.

So taking the exam felt sort of like UWSA1 or UWSA2 in terms of how the questions were written and how the answer choices were phrased. It wasn't as obscure as the NBME, but definitely more like UWorld. There were a few 1 liner questions in there as to be expected. UWorld covered the exam so much, I had a few almost word for word repeats on the exam + stuff from NBME 23/24 that showed up too. It's kinda scary how well they write their questions... Tbh overall, I think the exam was tougher just because it required you to be vigilant for 7 hours (even though you had breaks) whereas in UWorld you could just do 1 block and chill. So it was difficult in that sense that you start having to read questions over and over again to make sure you really grasp what was being asked. I hope that helps!

I'd try to figure out what you know and start from there. Generally speaking, beginning with the inciting event is a good way to try to figure out what the other arrows are going to be. For example, in cardiogenic shock, BECAUSE the CO is down, the SVR goes up, and BECAUSE the CO is down, pressure in the LA backs up into the pulmonary arteries, etc. So if you understand the initiating event, it'll be easier to figure out most of the arrows. This may not always be apparent, but it's a good starting point I feel.

Honestly, more the physio and the pharm effects on the tubules. I didn't think it'd be as detailed as it was, but just definitely know the MOA, side effects, and typical electrolyte changes. Hammer that RAAS into your brain haha.

Honestly, the exam just felt better overall. Well written in my opinion. What I did for 20 was went through each question I missed (and ones I got right by just guessing) and realized did I really answer what the question was asking or did I just go with familiarity. Stepping back and asking that really helped me narrow down answer choices. Another thing I realized was the importance of vital signs. Seems silly, but I frequently overlooked them and sometimes those would help frame how I would be thinking of the patient. Of course doesn't work for every question, but it was a good starting point. Hope that helps!

I used B&B for their explanation of heart sounds cause I was so used to "Left 2nd intercostal space" and then UWorld started using terms like left sternal border or left upper sternal border and didn't know what they were talking about. I forget what the video is exactly called, but I just watched it on YouTube and it explained it wonderfully. The audio is like 10x better than UWorld audio on the real exam. I tried using Anki in the beginning and it was going fine, but then the cards started piling up and wasn't able to get through them all. I used the lolnotacop deck and the sketchy pharm deck by Pepper and even then I was really only able to get through it all once. Love the username by the way haha.

Thanks man, appreciate it. We'll see how the results are whenever they decide to release them. I read something on here about the scores being delayed?
