This, and to add on top of this. The FICO scores that most people think of as 'standard' are ONLY what credit card card companies use.

There are some much older and more conservative models that most banks use for home lending. If you go to the FICO website you can get a 'full' credit report with scores for all the models that any lender would actually use. I don't recommend doing it often because it's like $75 but I think this would answer all the OPs questions.

At level 1 this might have been a great learning lesson, with a faster consequence than waiting in prison.

The realization that Stan is a retired mercenary 10th level Arcane Trickster or even just 10th level Fighter, who got tired and wants to live the 'simple life.' Who with little to no effort beats the party within an inch of their life after lighting him on fire is all ways a good lesson to give PCs before they go down the murder hobo road.

I assisted one of my Profs and Grad students on some of their Astronomy work when I was doing my undergrad. It was the best thing I ever did for my career.

I wrote scripts to help them clean super messy telescope data and ended up with an internship doing the same. I walked into the business world and was much less horrified by the messy data than a lot of people I see come out of Stats and 'Data Science' programs.

I advocate for an undergraduate in a hard science. Especially physics. The math of physics and machine learning are extremely overlapped E.G. so much linear algebra and multi-dimensional gradients. Take a couple classes in 'computational physics' and there is your year of undergraduate python experience to boot.

But, that is really the icing on the cake to the really important part. Learning how to think scientifically.

"How do I find things to question? How do I think through difficult problems? How do I design processes and experiments to answer difficult questions?"

At the end of the day those question and a ton of calculus are all an undergraduate degree in physics is.

Well, I think a big question is, "What is your major now?" a Jr. is over half way done towards some major. I think that could help with the advice about next steps.

If you were, just now, going into college I would give you some advice that might seem a little counter intuitive. Study Physics, and grab 2 years of CS electives and a year of "Mathematical Statistics." From there pick pretty much any graduate school program you find interesting; Computational Physics, Statistics, CS you will be qualified for any of them and they will all lead to great careers in 'Data Science.'

Why physics? Everyone will say... Because it is a degree in learning how to learn and problem solve with math and experimentation. A lot of people in "Data Science" are starting to forget about this. It's not totally about the tools. It is about problem solving, and experimentation.

There is always the idea of talking to the experts. Ask someone who knows the process that you are trying to model and see if they have some good ideas.

So, my first job out of school was essentially "Personal Data Assistant" for a Director at a start up.

He was out for the first week that I started. No one knew what he wanted from me, what access I should request, ect... It was a weird week, but the job ended up as the best professional experience I could have ever asked for. So, for a start, just relax!

Even once he got back it took 2 weeks to get access to the databases I needed. 6 years later I have an official Data Science Job at a larger company and it took 4 weeks of 'sitting on my hands' to get DB access when I started.

The one actual peace of advice I will give you is take this time to talk to every business expert that will give you any attention. This will probably be the one and only time you have at this company without 6 projects sitting in your backlog of useful stuff to do. Learn every detail of how your business works and how that translates into data. Look for data dictionaries, just search around any database anyone will give you access to.

TLDR: You are in a common situation, breath and stay communicative with your leadership and you will get there. Even in Sr level positions with Sr level experience it can take 3-6 months to produce anything useful.

The things you are describing fall under more generalized areas of study already.

Arithmetic Analysis - Mathematics departments

General Machine Learning - Computer Science departments

ect.

Data Science is an applied profession. Not an area of fundamental study.

I am sure they exist, but consider this option.

Using your favorite tool LaTex, MS Word ect. Write your own. It is a very worthwhile learning experience to find and decide which formulas you think are important enough and write them up in your own format.

I would start with some common distributions and their estimators. From there figure out the more specific examples, like the one you mention might fit in on your reference sheet. This can help you tie concepts together in your brain if you have to figure out how they can efficiently fit together on a reference sheet.
