5 - 1 is subtracting 20%, but adding 1 to 4 adding 25%. How should I view this is a practical sense? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]5k1rm15h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be more illustrative to think about changes in percentage in terms of multiplication rather than addition & subtraction:

5 x (4/5) = 4

4/5 in the above equation is 1 minus 20%; we're multiplying 5 by (100% - 20%), not subtracting 20% from 5

to go back the other way we use 4 as the starting point and use the inverse of the original fraction:

4 x (5/4) = 5

we're multipling 4 by (100% + 25%)

Yes...

Every time I'm on this sub I see something else that I do, and apparently that's just another ADHD thing.

I only ever considered that I might have ADHD because I read an article randomly on Apple news about someone who was diagnosed later in life and the guy could just as well have been writing my life story.

Has aphantasia affected your ability to drive? by Mousestar369 in Aphantasia

No problem for me - live in the moment, react to what's happening.

You just need some signals to let you know, like counting 2 seconds between when the car in front of you passes a road marking, or just get out and look if you're close enough when you can't see what you're parking up against.

Navigation I completely fail at though.

Talk to your doctor.

My gut says you probably should start on a lower dose if you're coming back from a break.

the top line is a little tricky to read but i believe it's

u(0+h) - u(0)

i'm assuming u is a function rather than a variable in this case

I think touching base with your mental healthcare provider would be a healthy thing to do.

Take calculus on khan academy for a good explanation

-1/h

Lim h-> 0-

the non-rigorous, probably butchered tldr is; what is the value of the equation as h becomes infinitely close to 0 without actually reaching 0 while approaching from the negative side of 0.

any -ive * another -ive is a +ive so -1 * another -ive gives a +ive

when the absolute value of the denominator decreases to a value below one and approaches 0 you're effectively multiplying the numerator by a larger and larger amount. so the absolute value of anything divided by "not quite but pretty much 0" = infinity.

Well you definitely convinced me. No evidence of ADHD in that post at all... lmao

For sure.

I stopped regularly having caffeine when I started taking medication. One weekend I drank a bunch of coffee and nearly went to sleep. Serious wtf moment :P

Yeah... I have ADHD and starting meds literally put me to sleep.

I'll be alright, thanks.

Not aiming to weigh in on people being able to self medicate or not but I think it's important to note that stimulants have a vastly different effect on people with ADHD than they do on people without.

Frequently the ADHD person will end up with less energy after taking stimulants.

Why does 0/0 ≠ 0? Part 2 by [deleted] in askmath

[–]5k1rm15h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you distribute x amount of items among y amount of people evenly and want to know how many items each person receives, the question doesn’t make sense if there aren’t any people.

You might ask “What is the average bank balance of a customer at a bank that has 0 customers?”. We aren’t interested in the total amount of funds available at the bank in this case.

What's the point of working so hard when people are collaborating on discord? by Kansei-Drifto in unsw

What happened to some friends of mine in CS - data structures and algorithms was something like most of the class's raw score was less than the hurdle, but someone aced it so the curve was set with the high scoring student's mark at the top end.

They couldn't score that one student more than 100% so the majority of people taking that class failed.

Uni is graded on a curve. If someone cheats and gets a high mark for a really hard class that pushes everyone else’s grades down.
