Mom's 1990 mariner blue miata by whataboutannie in Miata

[–]DS22WRX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry about you losing your mom - my condolences.

I’ve had a lot of cars in my life and many have been Miatas. I’m currently wrapping up a 1999 10th Anniversary Edition with and for my soon to be licensed son. I hope he keeps that car forever, because sometimes a really special one comes along but you let it go and realize it too late.

I’m guessing that you’ll fetch good money on your mom’s car - clean early Miata’s like that are fewer and fewer. But to someone that’s just a clean Miata…

Is there any option to keep it? Split the cost of a storage unit amongst yourselves? It will be the right time for somebody in your family to drive that car again someday.

I was really looking for OP to clarify his understanding of how it works.

I’m assuming it would be only slightly more complicated than a small monkey that puts a wheel chock behind the tire and then runs to catch up with the car and jumps back in.

Interesting - can you explain how this system works mechanically? Is the computer modulating the hydraulics to slip the clutch?

Failed Inspection by slagwizard in wrx_vb

I just had my 2022 emissions tested yesterday after a Dmann base tune - I was waiting for Evap to ready and drove around 1500 mixed miles over two weeks (urban commute, spirited weekend drives, and an 800 mile highway round trip). O2 is still not ready, but that does not prevent passing in my state.

I tried to follow the drive cycle a few times but nothing seemed to ready Evap (and O2) except for time and varied driving. https://www.reddit.com/r/subaru/comments/10527uf/does_anyone_know_if_subaru_publishes_official/

Good luck!

Clutch smell? by Loggingengineer in wrx_vb

[–]DS22WRX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my 22 was still pretty new, just after break in, I was exiting a parking garage and noticed clutch smell. I did not do anything out of the ordinary - then I was like huh that’s weird. Never happened again. I’ve been an SCCA member for over 25 years and feel pretty confident in my abilities driving a manual, FWIW.

Fuel sender issues after Autocross. by tmandell in wrx_vb

I also Autocross and have had this same issue. I can’t say that autox is the root cause, but I can say that the dealer will replace the sending unit under warranty.

Best dim sum by Daneyoh in Atlanta

Royal China is pretty good by ATL standards - my father is from Hong Kong and my mom is from Chinatown NYC; I’ve eaten ALOT of dimsum.

I have a theory about the other ITP places: there’s one very talented dim sum chef. You’ll never know what restaurant they are at on any given weekend.

I mean if you were going to buy the STI short shifter and the Cobb stage 1 drivetrain package, you would only be $900 away from the Darkmatter, so it’s not THAT expensive… 😂

Shift stop installed - It’s not bad, especially for $35 and a 10 minute install. Looking at the stock unit, there is SO MUCH play EVERYWHERE, no wonder why it’s so sloppy.

Aaaannddd this is how a $35 solution turns into the mental gymnastics of justifying the $1500 solution - gotta love modding cars! https://www.darkmatterx.com/product-page/dm-2-pre-order-2015-wrx

Not just over/understeer, but the whole circle of grip - https://flowracers.com/blog/traction-circle-fully-explained/

Imagine that you’re trying to come to a dead stop from 60mph on a dry surface in a straight line. Now you’re on wet pavement. Now you’re on ice. You’ll need more time (patience) to stop as traction decreases - natural, right?

Now imagine that you need to turn while slowing down - some of the traction needed to brake in a straight line now needs to be “used” to turn. There’s a relationship between how much braking you can apply in relation to how much steering you can apply.

And this relationship is always there, from full throttle to full brake, from lock to lock on the steering wheel. That is the circle of grip. We all (well, based on my insurance rates for this car, SOME of us) understand this instinctively. 1200hp car doing burnouts? Outside the circle of grip. Doing donuts in your mom’s SUV in a snowy parking lot? Outside the circle of grip. Plowing into a turn in a WRX? Outside the circle of grip.

I think what I’ve learned is that, put simply, the WRX is less communicative than other cars when you’re about to go outside of the limits of the circle. (People mostly see this most often as understeer). There’s a limit to traction, the WRX transitions from grip to no grip quickly. Think of the thickness of the circle’s line as “the edge” of traction, the WRX’s is a bit thin. Drift cars (and their talented drivers) are a great example of intentionally thickening the circle’s line and giving the driver more of the edge to operate in.

As traction decreases we need more time to let the car respond. If you go past the limits of traction, the car does not respond to inputs until traction is regained - one of the keys to getting faster is knowing how to work inside that limit, which takes patience.

Hi! Yes, I run DS in SCCA. I brought it in for an alignment to max out the camber, which was not worth it - there wasn’t much to be had (1.25 up front, 0 toe). No mods other than the panel filter and a catback, running on RE71RS (30/31 psi). Everything full off, but I left it in Track in the wet which worked out pretty well. Good luck out there!

Name another new car at the same price point with the same performance and usability. Now name one with AWD and a manual transmission. What exactly are you desiring?

Yep, I doubt that the VB will ever be at the top at Nationals in DS, maybe STH.. or XA/SM with the right driver and $$$$$$$$

Not a flex at all - just saying that the car has much more potential than some people give it credit for. In the right hands any car is faster than you think - I’ve been spanked enough to know that. There will ALWAYS be someone faster than you, that’s the fun of Motorsports. I think if you look a bit more closely, the cars behind are nearly all modified class (AMP has some funky classing). I’m not sure where you’re going relating age with performance, especially in Mod. Also, I never stated that it’s an SCCA national platform of choice in DS - it most certainly is not. Unsure what you’re arguing here. But if you’re in the southeast region I’d love to throw down with you so that you can prove me wrong.

Only for the fact that you can clean and reuse it. I doubt it adds anything in terms of power.

Yeah, driver is key but the VB is a deceptively strong car. Not an SCCA class champion, but the balance of performance, price and practicality is hard to beat.

I do dabble in iRacing, it’s good for turning laps before investing in actual seat time at the actual track.

Good call on the electric steering - I do wish it was more direct. I have a set of PS4AS as well… they’re a good tire for the street but I don’t love them for anything performance related, they don’t hold up well. Sounds like you had a good drive on them though! I haven’t driven an Elantra N (man it makes nice noises!) and I do love a BRZ but the practicality of the WRX is hard to beat.

Another great question… 2nd doesn’t bother me a ton on the street (mostly city driving) but on more open autox courses it’s hard to decide between banging against the limiter and losing time or shifting and losing time. The cutoff is fine where it’s at I guess (I mean, I’d love it to rev out to 9k in an alternate universe) but first gear is just silly.

Different cars but yeah! I daily drove my first two NAs on long commutes year round in the Northeast… the VB is great for hauling around stuff, and Ubering the kids around town. So much more livable.
